I like the shelter. Sturdy but easy to make. Question: How far does the fire have to be away from the shelter opening to prevent fire but provide enough heat?

you have to judge for yourself. How big should the fire be, how dry is your roofing material, flying sparks, etc. My fire in this video was purely intended for my psyche. In order for it to warm me, it would have had to be closer.

I would have put the entrance on the other end so it has protection from wind, rain, snow. And heat from a fire will radiate somewhat from the hill.
You're absolutely right. In a survival situation I would do it that way!
But it was only for one night, without strong wind AND for a TH-cam video. Nobody would not care if they don't see me 🙈
