Keeping it real as always 🤎 Hopefully, all appreciate my honest thoughts on this! I love Space Engineers, I want to see it succeed, but I think SE 2 needs a bit more time. Let me know what you think!
Did they ever answer the question on wether they where dumping steam workshop on not in favor of mod IO? (I prefer workshop hope mod community ralleys behind this should they not go the workshop route)
@@CaptainJack If you are really a big fan of the game, I believe that by paying this amount, even though it is high, we are investing in a better game in the future. Which company talks so openly about the development of their own games like this and asks for feedback from fans? I think this move is totally fair
I completely respect your thoughts on the limited gameplay available in the Alpha, but as a software engineer, I respect what they are trying to do. Releasing the game at this early stage allows for some amazing QA (Quality Assurance) to take place. QA that would otherwise cost a very large sum of money. This allows them to get feedback from the community on what works/doesn’t, while devoting the monetary resources toward continued development. An Alpha release of most software should represent roughly 20% of the finished product. I think that idea has become a bit lost in the recent years of early access everything. That being said, your cautions to your viewers is very respectable. I think we all are just eager to get our hands on the full game.
i just want to get my hands on that new grid system. i wont be pre-ordering but for me personally the 30 bucks ill spend on early access and play just building stuff with that grid system is worth it. Ofcourse not everyone sees that amount of value yet and also everyone is in a different finacial situation so the general advice you give for people to wait seems perfectly logical. Thanks for the Videos Jack good stuff as always.
Guys, I want you to consider this: CEO of the company that makes an early access game says basically to think twice before you preorder said game. Have you ever seen something like this? Also , SE1 was in a similar state all these years ago : no functional blocks , no planets , no coherent UI , no inventory , basically, etc. We’ve been there, done that. Granted, another scale and it took Keens around 10 years to complete the features provided , but still. The least I can say is I don’t see malice here , I don’t see the KSP situation as, well, the Chez legends they are , Keens did not go for publisher. Dear Keen Software House team. You probably see by the comments that we trust in you. We believe you are ready , able and willing to do things right. You have our support, you have our patience. We also see how scary and difficult it is for you, but remember , you earned trust of the fanbase , been open (sometimes too open) about the development process, you know the engine, you know the game, you know the fanbase. You can trust us as we trust you, and in your case it means a lot. God speed.
I preordered, the price is low for what the game provides(to me), and Keen seem dedicated to making SE2 work. Their dlc model is praiseworthy as they usually don't have blatant pay to win or power creep blocks. You can if you want buy space engineers on sale, and have almost the full experience by just adding in modded blocks. I just give some money to Keen because I want their continued development. PS: always remember that early access is not the final full state of a release game, bugs and instability is to be expected, you can report whatever issues you have and then wait a few months with the rest, no one forces you to play if the early access/alpha/beta experience is not for you.
That's exactly what I'm about to comment, glad that you wrote it first. Like all of us, SE fans and veterans, we are about to test SE2 at January 2025 that will be like going back to 2013 where SE1 used to be in an empty space with bad UI and limited blocks. Instead of whining over minor issues or missing stuffs, it's always worth to report the issues and sent Keen team our feedbacks to make SE2 much better. :D Remember, guys: Alpha is alpha = expect bugs, report them to Keen. Somehow Klang returned.
ABSOLUTELY think people should wait to purchase the game. I've seen SO MANY people RIPPING into Keen in Steam comments, its really sad. I imagine there's A LOT going on in the background and the release is just a teaser of what to come. I REALLY hope they don't KSP2 our asses.
Yeah, sadly some folks out there forget, that this is still heavily in development. You CAN buy it to support the devs and help with feedback, gathering data, etc. But it's not ready for proper play yet.
@LaikaIvanova I do t have Steam but I have heard a little about that stuff. People are retarded, they will buy a game that is in early access and then start grilling devs over stuff not being there, bugs, etc. I’ve seen this on the Xbox store, people will even complain about stuff in finished games that are warned about too.
Merik himself basically encouraged players to do that. The current release is for players who simply want to be apart of the development journey from day one and wish to participate in giving playtest feedback early in the games cycle. He was pretty honest about not needing to purchase the alpha early access and they even were honest enough to give a time line if when they think a complete version would be fully relized for the players who wish to wait - whoch is roughly 3 years, give or take.
