    My other Seiko has an alarm too, its useful for reminding me i need to go to class when i have a study break in library. The fact that it isn't loud is what allows me to use it without disturbing others.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for sharing that, good point about that use of this alarm, which would be too soft in many other contexts!

    I am really loving my blue dial version that came in, after spending an hour setting it lol. Some bit of research I found digging around about the V198 movement is that it's 21 jeweled, I found that rather interesting and to me suggest this is very much a hybrid coupling of a mechanical and quartz watch design. Even in many higher end quartz movements there is usually less than 10 jewels. Anyway that's my 2 cents lol

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Very happy to hear you are enjoying that! Thanks for the info on the jewels, something I didn't look up myself. I think there's definite mechanical parts in analogue Quartz watches, what with no less than 7 hands on this model, but I didn't know they implement that many jewels at times. I suspect jewel count would correlate in some way with complications and hands.

  • @dmmarks

    One thing you should know is that the large minute and hour hands are completely independent of the small dials. The perpetual calendar, seconds, and alarm are based on the 24 hour small dial. That means that when you travel and change the large dial to local time the date and alarms will not be in sync with them.

    Hi i just bought the gold version. Nice review of the watch really appreciate it. My question is can you stop the watch and conserve the charge for longer periods. Like if you are not wearing for a couple of months so you can stop the watch and store it. So that charge does not get depleted quickly.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks man, glad you enjoyed the video :)You can pull out the crown to stop the time and the seconds hand from running, but in my understanding this does not stop the power being used up. Easiest is to leave it at a place where there is light everyday (not direct sun), and it will stay charged.

    • @dmmarks
      @dmmarks ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think that the perpetual calendar would have to be reset when the watch is started again.

  • @FloridaClay
    @FloridaClay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Humm, well what drew me to another variant of the Coutura (cosmetically different but with the same features) was exactly that it does not fit into a neat type of watch classification box. It is not trying to be something else and that is just great with me. It is unique. That's what makes it fascinating. I am drawn to its complexity and complications (I love gadgets), which are amazing at this price point. Will I wear it all the time? Probably not, but it is an interesting piece to go into my rotation.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that comment - very well said and reasoned, and I think it's actually what I've come to consider this watch as also. Different it certainly is! :)

      @FloridaClay 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My variant, the SSC560, arrived yesterday and I just love it. It is a stunner. I had been a bit nervous about how a 44 mm case would fit on my 7 1/4" wrist, but it is just fine. With the downward curve of the lugs it molds itself perfectly to my wrist and the design makes it seem to wear a little smaller.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome man, glad to hear you're loving it! And yeah I agree, the case and lug design means it wears smaller than 44mm... my wrist is slightly smaller than yours but it sits just ok IMO :)

    Nice looking watch at a price point that's not outrageous. I have two Citizens, and in a fit of madness I ordered an Invicta from the TV, because I wanted a green dial quartz, and they had one. But thinking about getting a Seiko at some point, and want a solar with perpetual calendar, and ideally one that can display UTC ( optional, but helpful when you work with computer servers and international dealings.) $300 USD max price. Advice from Seiko fans?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for that Michael - unfortunately if the criteria has to be solar with perpetual calendar, then as far as I know this caliber V198 is the only current one available. These Coutura models come in various finishes, otherwise there is also one rather nice Sportura model.

    Thank you for your honest review. I was considering this model, but to be honest, I now find myself asking whether I need something with these extra complications or whether something with a less distracting face and maybe just a date like SNE412 would be better?

      Thanks for the comment Andrew. I do think it is a very good module they have in there, but after spending a good amount of time with the watch, the design does seem a bit "undecided" to me. Given the choice again I would go for something like the Sportura SSC357P which has the same module V198 but a much clearer sport design. Cheers, Ivan.

    Hi, I'm considering buying this watch (unfortunately SSC377 is not available anymore so I opted for SSC375).
    Btw, would you mind telling me if 44mm includes crown size? I've chosen several similar watches and I'm trying to buy smaller size since my wrist is kinda small size.
    Your video helps a lot choosing the watch. Thank you for this nice post!

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Junsik, thanks for the positive feedback! Ah it's a pity this is not currently available (although I see it's still listed on Seiko USA's site, so hopefully not totally out of production?). 44mm is purely the diameter of the watch case, *not* including the crown, crown guards, or buttons. Consequently, it's actually hard to find a point on the watch where it's actually 44mm - you'd have to take the point just past the button and measure across from there. For reference my wrist is 17cm.

      @junsikchoi4219 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    How long does the power reserve last? What about long term? Will it keeps on charging itself from light for decades? Will it be a watch that could be preserved?

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi there... it's stipulated as 6 months reserve on full charge. As for long term functionality I don't think it's truly known. Even Citizen who are one of the bigger pioneers with Eco Drive have only had it around 2 decades... beyond that it's conjecture. I'm not sure what you mean by "preserved".

