Cabbage Hill is no joke, even in fair weather. I always saw those runaway truck ramps and knew they were used even with the grade of the hill without the snow and ice. How often, I don't know, but now I have come to the conclusion that it happens even more than the high number I initially thought of. Major respect for truck drivers.
I went down that hill to hot # 2 gears to high my shit was almost on fire The problem is too many terms at such an incline that you don’t think it’s a problem, but too many miles of that it becomes an issue
@Quiquecuttin Biggest problem I see is people being impatient and gaining too much speed. Then, it's a 45mph curve too much and they start smoking their brakes. Whether in my Class A diesel pusher or a school bus, I don't go past 40-45 until that last straightaway. Takes longer and I'm flashing hazards most of the way down, but I don't have to use hard braking and the engine is more than capable of holding things back. Just saying...

I've driven this so many times (as a non trucker) and I’ve never seen a truck on the runaway ramp. As soon as I saw the smoke and looked at the posting date, I thought it must be the boiler explosion. Thanks for posting!
Over 50 years ago I discovered I don't want to drive in snowy, icy conditions, and nothing I have experienced since changed my mind. Hat's off to the long-haul drivers who deal with this to get our stuff to us.

1985. Drove over Cabbage pulling a 5x9 UHaul trailer with a Ford Escort (dumb) when this was covered with snow and packed ice (dumber but no choice, had to be at Ft Lewis the next day). Made it over safely but learned a few good lessons.
That's not very wise. I wonder why? It takes minimal training to do it properly. The dangerous thing, for theequipment perspective, is the jake in automatic mode. It will gear down and jake brake automatically and over-rev the engine. The jake in manual mode makes things so easy.
Depends upon the weight you are at. For 80,000 lbs the sign says about 18 MPH (can't remember for sure). I think the sign starts at about 60,000 lbs and says 40 or 45 MPH. On that trip I was about 43,000 lbs, pretty light.

@@lonnielynn9566 You'll be fine. It's not too bad, just long. Use lower gears and the jake brake, if it starts to speed up on you then use the foot brake (sparingly) to keep it in check. Take it easy on the first 3 curves and then you should have it figured out.
They, mostly, stay off of the road because there's no grass to eat on the road. There are millions of acres of Open Range out west, no fences or anything. Cows do get hit though. One load I did in spring 2022 was to go pick up a trailer near the Oregon/Nevada border because the truck that was hauling it to Boise hit a cow and needed someone to finish the load.
Cabbage was my first trip as an a seat 20 years ago overloaded with potatoes. To this day I still have problems squeezing one out because I clinched so tight lol.

I'm from Sweden. Snow is fine as long as you have proper tires and keep a safe speed.