KSP2 was made by a different studio than the first KSP. Meanwhile its still Keen and still Marek leading the charge for both Space Engineers. Why do so many people keep bringing KSP2 up? It isn't relevant
I hate that people act that way. It's still in development it's not easy to make a game. Keen I think does a great job as game developers hell their not even charging alot for it. I think 30 $ is cheap. And people shouldn't be rude like that
I'm very glad the devs are keeping expectations at a realistic level, this is an early alpha release after all. Very excited for the future of Space Engineers!
This is how the first game launched. Either a lot of people have bought the game later in development, or simply forgot just how barebones SE was when it launched. Turrets were introduced, but it was several updates later before they actually worked. Also we had ladders, they got taken away, and then added back much later. weapons could fire through ships without damaging them, so guys stacked rocket launchers end to end to exploit that..... and then there was Klang..... who will probably rear its ugly head in the early days of SE 2. all these issues should really be expected with the game coming out in early access. They've built an entirely new engine, because some features people wanted in SE are not really feasible with the current game engine. Remember SE was not meant to ever have planets. They were added due to overwhelming demand from the players, and it broke the game when they were added. But the devs did manage to fix it, but there are quirks to them that SE2 is hopefully going to fix. the engine for SE 2 is being built with planets, and fluid dynamics in mind. and possibly Orbiting solar systems. As far as multiplayer goes, SE had terrible rubber banding when the MP first launched making it nearly unplayable, but part of it could be a matter of maintaining servers, and server costs. If a small limited number of people are actually playing the EA version of SE2, it wouldn't make much sense to dump money into maintaining servers for the game. Most of the drive for MP would likely be for survival mode anyway, and since we won't be getting it at launch it makes sense to hold off on MP for now. at least that is my 2 cents. If Keen keeps up with the development like they did with S.E. then i'm not too worried about it..... And well.... sometimes exploiting those bugs in the early versions of the game can be fun...
Reminded me of this yeah. Conflicting feeling wether I'd like to see it all happen again but in a better jacket, or dislike the feeling of waiting for years on a playable game. If all it has going for it is being a enhanced alpha SE. Then i'd wonder if it's popularity wil one surpass space engineers, as this release will definitely be a healthy incentive for the modding community to grow. ^Dependant of the development speed
@@blamudia8474 Look at it this way... You would wait for years for a playable game /one way or another/. The development would take time, whether we had access to it or not.
So you were okay with the state Kerbal Space Program 2 was in when it went live? Because everything you're saying about SE 2 applies to KSP 2 as well, and look at how well that went over, crashing and burning so badly that the game was abandoned, the studio gutted, the dev team's reputations thoroughly tarnished. The KSP brand is *dead* because of the decisions they made, decisions that KSH seems set on repeating.
Yup. I got the game in 2015 I think. And it was mostly barebones. Just a dude hanging out on a small platform base with a few asteroids and a big red ship nearby.
Personally, I think Keen is trying to avoid a No Man's Sky situation here... While also trying to get the community hyped for the next game. Keen have tried to make it clear that the new game will be in early access and that KSH will be working on SE1 and SE2 until SE2 is fully ready but if they try to make that "too" clear, people will enter a hate-cycle expecting something bad. I find it difficult to say if Keen should have waited to announce and release SE2, some players are expecting a full new game and I worry that no matter how many times Keen says "this game is in Alpha! please don't buy unless you are okay with waiting for expected features, we are giving you the chance to play with and help us shape the new game. SE1 is still a good game worth playing if that is what you're looking for" that people won't listen. They are expecting a AAA game from a studio with just over 100 people (not 100 programmers, just over 100 people total based on what was said in the livestream today). I think the reason for releasing the alpha is simple, the financial struggle that individuals are facing is the same struggle Keen is facing. Money is tight, and Keen is hiring the best people they can afford to make SE2 a truly great game (listen to the music if you want proof of this, the music is amazing!). And Keen is not trying to be the next Cyberpunk, or even the next Balder's Gate 3. Keen is trying to be the next Minecraft (a game that builds up over the years and works to always be a little bit better the next time you're on) and take what they are good at and make it better. To be honest, I am okay with this approach because it's honest, transparent, and a change from the way many developers have failed their communities.
$30 is not a bad price for early access considering Keen has never raised their prices on SE. We can be reasonably confident the game will still be $30 when it hits beta and again when it hits full release. If you like SE you're probably going to like SE2 so there's not a lot of risk in paying full price to follow it's progression during alpha. It would actually be the opposite if alpha cost less. Then you'd be getting a steep discount considering it will almost certainly become something you like. Keen can't really afford to do this as they have a very very loyal yet not huge player-base that will probably all be purchasing in alpha. They'll see future sales but their real future sales will likely again be in DLC. As far as the starting DLC I can't really fault them in offering a $15 pack of music and art. That's about as optional as it gets and is mostly there for people who want to feel like they are helping push the game forward. I'll probably buy the base game when it's actually released and at some point in the future buy the pioneer pack when I feel like it.