    • @voiceorecho7988
      @voiceorecho7988 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perth WAtch thank you very much for your reply, by preserved I mean keeping it for long time (like 50+ years). And pass on to generations. I am starting to collect watches and I like complicated watches.
      English is not my primary language, I'm trying. You can correct me in grammar.
      Thank you.

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah thanks for clarifying - I think you use English better than I will likely ever be able to use your language! :)
      I think in general if collecting for posterity and to pass on to the next generation, good quality mechanical watches are the way to go. Quartz electronic watches don't tend to have the historical track record to last generations - not to say it's impossible for them to last, but most won't bet on it. Part of this is that quartz really haven't been around for more than a generation as is - there is simply no proof.

    Interesting, the seikousa site calls the SSC375, SSC376, and SSC377 just "Perpetual Chronograph". The SSC560 and SSC561 are called "Perpetual Solar Alarm Chronograph". Although they don't put "Solar" in the name of the SSC375, SS376, and SS377, the specs say they are "light powered".

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the input Robert. Yeah I do find that the naming conventions and terms can be a little inconsistent. The latter models SSC375-377 do have *"Solar"* right at the top of the description when I look up Seiko USA's listing, but in the end I always find it useful to consult the caliber manual (V198 in this case) for a definitive list of features. Cheers!

    • @robertbrandywine
      @robertbrandywine 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      They say "Solar" on the face, too, don't they? Leaving it out of the name must have been a marketing thing. As to purpose, they could be worn in a dress setting, almost no one sees your watch under your long sleeves and jacket. I only "dress up" these days for the occasional funeral. I like this watch because people see all those "complications" and must think "Wow this guy has a hell of a watch. It must be expensive and he must be smart and do all kinds of exciting things like piloting, mountain-climbing, and scuba diving." And, I think quartz solar is the way to go in watches.

It's clearly a dress watch that leans a bit sports, not difficult to understand at all... it'll go great with everything short of a tux and would be a bit much with shorts and sandals, viola! Anyway as I said I still thumbed ya up. You speak clearly, do decent and clear camera work, you more than adequately covered the watches features and you're the only TH-camr to give this watch a proper review :-)

      Thanks for that Donn. Well actually I would say my biggest gripe is that the watch defies classification and more than a year later I still think the same - it ain't a dress watch and it ain't really a sports watch either... it'll go ok in casuals to smart casuals but most people would say black PVD coated watches aren't suitable for formal or shirt who tie dress code. In short it continues to baffle me :)
      Anyways, thanks for the support, it's much appreciated!

      Perth WAtch , once again you picked the pvd lol. do they not have a plain steel version and a dual color. I would agree with you, if someone picked the black pvd coated one than it is less the dress and nearly now on the sports side. But that was a personal choice and you've enjoyed it's uniqueness in the collection. Speaking of which they did make a similar "sports" with the same movement and features, in the sports line it is lumed all over etc.

      Even has your tachometer suggestion lol, in the sports version. Any way yes the one you picked albeit the sportiest version, is a dress watch. thanks for taking the time to reply and I'd definitely be interested in seeing more of your reviews. The reason in criticizing in the first place is cause at the end of a product review people are looking to hear the reviewers positives and negatives on owning the peace. And you list it as being negative , but it isn't the watches fault ya picked it and coulda picked a more conservative one in the very same line. But anyway the way you talk about it's uniqueness of being in the center of both classifications and truly neither, wouldn't you list that as a positive attribute? Like you said nothing else in your collection is like it. :-)

      Oh yes I enjoy the watch for what it is, and given the choice all over again I would still pick this over the other color versions. You may be right in that the placement of this watch in the traditional classes could be seen as a plus - I guess it's my gut feeling that for most people this may be viewed as a minus, or at least it was among the people I have discussed this watch with. Not saying it's "the watch's fault"... just my perception of it.

    Nice watch shame seiko have no large faced watches, im used to gshocks and diesel

    • @PerthWAtch
      @PerthWAtch  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that... can I ask what you would consider "large"? The Tuna designs typically have case widths around the 52mm mark... although proper Seiko Marine Master watches are not cheap.

    • @nightknight9415
      @nightknight9415 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      If you define "large faced" as 45mm to 50mm then Seiko has many. If you're thinking of the diesel wall clock sized 3bar garbage that was duck taped to some fool's wrist...nope! Seiko is aiming for quality and class, while diesel is aiming for classless morons that have no idea what horology means.

    When will people wake up to what Seiko can do. So much on offer with a Seiko watch, the quality and style beats Citizen, Bulova and delivers the best value for so little outlay.

      Actually I think Citizen are a very fair competitor to Seiko... they make just as good quality and style.
