    I'm still not convinced that the tunnel is a good idea, but the technology to make it is fascinating. Thanks to the WSDOT for sharing this unique view. For all our sakes I wish you safe boring ahead!

    Very cool, everyone should view this marvel of engineering at work! Idencia is proud to provide information tracking for each concrete panel in the installed rings.

    I helped make the pieces of the tunnel. called segments. made in frederickson WA and taken to Seattle.

    It is kind of a shame that such a large beautiful underground space has to be partitioned into separate sections. I obviously understand why, however it looks so amazing in its first state.
    Great video! It is amazing to see the entire project in one take as it is usually out of context snippets.

    The tunnel is within 5 miles of an airport - did you get approval prior to flying? #Kidding

    Nice, i manage crews who use these machines to dig tunnels all around the world, but i never saw it from that perspective before, i might try it, nice work and super Tbm, wow that's a beauty.

      They are for constructing tunnels, segmentally lined tunnels for trains, water, sewage, automobiles etc.

    Definitely really cool! The captions were also excellent. Thank you. Also not sure if possible but it'd be even better in the future if the drone camera can pivot up/down and/or left/right without having to navigate the drone for other views.

    Great video WSDOT! When the drone is at the future southbound roadway (about 35 seconds into the video) why are the lights on the walls horizontal on the right side and vertical on the left side?

    It looks a lot narrower than the existing Alaskan Way thoroughfare. In fact, there is a whole lane missing. Where will all the traffic be diverted when the tunnel is completed? Or will Seattle commuters just have to get used to nightmarish traffic jams?

    • @wsdot
      @wsdot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +SeafairZombies It will be 2 lanes in each direction, plus an 8-foot shoulder. 60-65% of viaduct traffic uses it to bypass downtown, and the tunnel is designed to handle that traffic. There will also be a new Alaskan Way that will work in conjunction with the new tunnel that will have several routes into and out of downtown for people who need to access the city. There will also be exits into downtown at each end of the tunnel. Essentially it's spreading traffic out.

    • @virginiagacek4115
      @virginiagacek4115 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      michaelwest720 it's the SR 99 tunnel running. North and south. It's a freeway.

    • @wsdot
      @wsdot  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tunnel is replacing the current Alaskan Way Viaduct, which isn't built to withstand a major earthquake.

  • @PScottCummins
    @PScottCummins 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Just a question WSDOT, and I know this would "never happen" but what are your plans for simultaneously bringing crews in for fighting a fire AND evacuating the tunnel. Because an old RV would never rear-end a '73 Pinto causing massive fire and smoke at 4:20 on a Friday when everybody in a huge hurry to get home. That would "never" happen.

    • @wsdot
      @wsdot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      +PScott Cummins Once a fire is detective, the fire control system will deluge the fire zone with water. The ventilation system will automatically start extracting smoke from the area of the fire and resh air will be pushed in through the portals. The Seattle FD is notified of all fires and will respond, using the tunnel roadway - there is an 8-foot shoulder in which they can get through. In the rare circumstance where an evacuation is necessary, motorists will evacuate through the egress corridor, which is separated from the tunnel and is protected with fire walls and has a separate ventiliation system.

    Will trucks with hazmat be able to use the tunnel? What's the toll rate for 5 axle rigs? Same as the TNB?

    • @wsdot
      @wsdot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Scott Ruff Then tunnel will have clearances high enough to accommodate the majority of freight trips, although vehicles containing flammable materials will be prohibited, the same as it currently is with the Battery St. Tunnel, so it shouldn't be a major change for those type of vehicles. Toll rates will be set by the Washington State Transportation Commission and will likely be announced closer to the opening of the tunnel.

    The majority of consumer drones have no provision to record sound while shooting video. If they did, all you'd hear would be the drone's motors whining and a lot of propeller noise.

    Wait, is this single or two lanes? Looks really cramped for two lanes.

    • @wsdot
      @wsdot  8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Saff Michael It'll be 2 lanes in each direction plus an 8-foot shoulder and a 2-foot shoulder.

    Whats the diameter of the cutting head and how many feet per day?

    • @wsdot
      @wsdot  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Chris Lepper It's 57 1/2 feet. There's no particular set feet per day it digs, it depends on the soil it's going through and any needed maintenance. You can track progress here: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects/Viaduct/About/FollowBertha

    WoW! One less lane, no downtown exit and an arm and a leg just to drive through it. And the next video is called,
    "Protecting the Alaskan Way viaduct". Ha ha. If that were really happening, this tunnel straight to Amazon County would never
    be happening.

    Pointless to shoot with a multi-rotor in such a confined space.

    • @WasterMercy
      @WasterMercy 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Aji nomoto so confined space? Bertha has a diameter of 52 feet (16m) , assuming that each floor of a given building is 2,5 m; that tunnel is as tall as a five/six floor building. For sure that is not a confined space.

    • @Orangmaniac
      @Orangmaniac 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The multirotor is 30 feet in the air. That seems pretty reasonable to me.