I wonder how many KSP players were in the same frame of mind as this when they preordered KSP2 though. Pretty much the majority of what you've said here could be transplanted to the KSP2 early access forums, and that didn't turn out too well for them 😥 Saying that though, I'll probably still get SE2 in the new year 🤣
@@Galerak1 SE2 and KSP2 aren't comparable at all. KSP2 was developed by an entirely different developer from the first one. There was no basis for trust there. People just forgot or ignored that. With Keen we have a lot of the same people working on SE2. Some even worked for Keen before SE1 was a thing.
@@null643 So, you want to buy the game now for a cheaper price and then pay additional money each time they release an update? Because otherwise your idea makes no sense at all!
@@XMaster340 I think null just wants a discount for getting in early which is normal. It just doesn't work well for a sequel to a game with a slow stream of newcomers and a high loyalty of regulars. I believe SE started at the same price actually. They are probably going to follow their same pricing model. It will probably get cheaper as they add new dlcs to buy.
14:15 Marek answered this at the very end of the stream, He said no do not expect all the blocks from se1 to come to se2 he gave 2 reasons; everything from se2 is built completely from the ground up high ress detailed... and legally he doesn't know if steam/Microsoft/Sony would allow this on there platforms and he would need them to sign off on this also. So basically no there will be no transfer of block DLC, IMO the second reason is kind of weird.
It wasn't that the blocks wouldn't come to SE2 but that anyone who bought the DLC in SE1 would get the same DLC in SE2 for free, that would have to assume that the DLC content even is identical in the first place though, its probably going to be similar but not the same DLCs
Something to note is that since these are vertical slices, what we get is not all that they have ready. Stuff that is ready may be disabled or removed for the slice only. Block functions like assemblers may be implemented, but because there isnt enough of what uses it finished yet, it might be disabled to avoid confusion. Imagine, it was finished and included in the slice, but there was no use for assembled components yet because survival isnt included yet. Players would get confused on what to use it with.
Personally, I think Keen deserve all the support they can get - real fans of the game will know how long it took them to develop Space Engineers to the state it’s in now. Further - the first bit of the alpha just being creative is great, gives us time to get used to the new system for building. It makes sense to have block functionality disabled, what use is an assembler being functional if you don’t need it for survival? For myself, creative mode only to begin with is great, cause I’ll be able to get used to building and hopefully improve on my ship building/shapes.
Keen: is more transparent about the development of their new game than any other developer has ever been Community: I mean, how hard would it have been to be more transparent about their crystal ball predictions about when they will be satisfied with this brand new thing they are creating from scratch
Building a brand new engine is a lot less work than making a few blocks have functionality. Keen probably took a while to make this new engine, and the rest will take a lot less time to make.
Same. I don't think I'll be able to play it on launch due to being busy with work right now. I just bought it because I think Keen deserves it for how much they've given us with SE 1, lol ^^
I put thousands of hours into original space engineers when it was just a janky creative mode sandbox and a dream. With what the first game became, I'm willing to give them another shot after they basically started over again from scratch.
13:43 For me multiplayer is a key feature as well. However in order to have multiplayer in the first public version we would have had to wait much longer to get the alpha. Releasing it now, allows those who don’t mind to test other aspects. Plus its best to find the bugs now before multiplayer gets tied into all of it increasing the difficulty of fixes
Already bought it XD. The new grid system alone promises fun for weeks. And when new updates come in, for example, for planets, weapons, survival, etc., I'll already have a whole series of blueprints available XD I've spent over 2620 hours playing SE 1 since the Alpha of SE 1, I've been through all the development stages, so it was clear to me that I would follow SE 2 in the same way. I expect to be able to build in creativemode no more and no less.
Early Access seems like it will be more of a playable test demo of the building system. If you want to mess around with the new building mechanics then there's really nothing stopping you from pre ordering the game if that's all you want to do. Yes the game WILL have major features missing, but that's because I'm assuming they want the players' feedback before doubling down. Not one game is perfect on release. If we give it time, I reckon this game will grow to be much better than any of us expected it to be.
