Cop cars are an important symbol of law and authority around the world, especially in the US. But they weren’t always around. So what was the first cop car? And how did the black and white paint job come to be? And how has American society shaped the police cruiser as we know it? Join Nolan as he explores cop cars from the very beginning to today.
WheelHouse answers all the questions about the automotive world you never thought to ask. Nolan Sykes looks at the history, sociology and psychology behind the cars you love, and the features you might overlook.

a big part of being a car enthusiast is being able to recognize police car headlights at night
And taillights. Almost Every time I see dodge tailights my high beam taillights come on lol.
Is it though?
Don't be too sure about it though. I was once caught doing 160 on an empty road. Only one car was driving behind me and judging by his yellow lights I assumed it was just a random old car... Once I entered the city limits I found out it was a (older model) marked police vehicle...
@@stephans1990
You need to judge based on shape not color 🤦♂️
@@dillonh321 When it's dark out, you cannot really distinguish that much between the headlights of vehicles.
every time i see a new ford explorer on the road "thats a cop.. no one actually buys the explorer anymore"
Here in the Philippines' National Capotal region the roads are flooded with Ford Explorers lol. Guess I know where we get these cars from. Much more expensive here too with all the taxes 55 to 60k USD depending on variant.
@@RuiRuichi wow. they start around $32k in the states.
Here in Colorado you see lots of non-police explorers. I have one myself, though mine you'd be partially right in thinking i'm a cop, because mine used to be a police car. it was cheap, but it's annoying to drive. You can't speed at all because people in front of you will never drive faster than 5 under the speed limit.
It's not exactly a Ford Explorer it's a Ford Inticepter
@@Eagle10021 The chassis is no different than a regular explorer. Even the added structural reinforcement is bolted in, at least on my 2013. So you can argue semantics all you want, but it's still just a better spec explorer.
These days I get spooked when there’s a blacked out Charger creeping up on me thanks Dodge
Should we be afraid when we see police?
DesertSessions93 I don’t get spooked cause I’m afraid of police but the possibility of getting a ticket increases significantly when there’s a possible cop behind you, no you shouldn’t be afraid of police unless you’re doing something illegal
I'm mainly scared of them getting me for going a couple miles over, or suddenly speeding up because they're tailgating me
@RavenPrecept I got shot by a cop once.

I’m surprised the Chevy Tahoe wasn’t mentioned, that’s a very common one in Texas, probably the single most common one I’ve seen, with a close second being the Explorer mentioned in the video.
Same in Oklahoma man
its because th Gm Plant in arlington makes jsut tahoes and police depts get bottom line pricing on souped ones, i remember some tahoes have 6.2's 420 horses cops ate them all up because that option cost 0 bucks if youre a purchaser for police depts.
@@gentlemanzackp6591 well, that is potentially because if they buy straight from the factory, it’s gonna be far cheaper than buying from the dealerships, where they mark up the prices hella high, because that’s just how it works.
@@gentlemanzackp6591 East answer, that’s because the Arlington Assembly Plant offers the police package from the factory, and has done that since the 80s when they made the caprice there. I believe there is some form of long term contract between the state and GM (there definitely was when my Dad worked there til 88) And that makes it just that much nicer, easier, and cheaper for TX law enforcement to get their cruisers from GM.
we only have tahoes in phoenix az
So are we just going to ignore the dodge charger being a common police car ?
Yes.
Ummm yeah sure fuck it

@@frankyperez2729 well considering that chargers have been In service since at least 2006 I’m still not sure why they were completely ignored lol
Yeah, I don't know what they were thinking.
I've seen a crap load of police Dodge Chargers in the past few years, so they still got the firebreathing muscle car thing going on.
A dodge charger isnt as powerful as you think they are alot of them only run v6s
BlackPanther147 one time I confused a Taurus as a Charger
@@buzzfeedorange7585 true some have the V6 but mostly sold to smaller jurisdictions that don't see a lot of highway use. Most the ones that got the V6 compared its ability to the Crown vics it replaced. However I'd place money on every state patrol that has them uses the 5.7, I know all of Mo HP is the 5.7. Look at it this way the same motor that dodge puts into a 3/4 ton 4X4 truck is placed into a 4 door car. the old record he said that still stands I don't see how, as those chargers routinely go 156mph fully loaded with a fat guy driving . Agency's routinely sent them in shops to get governed because they were capable of speeds never before seen in Police departments.
dustyak79 actually they put the 5.7 hemi in their 1/2 ton pickups, they put the 6.4 hemp in their 3/4 pickups.

