  • Join us as we compare the Off-road capabilities of a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited and our Trailhawk. In this video we hit the trails in Uwharrie National Forest with a fellow WK2 owner. We get to see just how important the extra ground clearance and modifications we made to our Jeep Grand Cherokee Trailhawk are.
    We also get to see how our Falken Wildpeak AT3s stack up to a set of BF Goodrich KO2's.

    I really appreciate Brad and his family taking my son and I out in Uwharrie. We had talked prior to arrival about the limitations of my Jeep (ground clearance, ELSD, armor) but I wanted to see exactly what it could/could not take as well as learn from Brad to better prioritise my purchases for my Jeep, which have definitely changed since our ride. I appreciate all of the comments below and strongly encourage anyone interested in getting into trail riding or over landing, go with Prodigal...the trails are there but Prodigal makes the trip.

      @@ProdigalOverland hi... great job on the videos... I was wondering what your opinion is on the difference between the pre 2012 quadra drive 2 system and the current system... as I'm sure your aware in 2012 jeep switched from having lockers (elsd's) both front and rear to only rear. Now using a BTC (brake traction control) system in on the front diff. Alot of people myself included were sad to see that change as I thinks its an inferior system. Jeep says with the new programming the BTC system is just as good. Was wondering if you've had any experience with the old system or have a friend with an older jeep and could offer any real world experiences/comparisons between them.

      jon hipkin great question! We have been out on the trail with wranglers with lockers and I have been able to do the same lines in my GC I have also seen the front brake traction control system kick in and it does what it needs too. So far it isn’t the drive system that limits us. It’s running out of ground clearance.

    Also just giving my 2cents on wheel/tire size for GC owners who want to do offroading...
    20in wheels look great on your ride but they're not suited for offroading! Why?
    Unless you can fit a tire with 60mm height or higher on that 20in wheel, you're asking for trouble!
    You need tire height for clearance, protection, better traction when airing down & overall comfort.
    Airing down lengthens your tire footprint, providing added grip!
    A low profile tire can only be aired down so much before you start getting tire/wheel dmg!
    Just something to consider.

    Great video, Most of the off roading I do with my WK Grand Cherokee is not for recreation but for work all while towing a roughly 3000 pound trailer. I usually don't encounter a ton of large rocks, most of my off reading is through some pretty deep mud and water crossings to be able to access my remote jobsites. I was really impressed how well a stock Grand Cherokee can do off road especially while towing a trailer.

    I love the bells and whistles on the Trailhawk, but personally I went with the limited due to it's lack of air suspension. The cost of lifting a Trailhawk to fit 33's and long term replacement of the air system just wasn't something I was interested in dealing with. My Limited GC has an OME full suspension lift and RRO trim packers that give me a little over 3 inches of lift. After a bit of trimming 33's fit just fine. Personally I prefer this setup, but the electronic goodies of the Trailhawk are still cool. As you mentioned, skid plates and rock slides are pretty important as well. Thanks for putting out the great content.

      Is it possible to get the Trailhawk lifted and keep the air suspension?

    • @billmcgovern635
      @billmcgovern635 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelhainsworth9926 Offroad Animal and several other companies have been trying to come up with a way to lift a GC without removing the air suspension, but to the best of my knowledge they have thus far been unsuccessful. That's the only real downside to the Trailhawk compared to the Non-air suspension GC's. Basically to lift a GC with air suspension you have to tear everything out, replace with non air suspension or after market parts, and then possibly drive with a Christmas tree with of lights on your dash. One other popular option is to bypass the speed control on the air suspension and basically trick the system into giving you maximum lift at all times. Personally I just went for the Limited and have been very happy with it's performance on and offroad. If you already have a GC with air suspension I'd hit up Offroad Animal or Rocky Road Outfitters by email and see what they suggest.

      @@MrNuthed the 4wd low mode came standard on my 4x4 limited GC, but the Trailhawk's Quadra-Drive II 4x4 System with Rear Electronic Limited-Slip Differential was not an option. There are definitely pros and cons to both trim levels and while the electronic goodies of the Trailhawk are pretty cool, at the end of the day they are the same vehicle. Things like lift, approach and departure angle, tire pressure, and experience behind the wheel are all factors that make a significant difference. For me and my type of overlanding, the Limited was the right choice.