To be honest? As a person that went through the entire SE development experience from pre-planets to the latest version with now 3000 hours to my name, I can't wait to experience it all over again. The good, the bad, all of it. The amount of fun I had with this game is definitely gonna be worth it in the long run, just like how SE 1 was for me.
I already know my purchase decision is to wait until it’s actually a finished game! I’ve already bought a game from Keen where I patiently waited for features to be added.
The reason there was little done with the interactive blocks is probably because they were focusing more on the other things they mentioned. Like the jet pack, the speed and such. The UI.
Multiplayer adds so much more complexity to game development, especially to a game that isn't polished yet. Getting a game that is stable and closer to feature complete is much easier to extend to MP than one that is always changing. Could you imagine how frustrating it would be and how damaging it could be to SE2 if MP broke every time they introduced a new slice? No thank you, MP at a later date is absolutely the right call.
It looks to me that the vertical slices are so that the features in each slice can be stress tested one at a time so the bugs in a slices that will be made apparent in the alpha stage can be found and fixed before the next slice is added. The medroom, refinery and assembler not being functional on the initial alpha release makes sense to me as their functionality is survival mode based and not used in creative mode. I would not expect their functionality to be enabled untill vertical slice 2 survival and planets as it is only then that their functionality would be needed.
I am looking forword to SE 2, and have wanted something like it for a long time. I have loved SE over the years, and I was more than willing to pay for the DLCs to support them, but I don't like the look of DLC being announced even before the first release. I have poored money into the first game, and now... A game we have to wait some time to be complete without hard deadlines HAS DLC!!!!! LIKE WHAT?!?!?!? I find this at best frustrating. THIS IS A NEW GAME!!!! The Idea behinged SE 1 DLC was it was an old game not many new sells airgo DLC to get dev money, and for new projects like SE 2. But this is a new game. New sells. If they are out of the gate locking new features behigned a pay wall to all the players who have faithfully supported SE over the last decade on TOP of the steep price for such an unfinished game. I am quite disappointed with Keen. I think it's time for keen to take a step back and reassess their position and business models. What worked for a game studio in the position they were in when introducing the DLCs to SE is very different from what worked for a game studio introducing a brand new early development game. I highly doubt they will transfer early DLCs from SE1. If they did that would be better. New players would have to buy them, but old players would already have them, as new things are added to the DLCs still bringing in more money. I feel like they have gone overboard with DLC, and hope they do better. 🖖
I’m cautiously optimistic about SE2. My big concern is performance. SE1 runs poorly when fleets or multiple ships are moving. I have a 10850k and 128gb of ram with NVME storage for game servers and the only game to run poorly on it is SE1
I don’t understand why some people are complaining and saying they should have waited to release it with more features. What difference would it make? Whether they released it now, or in a year with multiplayer/planets etc. you would still be waiting the same amount of time for the features you want. At the very least, those of us who don’t care, can still play the game as is and enjoy it in the meantime
I'd imagine a lot of the blocks added to SE1 from DLCs or alongside it, won't make it into SE2 if it would be made redundant/recreatable by the new grid system. I think SE2 DLC would focus more on new paint materials, interactables like doors or consoles, voxels styles and planets, or cosmetic variants of greebles like new kinds of railings, vent grilles, pipes, etc. Perhaps entire premade star systems with their own unique planets, encounters, and stories.
I dont expect there to be any changes to the way they do dlc... wich is just a cosmetic upgrade to the added blocks of the free update! Wich honestly, how else would you expect to pay for continued updates with no revenue stream!? Wich is completley optional ans you still get the actual function blocks if you DONT buy it!! Just be gratefull they have never implemented crap like loot boxes or an in game store like some other games have!!! 🤣
Bro stop confusing DLC content, with what is supposed to be update content, it's because of sheep like you, that Keen is able to get away with selling crap that should've been part of base game.
Best way to support this game's development right now is to buy SE1 or a DLC you don't have, best to let SE2 cook a bit longer, and in doing so you signal to Keen to make sure there is PARITY between the games before full release. This was a huge problem with KSP2, Cities Skylines 2, and other sequels lately, and I'd hate to see SE2 fall victim to the same mistakes, like overselling and self-sabotage. Also not using steam workshop is a mistake.
