ABOUT
In this lesson, we´ll be learning Russian with one of the most famous Russian songs - Kalinka. We´ll go through every single line, you'll see the lyrics both in English and Russian, and I'll slowly pronounce each line in Russian a couple of times.
Kalinka is a diminutive of kalina - which is the name of a tree. To simplify the translation, I kept the word “kalinka” untranslated. This song is probably not the best for learning Russian vocabulary because it has many rarely used in daily life words but it’s great for practising your Russian pronunciation. The chorus is clearly the "hook" of the song with the music getting faster and faster. Try to sing along and keep up with the pace. If you have suggestions on which song I should use next for my lessons, leave a comment below. Let's go!
If you liked learning Russian with music, there is a good chance you will also like my series "Learn Russian with Movies." There we will watch clips from famous Russian and foreign movies while learning Russian words and phrases from them. You'll find the links at the top of this description. you there!

This song was my torture when I was a child. My name is Kalina and as I was born in Poland EVERYONE knew the song and sang it to me. It is used to drive me mad.
Good memories.
Great name, I´ve never heard of it before! I imagine how frustrating it was for you
I was called Kalinka as a child. I always thought it was Russian and this song was popular when I was a kid.
Haha such a cute nickname!
This is great!! Thanks for making this song so understandable. Please do this with the song, "Oy, to ne vecher". One of my favorite Russian songs.
Great song! Thanks for the suggestion
Greetings!
May I bother you? I have Low center vision due to my eye disease and I am learning Russian. I am not able to see subtitles anymore as my eye disease has progressed and very much want to know the English translation for this classic of a song!

I am happy with my progress Learning Russian so far and am also learning how to play this Great song on guitar!

@@gregorywilson3318 do you no any good voiceover apps of software for English and Russian plz tell.
Incredibly helpful! Thank you. This also helped me with the alphabet. I know the Greek alphabet well, but this helps me get used to the other letters.
Блестящая мысль, Кристина, и оригинальная! Спасибо большое. Русские народные песни часто касаются души.
Спасибо!
Thank you to teach Russian via this lovely song, 'Evenings near Moscow' is also my favorite. Grateful if you do the same for this song.
Great suggestion, thanks!
Hi Kristina, just wanted to say a quick thank you on this video for all your other videos! I have been learning Russian for 6 months or so and your channel has helped me a lot. I can read ok, speak ok, but listening to Russians talk at normal speed is very challenging for a native English speaker. Your slow Russian lessons have been invaluable, so just wanted to say Спасибо большое !
Stefan, thank you for taking the time to send me your feedback, I really appreciate your kind words! I´m so glad to hear that my videos have helped you
Beautiful translation. Your spoken voice is lovely to my ears. Спасибо!

Brilliant! had to use a Ventolin Inhaler to get through the chorus.
XD
Привет, there must be a hidden meaning behind this song, it's so emotional and powerful for me. Спасибо большое 👍🏻
приветик
Большое спасибо! I remember singing this song in Russian club some years ago. Many times since then I have sung the chorus, but not known what it meant. Thanks again!
You're very welcome, Heather!

абсолютно замечательно, спасибо, я выучу это. Перевод тоже важен, спасибо, спасибо!
Hi Kirsi! Is this song famous in Finland?
@@BoostYourRussian yes, very. I don't think there is any Finn, who doesn't know this. And this was also one of the best and loved in the Leningrad Cowboys show, with the great dancers. I also remember seen finnish words to that in some song book, I'm not sure if it is recorded, could not find. But in russian, with many versions, very popular!
Спасибо, все было отлично! When I first learned Russian (1972), my teacher had us learn this song. Another one I would like to see is Небо и Земля as we also learned this. Thanks for this and also enjoy your books with audio.
Thanks! Небо и Земля Киркорова??
Helpful ❤️
Красивая песня.
Мне тоже нравится!
Love your youtube channel! Specially when you post that type of videos!!
Greetings from Brazil!!

Loved it! Thanks! I have a suggestion: the song smuglianka moldovanka.
Oh, great suggestion!
I have already tried to read and understand this song smuglianka, but it's hard.
@@BoostYourRussian на 9 мая? можно спецвыпуском оформить. Из военных песен Высоцкого как вариант какую-либо подобрать тоже можно.

Шикарно.
That was fun!
Glad you liked the lesson, Trevor!
nice!
Well as a Russian myself, this music was great 👍
Beautiful, wonderful! I had always wanted to understand the lyrics and now I can! So, could you do "Moscow Nights" some time? I don't know whether this is the right translation, but I think you get which song I mean. Thanks, Kristina!
Great suggestion, thanks!

