    The best thing of riding my bicycle in The Netherlands is how I'm always moving. I only have to stop for red lights and maybe some crosswalks. I never have to deal with traffic jams, speed limits & tickets, parking and maintenance costs.. and to top it all off, i'm not destroying the planet I live on with constantly burning fuel. Oh and, going by car is slower here in Amsterdam :)

    I miss this. I lived in Den Haag for a year and was part of this. I even used to ride a bakfiets for my Nanny kid’s. Never thought I would miss that bike..but I do

    I quite miss Den Haag i was born here & lived here until 2002. The suburbs of London is complete chaos with pedestrians & bicyles all trying to share the same pavement. Its worse during the morning & evening rush hours.

    I think I counted 5 Brompton bicycles in this clip; I didn't realise they had become that popular in the Netherlands.

    • @wimahlers
      @wimahlers 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Brompton is a foldable bicycle. The reason they are popular is because you are allowed to travel with them in public transportation during rush hours.
      Also, some people take these bikes in their car, commute to the edge of the city, park, and then cycle the remaining distance to work. Either to save time, parking charges, or both.

      @woutervanr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you only counted 5 I wouldn't say they're that popular. Do remember though that this is the Hague, not a small village. They're only there where there is loads of public transport near.

    Seeing this so much easier option to have multiple transport options especially here in Brisbane, Australia. We have new Metro (name is not right for right wind party because it not a metro standard - its a rubber tyred bus!) getting built in 2021. Our cycleways are vast network but nothing commuting wise like the Dutch does.
    In this video I am seeing lot of red light runners. Glad we aren't alone on this issue.

      Here they build a new tram line, and rather than stop lights, they've added warning lights which ring when a tram of bus is going to cross. It effectively doesn't change anything compared to right light runners, except recognizing that cyclists have a clear view of the situation and permitting them the freedom.

    Dutch are efficient, metro = gone = go.
    "we" decide when it's safe, not a red light on a pole. This is a single track, nothing can happen, there's not a metro going to fall from the sky all of a sudden.
    "we" really need those 3 seconds !!!!! (things get different when we see a friend in the supermarket, then we talk for 10 minutes and block the whole aisle with our shopping trolleys)

    I am wondering what's on the blinking yellow display. Is it the outline of a tram, or some word like 'wacht' maybe?

    • @marcg.3333
      @marcg.3333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think you are talking about the yellow/orange Digital text on the back and side? That is simply the route information. (perhaps I am not understanding you correctly)

    • @jerickfreyre
      @jerickfreyre 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I meant on the traffic light posts for the tram crossing when the tram approaches. There are the lights closer to the camera with yellow and red bicycle-shaped lights. But I am curious about the one furthest away which blinks something in yellow :)

    • @marcg.3333
      @marcg.3333 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh :) The light post just passed the railway? That is also a bicycle shaped light. Harder to make out on camera but it's the same as the one in front of it it. I am pretty sure. I've been away from home for about twenty years though. I could be wrong.

    • @jerickfreyre

      good question. I think this video will answer it. I think most will be able to handle it. For most they will have a life time of experience to help them navigate traffic. But in case they are no longer able, there are also alternatives. Here is the video: th-cam.com/video/xSGx3HSjKDo/w-d-xo.html Made by this channel also.

    Why is the city called "The Hague" or "der Haag?"

    • @Erik-ou3tl
      @Erik-ou3tl 6 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      the full name is 's Gravenshage, which means 'the Count's' hedge, or small wood. The city started around the lands of a local Count, and grew from there. Den Haag is the shortend version of the full name. mouths better.

    • @maozedong44
      @maozedong44 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It has always been called "den haag" "die haghe" later they came up with the stupid "sgravenhage" to make it more posh. But The Hague is its original name from the 13th century on. The city itself has stopped using "sgravenhage".

      Tomas Hernandez, the only reason for the existence of a Starbucks in the Netherlands is to cater to tourists. The Dutch, for the majority, don't like that crap...

    Ok. I'm schocked as fuck. I've counted only *3* _PEOPLE_ Who showed what direction they ware gowing by pointing it out with their arms...
    For everyone who reads this. If you're about to turn right, point out your right arm before and while making the turn. Same for going left...
    Now i'm going to count how many people who crossed the red light...
    Edit:
    I've counted 18 people who crossed the line after the Red Light turned on. I also count people who cross the line whenever the tram already passed and the red light is still on...

      I think you don't see the whole picture here.
      As a cyclist,
      You can signal your intentions by the place/track you chose on the bike path,
      Your speed and the direction you're looking tell what you want to do,
      By following someone who goes in the same direction, you don't need to signal anymore. You 'belong to that group'.
      Have you seen any cyclist here that was surprised by the actions of the other traffic ?
      I haven't.
      I guess you must have experienced it, for several month, to be able to judge.
      Edit: En ik ben er ingetrapt. Jij zou moeten weten hoe het hier werkt.