I bought Space Engineers in April 2014. When I did most people were saying the game was going to fail. I didn't care because I was really happy with what I got back then because there was nothing else like it (and there still isn't, imho). Thing was, the longer I played it, the better it got. Today, according to Steam, I have over 12,000 hours played, and I'm not done. To me, what Keen is saying is that they're committed to spending at least five years getting SE2 right, and they're also committed to five years of making SE1 worth playing. I remember what SE1 was like back in 2014 and it looks to me like our first crack at SE2 will be deja vu all over again. I had fun the first time, and I expect a similar experience the next time. I expect alpha SE2 will be barely playable for a couple years. For me that's good enough (as long as I've got SE1), and I'll be able to provide some input, however meager. That makes me feel all warm and fuzzy inside. I understand why they're not being specific about dates. You miss a deadline, however vague, and the "fans" will crucify you. What Keen is saying is that they're going to do one thing until they're satisfied it's done, however long that takes, then they're moving on to the next thing. That makes sense to me. If they're still on slice one 4 years from now even a casual observer would be advising potential buyers to give it a pass. They get to slice 3 by this time next year, that would also say something. Point being if you're the type to fret about it, keep your money in your pocket and wait. Whatever happens, I'm sure SE2 will be worth the money whenever you decide to hop on. In the meantime, I wonder if I can squeeze another 8,000 hours out of SE1?
Im fine with the vagueness as long as they keep us posted on progress as issues can come and if there was dates especially that far out they may not be able to make it Id just like to know roughly where progress is since they dont have hard dates
I was in SE1 about less than 30 days after it's 1st introduction in EA on Steam, and SE2 is mirroring how SE1 was released even down to the Green asteroid base. Big difference tho is that I recall having both survival and creative available at launch in EA, this seem a little more premature but it's with that knowledge that there is already a HUGE fan base that would love to help steer this that I think they're dropping it this early. Mistake?--dunno. But it's on my wishlist at least, and I'll wait till we have survival in place.
As aware as i am about the state of the game at first launch, this will be one of the VERY few pre orders i make SE Is one of my favorite games, and i really wanna be able to test the building, physics and visuals of SE2, as well as maybe help with development early on :> And i was honestly surprised at the $30 price, i expected at least $40 for a game like this
Glad I watched the video. As soon as I saw the release date I was like “I am gonna preorder this as soon as I have the money.” After watching the video, I have decided to wait until survival is implemented, maybe until water is added if I can resist the temptation. It is unfortunate that multiplayer won’t be added sooner, but if it comes with the benefit of being extremely good while being delayed so long then it will probably be worth it.
The game not having MP right now leads me to think some things currently break MP sync or otherwise doesn't function as intended. Now as a Alpha I get it, MP release I do expect to be in the Beta faze of its development a year or so from now.
When the first game launched, it was just about building and blowing up ships, discovering and exploiting bugs, but mainly about having fun, I wouldn't expect SE2 to be much different few months after early access release, I think the community is good and supportive, so i have a feeling that year 2025 will be a good year for fellow engineers
Idk if anyone else has said anything but one of the SE2 posters looked like an engineer had a welder attached to their hand/arm/backpack so maybe that means tools are incorporated into the backpack?
A lot of the appeal of mods for Space Engineers(for me) is that they are on the Steam Workshop. While I'm interested in SE2, I'm dubious of the Early Access phase. And not utilizing the Steam Workshop might be a deal breaker for me. I do not like having to include more and more entities just for mods. I get that it is easier for console players, but by making the title accessible to consoles, they are limiting those of us choosing PCs for our primary platform for games.
i know right its the same reason why i held off on city skylines 2 which seems to have been the right decision with how user unfriendly mod io seems not even to mention that consoles doesn't even support scripts
I don't mind the missing dates in the roadmap. it allows the devs to deliver polished features and having dates also has ramifications. If you say you deliver something in Q1, it counts as advertisement promise so you have to dliver it then or people can demand a refund, and people will be more angry about delayed times. it is about expectation management.
Honestly, I agree the biggest hit has to be the multiplayer not being anytime soon. I am able to wait but won't be in the traditional sense. I want to experience its development and to support its development. I understand some don't want to or shouldn't buy it yet and that is perfectly fine. For me though, I have waited for so long for something like this that I want to hop on in the moment the game is open and experience the good, the bad, and the funny. I just hope we all will be able to enjoy it together on the day it becomes more complete.
I think a grind then weld process for damaged blocks might work for this, grind time based on the amount of damage that will restore the build state, then a weld time for the repairs. Maybe some scrap returned for the grind time.
As someone who's played the game since alpha and hasn't been playing for a while. This feels really nostalgic to me. The new alpha is gonna be roughly as complete as the first versions I played.