I'm surprised the dodge charger was not mentioned here. It is so used in my state, that any time I am behind someone in my charger at night, they assume I am a cop and slow down. I think the charger really started popping up in the police catalogue around 2013 when they made the body style more aggressive.

The issue with the chargers was that dodge stopped test driving A lot of their cars in hot weather conditions after they bought their stock back from Diamler Benz. On top of that their transmission turn to crap after 70k miles according to my fam that does fleet work for La Migra (border patrol). Now dodge fiat had to start doing hot weather testing near my hometown in South Texas.
The Charger Interceptor is cool but it seems like they were mostly released around the time most departments were swicthing to the explorer
Here in Mexico the Dodge Charger are the first car that ANY police department (even the federal police) see to use. And, just by one reason: as the Crown Vic was used because doesn't have any competitor, the Charger are used just because it does not have at least one rival. And the Ford Fusion are not that fast.
I've seen a few new Dodge Chargers used as Patrol Units. CHP got them on fast highways.

My dad used to be one of the 3 lead superintendents at the Ford St. Thomas Plant that the Crown Vic was made at. Part of his job was to take a randomly selected vehicle home from the days production for quality control reports. It was always exciting to me and my brothers when he came home with a Pre-commission cruiser or better still the interceptors. Now years after he retired the plant is not only gone but totally razed. Not even the foundations of the building remain. Sad times.

Worse Cop Car Story EVER!
I got roped into buying a White Chevy Impala. A major mistake. The strange thing is, everyone slows down when I'm driving around them. Everyone! It's the worst thing ever. What's even more egregious, is that I even find myself, slowing down when passing a reflective 18 wheel gas truck and I see my car's reflection. Then I'm like, wait, that's me. LOL.
romanieo just precautionary measures hahaha, I'm guilty of it too.
romanieo I bought an ex cop impala back in 2015 and still have it. And yes, traffic does slow down and drive less aggressive for the most part because they think you're an undercover cop or something, but at the same time some will let you pass them, making it a super convenient car for traffic.
romanieo My grandpa bought 2 chevy caprice cop cars and has some pictures of them before the stickers and lights came off.
Our Crown Vics worked 24 hrs a day for over 200,000 miles before they were mostly junk. And sold them to civilians.
If you have a spot light still on it, look online for one of the plates that cover the hole, and remove the spotlight.

My Dad and I are currently working on a 1969 Polara that was previously a CHP car. It has the 440 Magnum aka 440TNT if you are working on a Chrysler and not a Dodge or Plymouth. The gentleman he bought it from was originally from Cali and gave Dad the receipt where ye bought it from Orange County, CA. According to a Hemmings motor magazine article CA ordered 1,500 Polaras in 1969 and as of the time it was released, there were 11 left. Dad called and said, we have #12. The author doubted it and stated all options CA ordered that other states didn't such as the red and clear spotlights as shown in the video. Dad took photos of each feature as well as the receipt and the gentleman was able to confirm we are the 12th one left.

Interestingly, if you're in northern Texas near the OK/TX border, the highway patrol drive unmarked pickup trucks! They bought the Pontiac because the previous car couldn't catch XKE's and similar. It had a 421 with three two barrel carbs. You can see such a set up at 1:41 .
The car had problems, back firing in the carbs. Well, one night, the whole car caught on fire. The officer did manage a radio contact before he exited. Fire extinguisher was useless. What really made it bad was the car had an electric fuel pump and it just kept pushing gasoline to the burning engine! Guess he forgot to turn the key off in all of the excitement.

The Crown Vic is honestly the most iconic to me…it’s amazing, reliable, credible, and highly capable.
My family was partners in an AMC Dealership. In 1968, we sold 41 "Police Package Ambassador DL's" to police departments in three Pennsylvania counties. They all had "worked" 343 V-8's; cooling systems for the "Torque Command" transmissions, and the engines which were 33% higher capacity than standard models; special order Motorola 90-amp alternators; chrome "pusher" front bumpers; and speedometer/odometer combinations which had "CERTIFIED" written below the hi-beam indicator.
Being a little kid at the time, I was most impressed by just how comfortable the front seat was. That was also the first time which I noticed 'shoulder belts' mounted to the center pillar, and stowed along the lower roof-line.
I still remember my old man removing the "10-Code List" from the driver's sun visor, and Xeroxing a bushel of them at the library.