      @@ProdigalOverland Hey Brad. Again love your videos as I'm getting into building my 2017 limited WK2. What are your thoughts on going from 265/60/R18 to 275/65/R18 KO2s in regards to rubbing. I have no lift and its bone stock. Being in Hawaii I deal with a lot of lava rock and everyone loves the KO2 here. Bryan Collins Hey Bryan! I don’t have any personal experience with that tire size. When I upgraded our tires to 265 65 r18. I was considering that size. It seemed like some folks were ok. And some had to do a little trimming. I also knew that that size tire wasn’t going to fit in the spare tire cargo area. Another thing I see in retrospect is that a tire that size is going to take up the entire wheel well. Which doesn’t leave room for any debris (mud) on your tire if you get into that sort of thing off road. This could end up causing some issues.
      This tire size deal is a constant question on a lot of the wk2 forums. You might want to do a search there. Hope that helps a little bit. Have fun!

    As I understand it, for '18 anyway, the off-road package on any GC makes it the same as the TH . There were no significant differences except tires (though the O-R packages were different before '18, I think.) The off-road package on non-Trailhawks in '18 included the air suspension, skid plates and ELSD, etc. As far as I know, it's been like that since.
    One big advantage for TH, for the street, is it comes with the SRT seats.

Awesome video

    I'm late to the party, don't know how I missed this video. That's an interesting comparison.
    My understanding is that the air suspension gains some ground clearance but reduces the articulation. As much offroading as you do you would probably benefit from a proper lift like the OME, and with modifications inside the fender wells you could go to 32" tires. It would give you better articulation. I considered this before buying a Wrangler, the tires and lift reduced the difference in price between the WK2 and the JLU. I wanted the Grand Cherokee, we had a WJ many years ago and it was great.
    Another comparison you should point out is that Grand Cherokee Laredo 4x4 are almost all using a different 4x4 system and are not suitable for trails that require 4 Low. Some viewers may not understand this- some 4x4 Grand Cherokees don't have low range! Always look for the selector switch on the console.

    I love my WK2 (Overland Summit, 5.7) but it’s got SRT8 rims that are too fancy to take off-road. Took the risk once, and the quadralift was a big help crossing a particularly steep stream. I can get an alternate set of wheels, but I’m not sure I’ll have the patience to keep switching them out. Some day I want a wrangler to take off-road. Or maybe even another older WK, which I took out a few times and she handled it like a champ. She was also a beast in the snow. I literally sometimes dream about that old 2001. 😂 I cried actual tears when her transfer case went belly up, and it didn’t make sense to have it fixed. She had other issues, but a strong 4.6 and good trans.

    My wife and I are planning on getting the 2020 Jeep Grand Cherokee right now and comparing the Limited model with Off-road package option which includes the Quadralift air suspension/All terrain tires and the base model GC Trailhawk. I personally don't see any difference once you add the Off-road package to the Limited other than the red hook in the front and Matt decal on the hood. Are there other differences between the GC Trailhawk edition other than the off-road package? Limited comes with more comforts and amenities and currently there are more incentives for the Limited so it comes out a bit cheaper. Any advice from the Jeep experts would be appreciated. (We are a first time Jeep buyer and inspired from this channel to try out the brand)

    • @Driven-t1u1r
      @Driven-t1u1r 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I found my own answer. The main difference is the ELSD in the rear Axle. So even though everything else is pretty much the same, Limited models so not have ELSD. Will this make a huge difference in the on-road and off-road capabilities?

    • @ProdigalOverland
      @ProdigalOverland  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This will make a difference in the off road capabilities. But not on road capabilities. I think the Trailhawk rear axle is larger as well. If you plan on doing a lot of off roading I would get the Trailhawk.

    add body armor and sliders to the limited and I would take it over the trailhawk. The only nice thing about the hawk is the air suspension and well the cost of mtce of that is not worth it when you consider the cost of a 2" lift. The sensors etc on the hawk are for the most part useless off road, on road its nice to have but not critical.

      Sean if you’re comparing the Quadra lift system to the OEM coil suspension on the limited GC. I didn’t see a difference in articulation. However if your comparing it to a stock wrangler suspension. Then yes it’s a different kind of off roading. It’s not hard to get a wheel or two of the ground. But so far it hasn’t kept us from trying a trail we wanted too try.

I beat it up and it's been across just about everything you can imagine. It just crossed 188K miles on the original engine and transmission with no transmission issues (and still on the original "lifetime" fluid). I bought in new in 2015 almost 6 years ago. So didn't fail within 2 years. In fact, I only just now finally am wearing out the original upper ball joints. Trade in value on it with hail damage right now is a bit over $10K, I feel like I got my money's worth of fun out of it.
