    You assert that "we should note that Shylock offers the loan interest free, at first, and Antonio rejects this". This puzzled me, because I had never seen such an interpretation. Looking at the text, Shylock first offers the loan at no interest only on condition that a pound of Antonio's flesh be used as collateral, should he default. Where in the text does Antonio "reject" Shylock's supposed interest free loan - ie with no strings?

    • @DrAidan
      @DrAidan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yes, you are right that I am referring to 1.3.130-134 where Shylock says:
      'Why look you, how you storm!
      I would be friends with you and have your love,
      Forget the shames that you have stained me with,
      Supply your present wants and take no doit
      Of usance for my moneys - and you'll not hear me.
      This is kind I offer.'
      So at this stage he says he does not want interest (no doit / Of usance) and adds that this is 'kind' or benevolent of him. So in this section he does set out (albeit briefly, I agree) the idea that he won't ask Antonio to commit a sin by paying money for money. As soon as Bassanio replies 'This were kindness" he does then say (immediately) that 'This kindness will I show" and goes on to offer the 'pound of flesh' bargain.
      It can be argued - as you do I think - that this 'pound of flesh' bargain was always in his mind - although could he have been sure that Antonio would reject paying interest when many Venetians clearly did pay interest? In performance this moment could be made more nuanced. There could be a pause that then sees Shylock concoct the ''pound of flesh' idea as a way around the issue.
      In summary, I think you make a very good point and this is an interesting subject for discussion. Thank you.

    Hi there, can u plz tell me how to write a rhetorical analysis based on this play. What should i write about this play? Can u plz give me any ideas?

    • @DrAidan
      @DrAidan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      A rhetorical analysis is where you deconstruct the techniques used to create an effect or argument in a particular work of fiction. The most obvious scene to begin with in Merchant is the 'the quality of mercy' scene, where Portia uses a number of techniques to draw Shylock into a trap. I deal with some of these techniques in a video on Portia and within my other videos on Merchant - although I haven't yet done a video with an extensive rhetorical analysis. The broad technique to look out for is repetition - and then there are specific types of repetition such as anaphora, epistrophe etc. If you are interested you can find more about specific techniques by visiting: rhetoric.byu.edu.

I spent a lot of my school days resisting the system and teacher's instructions never until this clip did I know anything about the plot or story line to the MoV. Don't get to my age and have to say I wish I had done. Try instead for, I tried that. You will end up with a lot more, I'm glad I did that, instead of I wish. Excellent analysis and presentation, Doc. Thank you for posting.
    Does the story have a "hero" for whom we are supposed to be rooting? Is Shylock intended to be seen as the villain or is Bassinius? It seemed from the Paccino version that the dubious hero Bassinius prevails through devious means and yet we seem to be led to feel good about their wiles against the "nefarious usuring Jew". Is that right? Or does Shakespeare actually want us to sympathize with Shylock (which in the movie doesn't seem to ever happen)?

    • @DrAidan
      @DrAidan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That's a good question. There is no main 'hero' in the sense we might expect in a modern story, where we follow one person and their struggles to overcome a series of challenges. In this story there are three main characters - in terms of lines. Portia (574 lines), followed by Shylock (352 lines) and then Bassanio (336 lines). The play was categorised as a Comedy in the First Folio (published in 1623) and part of the design of the comedies is that they end harmoniously - with couples getting married. In this context we are probably meant to think that it is a good thing that Portia and Bassanio do eventually get married. In addition, Shylock would have originally been played with a red wig and a large nose as a cruel caricature of a Jew. But the way we now read the play it is much different. We see some of the Christian characters as cruel - not least Bassanio and Antonio - in their attitudes towards Shylock. It is also the case that Shylock is not simply drawn as a stock character; Shakespeare clearly went out of his way (in the 'hath not a Jew eyes' speech in particular) to make us empathise with Shylock's predicament - isolated in a hostile society. In addition, we are also moved when Shylock learns that Jessica has sold the ring he had given his late wife - this is a man who could and did show love. I hope this helps, but if you have any further questions do send me another message.

    Hello. Thank you for these precise yet informative videos. I have one little request: Could you please elaborate on how Merchant Of Venice is a problem play? This term was used in my Literature class and I need to discuss it in my exams. Hoping you'd give an answer soon! Thanks!

    • @DrAidan
      @DrAidan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There has been a lot of debate around what constitutes a 'problem play', but in essence it's the fact that the play doesn't easily fit into an established genre; as a result, the plays can generate conflicting emotions and end somewhat ambiguously.
      In the case of Merchant, it is categorised as a Comedy in the First Folio, so one would expect there to be a happy ending: which there is when Bassanio and Portia marry.
      But there is also a great deal of cruelty shown by many of the characters towards each other during the play - not least the treatment meted out to Shylock, the idea of the bond for a pound of flesh, and Jessica leaving home with her father's money and selling her mother's ring for a monkey. In addition, we have Shylock's forced conversion to Christianity.
      This is obviously a brief summary, but you can see that the basic issue is that a problem play involves a mismatch between what we might expect generically and what we actually experience; in addition, we might have ambiguous feelings at the end; are we happy? do we feel pain? A mic of the two?
      I hope that's helpful, but do get back in touch if you have any other questions.

      Good question. You should use which ever spelling is used in the edition you are studying, because spellings can vary from edition to edition. In the Oxford edition the editor uses 'Lancelot', but in the Norton edition they use 'Lancelet'. The variations are due to the fact that there are inconsistencies in the original Folio version. I'm currently looking at a copy of Shakespeare's First Folio (1623) and the typesetter spelt it as 'Launcelot' and then 'Lancelet' in the same speech! I hope that answer is helpful.
