i am currently living on the eastern coast of japan, 500 meters from the sea. I have seen these structures nearby shown in 10:58 called coastal dikes but i never knew these were man-made. I often go for run along the sea embankments and i used to think of these dikes as natural geological structures. Thanks for the informative video now i know what these are and what its purpose is.

I am comfortable and confident of living in Japan irrespective of so many natural disasters, coz I know Japan government will never let same mistake happen again. Such a wonderful administration! Good free public schools, hospitals and 100% safe society for my kid. My kid of 9 years old can travel by her own all over Tokyo in crowded public trains without me being worried. I don’t think any *democratic* country in this world can offer this!

I am a researcher in Earthquake Engineering hence just wanted to point out. Earthquake proof buildings mean these buildings donot sustain any damage whatsoever (which is practically incorrect and vague) instead earthquake resistant buildings mean it might undergo damage but won't collapse (the severity of damage is less). I hope I am able to differentiate both the terms.