Dear Kristna, thank you so much for the videos, very helpful. The songs are so beautiful.
Can you please make a video for the song Dark Eyes?
Great idea, thanks!
Прикольно
Mimicking singers is really a great way to learn to speak. I've become a fan of Алсу.
She used to have great songs when she started singing!
Потрясающе! У меня есть подруга ,которая любит эту песню!!
Которая или.которую?
@@PAULOJAN1 которая. КакАЯ? подруга есть у меня? которая любит....
I like the svetlana version too! 😊
Greetings from the philippines💕
Outstanding. Большое спасибо. Pleas keep them coming. As far as other songs, these are some I believe other Americans would like:
Дорогой длинною, Ленинград - Экспонат, Ленинград - Cymka. The lead певица B Ленинград is unbelievable. She may be the best singer I have ever heard. Phenomenal talent.
Thanks for the suggestions!
spasiba
Thanks for this lovely song! If you find the time - this here: Дорогй длинною is one of my favourite songs at parties, when the hour is already a bit later. It would be great if I could start it off with a credible Russian verse. :-)
Thanks for the suggestion! Great song
Sugestion for a song: Stenka Razin
I love this song! It's a real whirlwind.
Speaking of Russian songs, here's one of another flavor, it's from the movie Dr Zhivago, the funeral scene where the main character Yuri sees his mother buried. It's called the 'Kontakion'. Do you know the lyrics of this in Russian? or is it only in Slovanic? I don't know, I'd like to know them. the scene can be found here: th-cam.com/video/jffzeGOM1Hk/w-d-xo.html
Here's the full song: th-cam.com/video/efKa11psM1s/w-d-xo.html
Anna Netrebko, Dmitri Hvorostovsky - Moscow Nights
Thanks for the idea!
Спасибо Кристина за проделанную работу.
Pleease use белая ночь next time 🙏🏻🥰💙🥰
Предложения по песням на будущее :
романс про хризантемы которые отцвели уж давно
славянский фолк - Отава Ё - Любишь ли ты
очень сложная песня, самая на мой взгляд "русская" песня в репертуаре группы Калинов Мост - Увидеть себя, чтобы ее разобрать наверное понадобиться часа 2 с отсылками на культурные связи и моменты в плане истории/ментальности по синтезу в русах одновременно Леса и Степи, но вдруг таки решитесь ею заняться
Спасибо за идеи!
Spatziba "teacher with no name". In kindergarten (why do they use german words in english? kinder = children..garten = yard. Well..now back 2 my text) HERE in Sweden we use 2 sing "kalinka" in the Sweet Freindly 70-s. The words of the Russian song was translated into..DON´T LAUGH (it is very far away from the original words/meaning) "Kalinka, Kalinka, Kalinka my friend. As a starlet may you thinkel..my friend". then repete it over&over. HERE translated from swedish into english. NOW I KNOW THE SONG IS ABOUT A TREE not a girlfriend ;) Spatziba LOVE TREES!
Haha this often happens with songs! They don't really translate the lyrics, they simply write a new one that rhymes in a different language
Podmoskovnye vechera or Очи чёрные
Great suggestion!
I will sing it to my daughter!
I sing it to my son all the time haha
@@BoostYourRussian I have already tried with Cheburashka's song...there is a video somewhere in our channel...not really successful :-)
@@DialoguesinRussian so did I. I know the refrain by heart, that's a start anyway 😁 And that's also famous in finnish, so I know the refrain in two languages, and the refrain only 😎
I like to learn the song Дороженька.
Great idea!
@@BoostYourRussian here's link to the lyrics

Do Ochi Cherneya next.
Great idea, thanks!
How about ''Dark-eyed Cossack Girl''? The lyrics are very nice
Great suggestion
😀👍👌👋😍
Thanks for watching, Anna!
Привет! Спасибо большое за твои видеа, очень мне помагают. Только вопрос: оканчание "ою" для женского рода, это то же самое что "ой, ей"? Имею в виду, можно ли сказать и "с тобой" и "с тобою"? Пишу красною ручкою или пишу красной ручкой?
Благодарю!
Привет. Я пишу красной ручкой - так корректнее. Я правша. Я пишу правой рукой. Я пишу красной ручкой.
тобой-тобою в творительном падеже interchangeable. But -ОЙ/-ЕЙ endings are used for feminine form of adjectives in the instrumental case.
Please do кукушка
Great idea!
В очреде «Катюша» пожалуйста Кристина

Здравствуй, мне очень нравится песня, которая называется Ойся ты меня не бойся. Я знаю, что это Казачья песня. Это песня популярная во всей России?
Я не знаю такую песню, надо поискать
В 10:00
Какой правильно( ты над мной)
или как написано (ты надо мной) ???
Правильно так, как написано на слайде
@@BoostYourRussian
но здесь правильно смысл над =above .... не .... надо= need?
Привет, The only Russian word I know.
It all starts with the first word
Why does it change from калинка to малинка? Is it still the same tree?
Малинка means raspberry. I don´t know why it changes in the song, probably because малинка is the only word that rhymes with калинка hahaha
@@BoostYourRussian thanks for the answer!
Следующий раз мы ждём песню "Катюша..."
Coming soon ;)
