  • Second video in a series on repairing my low side Hyde Drift Boat.

Here is the second video of repairs and on going work on this Hyde drift boat. In this video I show how I cleaned up the edges of the bottom and then prepped the bottom for receiving the Fairing application. I used Totalboats Total Fair to filling any holes, scratches or missing chunks on the bottom of the boat. I explain how the Total Fair mixes and demonstrate a couple of methods of application. I am not a professional nor am I experienced in boat repair. This is simply my process and recording the project as it unfolds.
Once the fairing is done and the bottom is ready I then will apply a thin layer of epoxy to the bottom, and then two layers of fiberglass and epoxy and finally one last layer of epoxy to smooth out the bottom some. Those steps will be in the third video, coming out soon.

I would like to thank (and suggest) Totalboat (www.totalboat....) for all their help with this project and recommend their products to anyone with a similar need.
I would also like to thank Andy Miller with Boatworks Today (www.boatworkst...) for his time and help in getting some direction for this project. He has some wonderful videos on restoration and repair of various boats. Well worth checking out!

Whoever did that repair that you removed needs a little guidance in fiberglass repair work aye?

It would seem at first glance. But, the repair was done over 15 years before I started working on it and the boat was used by a professional guide all that time so it really was somewhat beat up. Plus, Epoxy does not like heat and over time the epoxy starts to delaminate (I learned this through the process of working on this boat). It was just time to give it some TLC. - Ian Anderson

I need to reinforce/repair the bottom of an old (1975) fiberglass driftboat. Significant parts of the bottom are stress cracked and a crack almost all the way through from where the previous owners had some kind of foot block to apply pressure while rowing. This is a great series of videos because I too could find little information on how to "reglass" an old boat. Looks like I wont be fishing for a while.
When is #3 video coming out? Thanks for posting these.

Thank you for your inquiry. Unfortunately, I have not gotten to the boat, and the videos, this summer like a I planned. I am working on the third video and am planning on resuming work on the boat this week but I am anticipating life getting in the way of that. Many drift boats do have a foot rest/brace for applying more leverage while rowing. I would reach out to Total Boat or Andy at Boatworks today to see what they advise. You also might reach out to Hyde drift boats or Stealthcraft up in Michigan and see what they advise. - Ian Anderson

I was just thinking about that last week. I have the footage but haven't put it together yet. Give me a couple weeks. Then in March(ish) I can get back to work on it. Thanks for asking! - Ian Anderson

What fiberglass and epoxy did you end up getting? I have a 20 year old Hyde that needs almost as much love as the boat you have. I am looking forward to the next video!

Thank you for your inquiry. I apologize that it has been so long to get the next video out as well as get this boat done. The Epoxy I am using is TotalBoats High performance epoxy ( www.totalboat.com/products/clear-high-performance-21-epoxy-kits ). The fiberglass is a rolled/woven fiberglass from Totalboat as well ( www.jamestowndistributors.com/product/product-detail/2070 ). I like their products and they have excellent support. They have been a tremendous help in this project.
I am working on the next video this week and should be getting back to the boat in the next ten days (or so). I have some interesting information on how I would have done things different that will be in those videos. If, however, you are starting your project soon, email me ( ian[at]dressedirons[dot]com ) and I will share that info with you. After talking with the previous owner, who had his own boatworks company, I definitely would have done things different. That said, what I have is workable and I will proceed. - Ian Anderson

Any update video coming out soon? Curious to see if you used gelcoat or a different product for the final finish on the bottom. Thanks!

Yes, I am working on the next video this week and have started working on the boat again (now that it is warmer) and hope to have the bottom complete in a couple of weeks. Thanks for asking, - Ian Anderson

Great video! Working on refinishing my RO Classic Skiff drift boat. Doesn't need a full overhaul like the boat in the video, but it's great to hear the details!

Brenden, thanks for the comment and the compliment. It has been an interesting project. The one major change that I would do when I have to work on the boat in the future is to have the boat indoors!! Having it outside means you have to work around the weather. Should have the next video out soon. - Ian Anderson
