Hello Robert, Thanks for sharing so many technical video, learning a lot out of your video series, keep sharing , thanks again for your efforts and dedication.
Hi Robert, thanks for sharing very useful information.... Hope we will have more information on the spice models generation.... Thanks for all your efforts
71mcostant Hi71mcostant, you are absolutely correct. Thanks for point it out. When Vd is much greater the N*VT, it then simplifies to the equation I used. Thank you very much. Tonight I will record how to extract the AC parameters.
this is a wonderful dataheet model video... shockley was very smart, however others were close to the same idea.. the white diode?...:/ gee, only a few r&d labs back then... thanks...:)
If you don't have a Vf vs If, then I would use a curve tracer or plot manually by connecting a current limited power supply and creat the plots yourself. You then see what the slop of the Vf/if and this will give the dynamic resistance of the zener by putting a series resistor to simulate the dynamic resistance. So you can connect a voltage source (Vz)+ ideal diode (set N=0.001)+ resistor (dynamic resistance) all in series. Hope that helps.
Hello Robert does the SPICE model take into account packaging parasitics? Or another way to put it do datasheets consider the packaging parasitics at microwave frequencies or making measurements is the only way to get an accurate model?
Hi Ramazani, no most spice models do not take into account the parasitic lead inductance in the case of a leaded diode. So the rule of thumb that I use with 20 nH per inch. So if you know how long you lead or wire is, you can quickly estimate the inductance and add a series inductance. In the case of capacitance, some do, but it is probably good to measure the parasitic capacitance with a VNA or a FRA, I hope this makes sense
This modeling technique is for a first-order model, which means that it is a very simple model. In most cases, this should be good enough to get very useful data from your simulation.
Hi robert, there were several other parameters apart from Rs, N and IS expected by a Level 1 SPICE diode model. Then why only Rs, N and IS are focused. In general, how to know the minimum number of parameters needed for an acceptable modeling of a component. Also, how to model series inductance and body capacitance of the diode, as body diode plays important role in ringing
Hi Vakacharla, the show how to model the DC characteristic of a diode which is the most important parameter. To model the capacitor of a diode, you need to model Cjo, grading factor and I think, Vj. Microcap12 has a modelling feature where you can use it to model both the DC and capacitance of the diode. Download microcap 12, it is now free.
efox29 Hi efox29, I did play with the initial guess. If the initial guess is way off it will not converge. But after seeing many diode models parameter, you get a feel of the range. But the range is wide thou. Thanks for the question. RB
You can also download the full version of Microcap 12 which has the diode model maker. You type in the Id vs vd and it will extra a model for you. You can also model other devices. I will be making a video on that soon as I get some time.

Hi Rahul. Feedback like your give encouragement to continue making videos! I appreciate your comments. Thank you for your comments! Robert Bolanos
hi robert i am an electronic hobbyist ... thanks for your informative video ... god bless
Hi Robert, thanks for sharing very useful information.... Hope we will have more information on the spice models generation....
Thanks for all your efforts
Thank you Hari! RB
Thank you so much for the great video, but how did you get the value for Vd'? Why it is 0.48V?
Hii Robert, I'm just your new subscriber.
Thanks for subbing!
Very informative. Thanks for the video
Glad it was helpful!
It might be irrelevant but the general diode equation is actually Id =Is (exp(Vd/N Vt) -1)

@@RobertBolanos Thank you for the video, it is very interesting.
@@RobertBolanos Thanks you for this great video. really looking forward for the ac parameters video.
Thanks, much appreciated.

How does one create a model for a Zener diode that does not have the Vf vs If graph?
If you don't have a Vf vs If, then I would use a curve tracer or plot manually by connecting a current limited power supply and creat the plots yourself. Hello Robert. Would you be able do post a video with all this process for zener diodes?
Yes I think I can do a video on how to model a zener

How to do a least square fitting with more data points than unknowns? The diode model is nonlinear, so I don't know how to do least square fitting.

mathematica will do this quite well.

What is the effect if the initial values are near or far from the actual values ? Would the result of minerr still produce the same output ?

Hi Robert, please is there a way you can help me model a varactor diode "MACOM MAVR-011020-1411" with a reverse bias voltage . thanks
I think there is a way of modelling the reverse voltage capacitor effects. Please send a copy of the datasheet to rbola35618@aol.com
Minerr function won’t output a value, any help?
How did you do Minerr without a solve block?
Be sure you type on top the Given statement for the function to work.
You can also download the full version of Microcap 12 which has the diode model maker. You type in the Id vs vd and it will extra a model for you. You can also model other devices. I will be making a video on that soon as I get some time.
I figured it out, the bolded equal signs are boolean. Ended having to use the solve block but was able to get an output. Thank you!
Hi Sir. Can I have some of simulation file for flyback and forward. I sent you an email. Thanks😊
