Can this turn SNOW into ICE? - Skating Trail (Episode 2)

- Day 2 of building our ice trail. We tested out this soil compactor and had some pretty good results. Now that the base is ready it's time to start flooding. It's much faster to make ice when it's cold, so in the next episode we're going to stay up all night making the trail.

You should look into expanding hose, you can keep like 300 feet in a 5 gallon bucket, when you're done using it, it forces the water out of it as soon as you remove it from the tap and shrinks right back up...works great!

I'd say snowshoeing down the deep snow, followed by the compactor and then the resurfacer and it should be killer. A few years ago I did this on a small scale, first with snowshoes, the by dragging a white water canoe and finally the ice resurfacer.

Any reason you guys didn't use the water tank on the tamper plate? They are usually connected to a drip bar that goes across the front of the plate. I wonder if that would've helped the sticking and also the compaction.
It was pretty cold and I didn’t want it to freeze up. I was curious though. It’s designed to be used in the summer and I wasn’t sure if it would work well in -20
@@CoachJeremy I think with the vibrations of the plate it wouldn't freeze, but I definitely wouldn't leave the water sitting in there. I would say it's worth taking a chance and trying it.

Couple years late, but when you empty a line, turn all your ball valves 45 degrees (or remove em entirely). Otherwise, they'll trap a little bit of water behind the ball itself which will freeze and blow up the valve body.

u need to some how heat the bottom of the compactor up so the snow doesnt stick, the sheet of metal was getting the temp of the snow. very cool idea
I’m sure it’s been said already but try ski/snowboard wax on the compactor to keep the snow from sticking.
What about a heavy duty roll of plastic on the trail compact it with snow then zambomi it. Might keep the water from seeping into the ground.

That compactor/tamper has a water tank built on the front of it, and sprays out !!! For future reference

snow blow down to like 3 inches then compact it with the bored from the side of the rink with weights

Ugh. You know, if you bothered to read the wd-40 bottle, you'd see that it specifically states that it is NOT a lubricant - it's a water displace, rust dissolve, etc., but NOT a long-term lubricant (although they do have one-off varieties that ARE lubricants.)
