That's the spirit! Love it! Becki... psst.... just convince him to like... you know what, that thing we've both know... you know, yes you know 😉#what smellssonice 😎
It was like actual class. nobody ever done that in youtube history. they all say something incomplete to attract viewers. thank you for teaching it honestly
Easily the best explanation and application for the power of the tone curve. All other tutorials just say “curves are powerful”. No one specifies contrast isolation.
Watched so many videos on curves and only now realize how your supposed to be using them! Thanks, so glad your channel is starting to get the recognition it deserves.
Such a great video, not many creators give such a deep look into their workflow. Really one of the if not the best video on tone curves out there. Thank you so much :)
This is hands done the very best video about tone curves! I too have always found that applying presets just don't work, and you explained exactly why it is so, and how to actually make it work. Brilliant!
Doctor C dropping the knowledge bombs. I love the way you explain why it works the way it does. This helps me understand what to do with my own images so much better. I'm an electrical designer and this is why I explain to drafters why we can't put that bare conductor so close to that steel pole instead of just saying "move it". Thank you!
I haven't even finished the video yet and this has to be one of the best videos on the tone curved I've seen. In any hobby, I think understanding something from a very "technical" perspective can be kind of freeing because you don't have to worry about it as much later.
Gee, what a FANTASTIC video, THANK YOU! Loved that you compared basic adjustments with curves, I really wanted to know what the difference was. Just everything about this video is awesome!
Came by your channel recently and it's since become one of the most useful and entertaining; this is by far the most informative video I've watched on tone curves. Better yet, it was easy to digest and apply. Thank you!
Awesome video Chris! There's also the hidden curve "underneath" the point curve if you hit that little button in the bottom right. If you adjust that one first(you get a bit less control, but its still handy) then you can do the other stuff you showed in this video after. I still prefer the basic tab too but I know some people love having a curve on a curve. For some reason, if you do the point curve first, it copies that shape into the "underneath" curve but not if you start with the "underneath" one and then move to the point curve.
Thank you, thank you , thank you. Your scientific explanation is fantastic! Now I understand the theory of the curves so I can extrapolate it to my own workflow. I’m so pumped! You are a talented teacher.
I just wanted to thank you guys for all your hard work. Your channel is pumping. The both of you guys rock! Thank you for all your tutorials. I was one of the subscribers that subscribed when you guys had 2K subscribers. Awesome job Becki and Chris! Way to go! If you guys are flying in VA, lemme know :) lets Vlog!
This is the best tutorial I've seen on this topic! Instead of just copying what others do in their tutorials, I begin to understand how it actually works, simply after watching this video. THANK you Chris for your efforts, really grateful .
This video is brilliant. I’ve been using curves for a long time in PS, but honestly have only ever just adjusted them as a whole. I never played around with separating the RGB channels individually. I feel like I learned more in 20 mins here than I have in YEARS of messing around on my own. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
I love how in depth your tutorials go! You can just see how much hard work and passion goes into all your videos. Incredible job:) (also love the grading in the office shots!)
WHY ARE YOU GUYS SO PERFECT? I am new to photography and tutorials like these really make me feel like I'm learning these things too soon; which is a good thing. Strange how people who have never met can influence and teach you in so much and in such a impactful way. THANK YOU not just for this tutorial, but for making me and other people like myself a better and more knowledgeable artist!!
This is SO helpful! I'd never seen "protecting" certain values/colors like that - game-changer! Awesome guys, as always. Chris, *YOU* are today's 4-trophy Internet champion! 🏆🏆🏆🏆
Amazing explaination! I've watched so many videos on the tone curve and they just show an example and that's it, whereas you really broke down the process of figuring out how to achieve different things with the to e curve and I thank you for that! Not many people do that and it is really helpful!
Maybe one of the best tutorials I have seen on this topic. Thank you. I have been an amateur photographer since my teens in the late 1970s, bur nuanced understanding of Lightroom and Photoshop is still relatively new to me. This post will definitely help me get better results in my edits.
I love your technical explanation of how things work. Its one thing to explain what they do, but to go in and explain why they work the way they do and how is just awesome!! your tutorials are mint!! By far my favourite.
I do a lot of image processing and this is exactly how I first understood tone curves. What a brilliant tutorial starting from first principles! That's what people are missing - first principles understanding.
I really like these, guys! There are very few videos on TH-cam that go that in depth and that simplistic with the explanations. Thanks for making these tutorials! 🙂
You breakdown the process and explain things in your tutorials like no other youtuber does. I appreciate the thought and time put into explaining these things. You really know how to teach Chris. Thank you!
Wow, thanks so much for posting this Chris. I've watched countless videos on tone curves but all they end up describing is the whites, blacks, midtones, etc...but not the depth of control you can have with them. Thanks for going in depth and explaining how to keep stuff like skin tones the same, nobody else on TH-cam is doing this level of instruction. Thanks again for the tips!
I honestly just do the S-CURVE cause that is all i have learned from other tutorials. Now i know how it actually works. So i really appreciate this tutorial.
This is the best in depth analysis. Thank you. Please keep uploading this kind of stuff. I learned a lot. All other tutorials don't explain why is why :D
Wow, this is really amazing! I never knew how to use Tone Curves. The technics with pinning certain channels and then editing around those or really making your subject pop with contrast customized around them are really nice to know. I will totally give those a try with my next edits!
Great, now I understand histograms as well as the tone curves! It's a talent to be able to explain difficult things in an easy way and you nailed it! Thanks!
Thank you! I’ve always wondered why other TH-cam photographers seemed to use only the tone curve when the sliders are right there. I always felt like I’m doing something wrong since I mainly use the sliders.
wow!! Watching this video with some coffee!! I just LOVE how in depth you guys explain EVERYTHING!!! that resonates so well with me, because i love knowing things in detail!! Now I understand tone curves 100000000*%
QUALITY This is far more than just a tutorial, this is definitely the video to watch if you really want to learn fundamentals to advance your skill level.
This was awesome! I only recently got into photography and the first thing I learned about tone curves was basically to "just make an s-curve" but I did not fully really understand why. This tutorial really broke it down and I was so happy to learn that you can use the eye dropper tool to select specific areas. I am so excited to edit my photos now, haha. Thank you so much!
It should also be noted that tone curves can be used to more finely color correct, when you use the wrong white balance, than basic sliders. Other than that, this was the PERFECT guide to tone curves.
Radiologist made a more valuable tutorial about Lightroom than most of those photographers from Instagram does. Hell yeah! Thank you.