My great grandfather was a purchasing agent for Allstate insurance sometime around 50 years ago. He found that in the Allstate fleet, Plymouth cost the most in maintenance and downtime whilst AMC cost the less. He became such a proponent for AMC that he eventually opened his own AMC dealership
That’s awesome! AMC had some damned good cars, they are highly underrated!
This was actually a very informative and cool video, good job guys
Those big 1969 Dodge Polara police Cruisers with 440s and 383s hauled serious ass though.
charger master the 383 was a chevy
Nathan Simpson gm and Chrysler both made a vary different version of 383s
Yeah they did
383 was a Plymouth/Dodge/Chrysler/DeSoto factory engine 1958-71. A 383 Chevy is not a factory engine,that's a 350 .030 over,with a custom re-ground 400 SBC crank.....it's a machine shop/rebuilders job.
The '71 Fury with a 440 wasn't a slouch,either? ( I had one many years ago,an old Trooper Car?)
I was cruising thru Texas one summer night, around 2 am, heading for Waco...in my supercharged Custom 73 Corvette...
T-Tops were off, temperature was around 75 degrees, and I was moving comfortably at about 85-90mph with the stereo playing "Fast Songs", like "Barracuda" by Heart and some Led Zep...
I was on a divided 4-lane highway -- almost like a low-volume section of Interstate, but it wasn't 'limited access'. the road was arrow-straight, with a gentle rise and fall over the rolling east Texas farmland... with driveways randomly along the way to some of those farm houses.
As I topped one of those gentle hills, I caught just a glimpse of a Cop Car in the shadows of one of those driveways! This was in 1978, and it was one of those square box style Crown Vics, with the big "popcorn popper' light and siren combo on the roof...
I was Certain he was going to come after me, as I passed him at about 90mph, and before i topped the next hill I saw his headlights come on and shine across the highway... So as soon as I was over the crest of the hill, I found a driveway of my own and made a Quick left turn -- careful not to leave any skid marks or tire smoke (no ABS to help out of course) -- and pulled into the shadows and killed the lights! [Don't forget to put your car in Park, or parking brake, and take your foot off the brake!! ]
Once the Ford came roaring past, with big 4-bbl Carb sucking in all the air it could get, I pulled out and began FOLLOWING the COP! I stayed back about 200 yards, but was running just as fast as he was! We were doing roughly 120mph or so...as we went thru small towns, lights flashing and siren blasting, running red lights, and even 2 4-way Stop Signs, as he was Dead Set on Catching that Corvette!! He never realized there were headlights in his rear-view mirrors and I was right behind him!! After about 25 minutes of FUN, I figured I was beginning to push my Luck, and he might get on the radio for help, or some other Town Cop might TELL HIM he was being followed! WE got to a stretch of road between 2 towns, and I decided it was time to end the 'Game'... I had aircraft landing lights on the front of my Corvette -- a Million candlepower with over a mile long beam -- and I turned them on, and turned OFF all my other lights (which included my License Plate light), and pulled up Beside the Officer! He was at the TOP SPEED that Ford was capable of -- 128 mph -- and there was enough air going Under the front of the car to almost lift it into flight! I looked over at him and waved, and smiled...
Then I mashed my gas pedal and drove away into the darkness! {MY car was well capable of speeds WAY past 128mph!!} I went only a short distance further, and got OFF that highway, and found an alternate route for the remainder of my drive to Waco!
And Now... "the Rest of the Story" ...
The Burt Reynolds Movie "Cannonball Run" was filmed largely in GA near the east suburbs of Atlanta. My younger sister was a High School Senior, and she and her best friend would go down to the Motel where the "Race" began, and where all the Movie Crew and Actors were 'based'...and "Hang Out" during the summer days. {They made it 'on camera' in several 'crowd scenes' such as the beginning of the Race!} There were no cell phones back then, only pagers. I was a Realtor, and a pager was 'mandatory' for me. So our Mom would page ME to go and tell my sister it was time to come HOME for dinner... I still had the Custom Corvette, and after several times going to get my sister -- and often 'hanging out' for a few minutes myself -- I got a chance to talk with some of the Movie Crew, and eventually with Hal Needham who was the Producer! { I had 'met' him and Burt, and Lonnie Anderson gave me a kiss(!) a couple of years before when I was a FedEx courier and was delivering packages to them while they filmed another 'GA Movie, but that's another story... Anyway, I mentioned my Texas Story to Hal, and he LOVED IT! So he had the Writers create an opening Scene for the Movie based loosely on my Story! But he put 2 Very sexy Ladies in a Lambo Countach ... and They got Caught by a Sexy Lady COP!
So my little adventure became part of a Hit Burt Reynolds Movie! And I got invited to the 'wrap party' and met Most of the Star Actors from the Movie! Dean Martin & Sammy Davis Jr, Jamie Farr, Farrah, Dom D., Jackie Chan, Roger Moore ....
Floyd Burdett Man that's a great story.
Floyd Burdett how clever
Floyd Burdett Too long of a story. I had to take a break.

