The Stranglers - Waltz In Black

  • I'm bored so I though I'd give an old midi file of Waltz In Black an update and put it through a modern synth (Yamaha MX61 in this instance). The voices used on this one are the "Hanging Around" organ, "Toiler" keyboard (with tremolo) playing the melody, "Thrown Away" playing the bass and defaults of piano and choir filling in the rest.
Sorry about the shakey camera - I've not had a pint since the pubs closed!!!! Not the greatest quality of sound either (the longer this quarantine goes on the more I might actually learn about creating videos - then again perhaps not).
Until then, I hope you enjoy and stay safe. Hopefully will see fellow people-in-black in Rock City in November!
PS - I don't know why it was done in 4/4 time - I didn't create the original!!!

I can’t read music but the first few chords are made up of
    A,C,E
    A,C,F
    Bb, D, F
    Back to A,C,E
Thanks to your video 👍🏼👍🏼🎹 will work on the rest of the progression after I learn to play this!

I have done a cover of this song with this chord progression: Am F Bb Am (repeat 3 times), C Bb, Dm E - Am

any chance you can link or upload the midi file? i just spent hours trying to play this on my old string synth and im ready to cut off my fingers in a tantrum. its more difficult than it sounds. i started playing it on deepmind 6 and soon ran out of keys.

Love this. Stranglers fan since the 80’s! First band I was ever into. I am only now just learning to play Piano and I have had this tune in my head nearly every day. I know the first few chords from this video. But the rest is confusing me. Would love to learn the rest to play this !! Man in black or Jon Hobley would you know where I can source sheet music? 😃

Hi Mel, thanks for watching and commenting. I can't help with sheet music, but you can get the midi file from freemidi.org/download3-19420-waltz-in-black--the-stranglers and run it through one of the online conversion tools to convert it to musical score.

You don't need sheet music to learn this. It's less complicated than it sounds, and I can point you in the right direction.

I recently got my hands on a Korg MicroX, and it seems to have dozens of sounds that could've got the 'Greenfield seal' of approval. I'm always willing to tweak them. Have you used this species of analogue?

Fab!!! Any chance of doing the same for No More Heroes? I would love to 'try' to learn how to play it before I'm too old.

I've found a couple of midi tracks for Heroes but the problem is when you try to do guitar tracks through midi or on a keyboard, they are worse than listening to a casio home organ!
If you just want the keyboard parts, I'll see what I can do. Might take a while though......!
