  • Today I'm raking hay with the Farmall F20 tractor and New Holland 258 rake. Then it's time to bale with the Farmall 856 tractor and the Gehl 1860 round baler. And finally, remove bales from the field with the Farmall 504 tractor.

Hi everyone, I will be at the Half Century of Progress show in Rantoul, Illinois on August 24, 25, and 26. We do not have a booth, but I plan on having some meetups there for a few hours each day. I won't know where to have the meetups until I get there and find a good place for them, so I will post times and locations after I get there. Sunday's video will have more information.

You get used to it, especially those older engines. Once you get into the grind of regular maintenance you get very intimate with your equipment. I can still identify every component of my 800cc suzuki, I could feel it when the distributor was off and needed adjusting/cleaning. How much choke it liked and how easy it was to kill it if the engine wasn't properly warmed up yet. It basically needed attention twice a year to keep running in optimal condition.
Anyway, I sold that car over 15 years ago, but driving hasn't been as much fun as with that car.

What a treat to see that ol' F20 get put to work. I really do love the old stuff. Their simplicity, and the key was to learn to tune it by ear. They'll sing to you when it's JUST right. That 856 was a good snag on your part. Have a fine weekend, Pete.

Pete glad to see the big old F20 at work. Just proving that you don't need brand spanking new Case ih or what ever to do your work. And so what if the F20 takes a few minutes to start. Compared to the 856, but the F20 needed something to do before it probably went crazy listening to all the other tractors gossip.

Pete, My Grandpa always wore overalls & tee shirts most days...he always carried a pocket knife, handkerchief, lighter and a cigar in the top front pocket...he always had a pair of needle nose pliers in back left pocket with a narrow flat head screw driver...those tools tore apart the tractor cushions regardless...he and my Uncle Bob took the seat off and replaced it with a lockable swivel seat...that was their winter garage
    project

I spent many a day driving the red Farmall raking hay in central Kentucky in the 1980s. It wasn't quite as old as that one but it wasn't new either. We used a square baler and had to load the bales onto wagons and put it up in the barns. Being a bit allergic to hay it was long sleeve shirt time and in that Kentucky humidity it was HOT. We usually had 60 to 80 head of cattle and would cull the herd in the Fall so we didn't have so many to feed over the Winter. We also grew 3 to 5 acres of tobacco every year depending on our government allotment. Tobacco is an extremely labor intensive crop to grow so thank God for the teenage boys in the area who wanted to earn some money to treat their girlfriends. We also raised chickens and grew feed corn. I lived and worked on the farm for 5 years and it was very hard work but I wouldn't give up the memories for all the money in the world. Thanks again Pete!

I love the sound of the tractors, it is probably such a weird thing to say. When I was a kid, our landlord had an old tractor that was in pristine condition, and he even had a special garage for it. When you run your tractors, Pete, it makes me think of getting that beautiful tractor out, watching it get started up and taking it out to mow, riding on the back bumper ( well, what ever it was that we stood on back there, that I could hold onto the bottom of the seat) and just hanging with my dad while he did the work or even our landlord, who was more of a Grandpa type figure in my life. He had one arm, so his steering wheel had a rotating ball attached to it, and I used to love watching him use his hook and that ball to drive, it was fascinating. Such good memories out in the country. Such a soothing video this morning while I get my work day started. ❤❤❤

💖 your tractors and accessories working in your field. Here in Oregon they are putting the bales of all sizes and shapes into the barns. The extra step here is having the grass seed harvested first since this is called the grass seed capital of the world. I would call it the dust making capital of the world. Can finally breath after weeks of dust being kicked up all around us for miles! Have learned a lot about farming machines since moving here. So fascinating. I've often wondered, does it feel odd to sit behind the rear wheels compared to a 'modern" tractor?? We always used to say, the bailing is not done until it's in the barn !! I use two different tractors on my property. I'm not a farmer. My tractors are a 1986 Ford and a 2006 John Deere. I get on one tractor and change gears as if I was on the other one. Takes a few mimutes to settle in to the correct shifting. I can't imagine working with five tractors. A person has to be really careful around all that that rotating machinery. Have a great day and Happy Farming.

Of course I enjoyed this video, I always do. That was impressive the way you backed the baler into it's spot. Well done.

Love making hay. Have to smile when I see you working up your "hill" area, and then remember what we hayed in NE Delaware County... with M's for the bailer and little Fords for the cycle bar and wagons. I think we were a little crazy but we mostly survived...have a great day and thanks for the memories.

Should be NW Delaware County, East Meredith home of Hanford Mill, a great old engine museum.

Seeing shiny tractors at museums or shows doesn't keep my interest for long. I don't get tired of watching them at work. They were amazing feats of engineering back in the day and they still are today. Very analog, very mechanical. A thing of beauty. Thank you!

Pete, I fully understand that you make shows about your farm and as I've said about you previously you farm your farm, you don't spend your time farming a TH-cam channel, unlike some.
You expressed a thought a while back about not wanting to just repeat filming the same activities. A few years ago on Sundays you did some shows about the business or economics of small farming. I think you would be an excellent person to make some films on farming business history. I saw recently a piece on making Sheperd's pie in America and it mentioned a shortage of lamb or mutton. I also saw a piece on stockyards in the 1960s where there was plenty of sheep. I cleaned up in a butchers in my last year of school. I thought we got lamb's liver from America. Willson's brand? That and the concentration, or vertical integration of meat farming would be interesting. You mentioned a wait at times to get meat processed. I realise you are careful about expressing viewpoints on contempary issues but I think you could make some great films.
All the best to you, Hillary and family.

Feeling your stress with hay down and rain on the way. I grew up helping on the family farm using all that same equipment and I remember the sense of urgency. We always hustled but still needed sun to ensure quality hay. You handle the pressure well.