I used to live in the UK and the city of Nottingham had such a bad street racing problem that the cops couldn't keep up. When I left in 2003, the police had bought a subi WRX STI in full police liveries.
Can you imagine doing nearly a buck 50 in one of those cars? It would be terrifying. LoL

Noel Roby yes! Lotus and Toyota partnered up and made my car back in the 80s, the suspension was designed by Lotus. They share the same wheels I believe.

I wish Crown Vic weren’t being discontinued even more, they’re cool police cars and are pretty reliable and spacious
I was damn sure charger would be mentioned in here but it wasnt and im not even american !!
Because chargers are somewhat new and just recently started being used(last decade or so).
They're such pieces of shit that they stopped soon after. That's why. They're nothing special. They had and still have more problems per 100 vehicles than almost every other manufacturer. Fiat, Chrysler and Dodge are 3 of the least reliable manufacturers in the industry and have been for the last 8+ years. Look up dependability studies on Dodge vehicle or anything from FCA. They're are ranked in the bottom 5 for dependability. Of the 5 least dependable manufacturers, Fiat, Jeep, Ram, and Dodge own 4 of those spots.
While Cadillac and Buick are at the top rankings in dependability, with something like 8 problems per 100 vehicles, Dodge is at the bottom with something like 60.
In texas police use chargers a lot
+Irene Gallegos I see a lot of highway patrol chargers in kansas
We can tell you're not american you would kbow the charger is shit

They should be called “Aerodynamics eradicators” or “Air brakes” LOL
The charger is being used now a lot as a police vehicle, the old Chevy impala was being used quite a bit too.
Josue Gonzalez the police Impala did cease production a few years back, and departments are phasing them out, I only know of one department near me still using a lot of them.
Josue Gonzalez Not in California Dodge chargers has transmission problems
Oregon State uses the charger as their vehicle of choice. And I think the Impala deserves a mention as it cleared the Gap in between the crown Vic and the explorer
Matthew Heckman
I think your cops use the Charger because they need the AWD version for the winter, right?
Neg Ative I don't think so and they're not necessarily my cops. Im a courier so I go all over Oregon and Washington but I live in Washington. If that was the case as the one you made it would make more sense for them to use the Ford explorer
What about chargers??????
I agree but I reckon the coppers should use the challenger and demon as well

I live in North Alabama and our neighboring county has a c5 vette they sometimes use as an undercover, but my city's pd has a 2016 mustang 5.0 with a roush supercharger on it. The local dealership built it and donated it to them, so we have to deal with a 670hp 5.0 that sits up on the interstate just waiting for a high speed chase. I saw a newer corvette blow by me late one night on the interstate doing probably around 120 or so. Normally I would have messed around with him because I have a 2017 5.0 myself that's got several mods to it, but something told me not to. Long story short about 3 miles down the road that vette was sitting on the side of the road with that police 5.0 behind it....lol

Here in Canada we have cops driving Dodge chargers.
Alexander Dotzko Most cops in the U.S. use Dodge Chargers as well.
I live in Alberta and I usually see them driving either Suburbans, F-150s, Explorers or Expeditions. They're muscle cars might be nice for speed up here but due to our weather conditions we need a lot more vehicles that can tank it in snowy conditions.
@@thefabulouskitten7204 that's what we have in upstate ny. The police use a Tahoe, explorer, charger and Taurus. A few towns have f-150s.
Same in America it's weird he never mentioned it
Alexander Dotzko around here in Saskatchewan you’ll see explorers, Taurus’ and the occasional F-150 or 1500 Silverado