That's the spirit! Love it!
Becki... psst.... just convince him to like... you know what, that thing we've both know... you know, yes you know 😉#what smellssonice 😎

You know what...?!? DOPE!!! I mean really.... No one EVER done a better tutorial about tone curves!
This video and the histogram video are a masterclass in editing - Thanks Becki and Chris!
Zulu Fox Photo 🙏🏼🙏🏼💙💙
I just went from tone curve noob to expert in 20 minutes. Incredible tutorial Becki and Chris!
Easily the best explanation and application for the power of the tone curve. All other tutorials just say “curves are powerful”. No one specifies contrast isolation.
The very first time I did not skip the video at all in my lifetime. Very informative and loving it. Thanks!!!
Watched so many videos on curves and only now realize how your supposed to be using them! Thanks, so glad your channel is starting to get the recognition it deserves.
Oliver Welch thanks so much!

Such a great video, not many creators give such a deep look into their workflow. Really one of the if not the best video on tone curves out there. Thank you so much :)

Your histogram and Curves videos are excellent and far better then most of the tutorials out there.
Best tutorial on TH-cam.The others are quite boring and not engaging.Chris made it quite interesting and easy to understand. Thanks man!U rock!
My gosh, this is pure gold! Can't believe this is free.
All these years I watch tutorials on curves now I understand how it works. Thanks, huge fan of both you.
Most informative and useful lightroom tutorial I've seen. Well done Mr. Radiologist sir.
This is hands done the very best video about tone curves! I too have always found that applying presets just don't work, and you explained exactly why it is so, and how to actually make it work. Brilliant!
this is one of the most useful videos i've ever seen on tone curve. fantastic work
That was “THE BEST” video on tone curves I’ve come across!!
this is the best explanation of the tone curve I've seen thus far... and I've seen a lot.
You guys make these processes so clear that seemed so obtuse 20 minutes ago.
this is really my first comment on youtube. just can't help stopping this video and to comment here to say million thanks to you guys.
Doctor C dropping the knowledge bombs. I love the way you explain why it works the way it does. This helps me understand what to do with my own images so much better. watched 20 curves tutorials last month this one was the best one by far and didt just show the s curve love it
I watch this about every 3 month as reminder. Do never delete this video or we are no longer friends! 😝
I watched a lot of tutorials on tone curves, but this is the best one! My edits look lot better and cinematic than before! :D
Learnt more in the first 7 minutes of your video than watching 5 other whole videos together!
Love the channel!!
I haven't even finished the video yet and this has to be one of the best videos on the tone curved I've seen. In any hobby, I think understanding something from a very "technical" perspective can be kind of freeing because you don't have to worry about it as much later.

Very well done. Clear explanation and easy to follow. Fundamentals are really important and lots of people tend to rush over them. Big thanks !
Awesome video Chris! There's also the hidden curve "underneath" the point curve if you hit that little button in the bottom right. So insane how I find videos randomly that I ACTUALLY LOVE and that actually helps me. Binging all of your videos. You guys are so sick.
This is the best explanation of the tone curve I have seen! Same with the histogram video!
You explain everything so intelligently and accurately. Great tutorial.
Tone Curve is the one of the most confusing yet powerful lightroom tools in my opinion. Thanks Becki and Chris, this is very helpful :)
Laurensius Thomas glad to hear it! When I first started learning curves my mind was scrambled!
I love how in depth your tutorials go! You can just see how much hard work and passion goes into all your videos. Incredible job:) (also love the grading in the office shots!)

I never knew tone curves were that powerful wow! Great tutorial, Chris. Thanks!
Really clear and well made! Nice hair style btw!
Great video. Best one I've seen that explains Tone Curves
Great video! Never occurred to me to have "two S-curves in one picture," but it makes perfect sense and your helicopter example was great!
Thanks for the tutorial, I love how you guys edit your instagram pictures! Keep the tutorials coming!
Kevin Correa thanks much!!
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, I never thought about isolating the skins tones in the curves! This changes EVERYTHING!
It should also be noted that tone curves can be used to more finely color correct, when you use the wrong white balance, than basic sliders. Other than that, this was the PERFECT guide to tone curves.
The starting ‘shades of grey’ portion only showed how much depth you add to your tutorial. Commendable work. 💐💐
Why didn't I find this absolutely informative masterlass sooner!? 🤷♂️🤷♂️ Thank you Chris for that!
