  • The Tascam can actually record (and playback) on three channels. I did not show off the third channel in this movie but both machines did work the last time I tried them. There is no third channel mike, but there are line inputs (and outputs) on the backs of the units.

    There are 15 to 20 screws, and 9 or 10 wiring harnesses that need to come off to get to the area with the belts. While you are in there, replace them all. You can order belt kits on-line. I am sure that there are qualified technicians near you to: clean the heads (with alcohol), demagnetize the heads (heads naturally become magnetized through standard use, but this will actually erase the high end from your tapes while they play), See next post for more:

    I remember using this deck along with a DBX noise lowering unit. As you can see you from the video at 4:03 the deck has only dbx encode and decode connections on the main Left and Right channel.The cue channel is missing this. making it a good one to use it along with a slideshow computer system like multiple kodak slideprojectors controlled by a computer system named Clearlight.It was mid 80's I think when I first was able to use this nice machine.

    3 channel recording? That would be useful in an industrial setting to monitor the power quality/power factor of a large building and keep it analog. Each phase would get its own channel. I have been doing digital recordings of a single phase 120 volt socket using a 1 million ohm resistor on each prong.

    Clean the capstan and pinch roller (never with alcohol that will dry out the rubber, use a rubber restorer.) I sold the bottom unit from the video (had the rack stand brackets) to a gentleman that used to work for the CBC. He knows that they are high quality workhorses. I think I got $ 231.

    Good demo thanks!
    Would really like to see the third track recording, I can't get a signal into the CUE track on mine currently.
    It has the mono line input on the back, so I'm wondering will it be L or R?

    • @KKnockk
      @KKnockk  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A stereo cassette is really a 4 track tape. Left + Right in one direction; and L Left + Right in the other direction. Using the CUE track on this machine will instantly make the tape usable in only one direction. (It claims one of the tracks that was previously used for L or R in the other direction/flip side of the tape.) If you lay down “start and stop” CUE info, or any other type of signal it will only get that info from the inputs on the back of the machine.
      You can however utilize this third “CUE” track to add in extra instruments or vocals. You can’t really categorize it as a Left or Right channel. If you then hook this deck up to something that has discrete inputs, say a quad receiver, or a 5.1 surround receiver, then the channel will be whatever you hook it up to. (Left Rear, Right Rear, Centre…)
      Remember the tape is no longer able to be flipped, and if you do turn it over to play it, the information will play backwards.

      @powerinformation 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool thanks a lot for the reply. so the CUE must be plugged into an output itself, ah I just got it, I'm having trouble recording anything currently however. the mic inputs on the front worked once but now I cannot replicate this. My machine also is slow to release the tape after hitting the stop button (which stops me opening the eject door) and seems to unwind tapes a fair bit....i guess it needs a service.

    will this and a old school tascam mixer compare to a 244 portastudio or is the portastudio just better?
    the 244 has been very mystified and i’m not even sure what’s so good about it, is it the pre amps, the recording quality? can someone enlighten me on this?

    • @KKnockk
      @KKnockk  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The THD of both machines is identical, and the Wow and Flutter is within 0.005%
      The frequency response of the Tascam 133 is 30 Hz to 15 kHz
      The frequency response of the 244 Portastudio is 40 Hz to 14 kHz
      So both the low end and the high end is better on the 133

    Is it possible to just run audio signal through? For some kind of vintage coloration of the sound?

    • @KKnockk
      @KKnockk  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Recording onto and then listening back to most tapes (DAT excluded) usually results in some degradation.
      I have never heard of it being referred to as "vintage coloration"
      The frequency response of the 133 is 30Hz to 15kHz., so depending on the quality of your source, some of your high end might be lost. (And you would only be able to detect that if your ears can still hear in that frequency range)

    What is the chanel "CUE" and the indicate "CUE"?

    • @KKnockk
      @KKnockk  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sold these units almost a decade ago, but as I remember it:
      What we call a stereo cassette tape is actually a four-track tape.
      Two tracks in one direction, and then when you flip the tape over, two tracks in the other.
      This cassette deck will allow you to use three of the tacks at once. L+R+ a third CUE channel.
      This third track can contain any information that you want, including spoken words to give a sound engineer extra instructions. Or even instructions for a lighting technician.
      This third channel can also be used for audio recording and playback. Imagine adding an extra instrument after the initial recording is made. Or having the original singer be his own backup voice.
      But, once this channel is employed, the cassette that you have used this on, becomes playable in only one direction. If you do turn the tape over and try to play it, the information that is recorded on this CUE channel will play backwards through one of the standard channels.
      Just like if you put a store-bought pre-recorded tape in this machine and listen to all three channels, you will hear the left and right channels correctly, as well, one of the two stereo tracks from what we normally call the “B” side. And it will be playing backwards.

      The CUE track is used for data recording instead of audio such as to trigger other TEAC cassette decks or to trigger other equipment.

      You might want to get TASCAM 134 over 133 due to the slight more possibility of an additional track 4 over 3 so that you can have another microphone track. 133 only allow one microphone one source and one cue.

    Hi. I have this unit. I attached a video link and wondered if yours does the same?? The rewind keeps spinning (left wheel) even when tapes rewound. Doesn't have issues with the counter set to 0 . Is this normal?

      It has been many years since I owned these machines, so I will try to talk you through it as best as I can from memory.
      First: Please use a tripod to hold your camera.
      The jerky motion and constant fading in and out of focus makes deciphering your problem more problematic.
      I cannot really see what part of the left spindle is still turning when the tape is not.
      Is it just the very center, along with the retainer clip, that keeps going, or does the outer toothed shell of the spindle keep spinning as well? (And it is just not making full contact with the teeth of the tape)
      Something to try:
      Remove the outer cassette door shell.
      Remove the tape.
      Close the door.
      Inspect where the sensors are that tell the machine that there it is loaded with a tape.
      Gently press on these sensors, and press rewind.
      You will only get a couple of seconds of action because, since the right had wheel is not moving during rewind, the motion sensor is telling the machine that it has come to the end of the tape, and it will shut off.
      So, when it is rewinding, gently hold the left-hand spindle and see how much tension it takes to stop it from spinning.
      If only a minor amount of pressure keeps the outer geared ring of the spindle stopped, and the inner spindle continues to turn, then it is the clutch mechanism on this spindle that is at fault.

      @@KKnockk Thanks for reply. Yeah my camera work is aweful.
      Basically, I took off the cassette door face. When I shut the door, hit rewind the spindle spins away indefinitely. I can apply pressure to it and there is plenty of grip , I have to press firmly to stop it. When I have a cassette in it the spindle is spinning freely but surprisingly doesn't engage the tape cog. The right hand one stops normally but left just keeps going. I didn't know about the sensor and I will have a look at that. I know when I FF it when empty it stops after a couple of seconds. The REW should do the same?

    • @rcary
      @rcary ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KKnockk I also didn't mention that I had pulled the cassette unit out of the case when I changed the belt. That was quite a challenge. I'm wondering when putting back together I did something to interfere with the REW operation .

      Here's a better video. I think that sensor is jammed behind the faceplate. I remember I forgot to put it on and rushed it back in from the front.

      @@KKnockk Yeah, the center spins and the teeth are engaged on the cassette cog. Funny though when no cassette is in it and I put pressure on it, it doesn't slip at all, lots of torque. Is that a fix for intermediate skills?