Honestly, as someone who has played SE1 since it was still in alpha (had to check to make sure, but I purchased it on July 21, 2014), I'm not too concerned about SE2's early access. I've already preordered because I trust in the process, and I know they're at a stage where they'll need player feedback to patch bugs and create updates/content that people want to see. I've also seen quite a bit that VRAGE3 is capable of, so I'm genuinely excited for the future of SE2 (especially in terms of liquid physics and possible oceans when planets are added). I'd definitely agree with the sentiment that in, its current state, it won't be worth it for the general population because it won't offer anything even comparable to SE1 right now in terms of content or polish for at least the first year or two. For someone who hasn't played the series before, I'd definitely say get SE1 for the time being and get a feeling for how the game plays, and only then consider SE2 after quite a bit of time has passed.
While I was also pretty shocked that this is not launching with multiplayer support, I'm not worried at all about what keen is capable of and planning to have in the game. I've been playing SE since alpha in 2013. The game has come a long, long way since then. This game is being made by the same people and more. The company has grown since then and they have proven to me that my purchase in 2013 was worth it. I have trust that my purchase of SE2 will not be wasted.
Weird thing about the multiplayer aspect is that they are working on one task at a time, but multiplayer is something that is core functionality. You don't add that in later. They have talked about it on their live stream. It's in their, but my guess is, it not yet good enough for the first release.
personally, I enjoy the strategy of "it's done when it's done". I don't like the idea of holding up a finished product over keeping a release schedule, and I also don't like rushing to push something that isn't ready. I think this roadmap is satisfactory CONTINGENT on the weekly/biweekly streams and media releases showing development progress. What I've seen so far of their publicly released info tells me that everything on the roadmap will probably be out by January 2026, just based on what we've seen demonstrated and my understanding of the complexity of the given tasks. At this point, aside from survival and multiplayer, it seems like most of the work remaining in planets and water are performance optimizations and additional unannounced features. If focused on, these should be release ready within 3 months. Survival, even if they have 0 progress on it so far, should be relatively trivial to implement so long as they have a coherent vision of what it's supposed to look like. The building system and physics engine are far more complex tasks than the gameplay loop itself, so short of something complex and survival focused like a nanite build&repair system or smth, we can also expect survival to be within a month or two of focus (most of this time likely being taken by modeling for build states, which if available on launch would accelerate the timeline significantly). The only concern I see, is multiplayer. We all know the struggles SE1 had with multiplayer early on, and the number of times they've completely started over their netcode. It seems like they've learned from before, and understand that shipping with multiplayer at the cost of game stability is putting the cart before the horse, so we probably won't see rampant clang like we did in the DX10 era. This does of course mean that we can't reasonably expect Keen to be able to tackle multiplayer until after they've fully stabilized the "core gameplay features" which aren't even ready to ship yet (water, survival, planets, etc...). Now, what I'm excited for, is to see what our AI options are going to be this time around. I've still got my fingers crossed for dynamic LLM NPCs.
I think he was actually pretty clear that SE DLCs would not be coming to SE2. It would be dumb if they did because they came to SE while everyone in SE2 was in cryosleep, and this would be a separate branch of the evolution of technology and style.
after looking at the new tech and ability to make blocks smaller even on large grid, made me scared that it would be stupidly laggy but oh daym the quality on ships already existing on SE1 means that the quality is going to be INSANE on SE2 But not going to lie, after years of dev on SE1 they have grown amasingly to actually work on SE2
I think that realising acces to the alpha so early might decrease hype a lot solincr the people that buy it early will get bired quckly of the small bits of content and there will be less of a junp for 1.0. I hope i'm wrong and they pull a Satisfactory but guess only time will tell
I wouldn't doubt if the limited functionality implies the assembler, refinery and inventory system won't work in creative mode, as survival mode crafting isn't finished.
I’m honestly really excited to try the first demo (cause that’s essentially what it is at this stage) and I just want to get used to building with the new grid system. All the other blocks being cosmetic is completely fine for me as long as I can get the ship to fly.
I'm hoping that the reason multiplayer isn't introduced isn't because they don't have a backend version of it and haven't been working on it, but specifically because it would take away from the vertical slice. if half the bug fixes are multiplayer related each slice it would be hard for keensoft to polish the actual gameplay portion of the slice and the specific system each slice is supposed to show off. By putting multiplayer at the end of development it allows it to get its own slice once all the systems in place, without keensoft working on it every vertical slice update. That at least was my takeaway from how the slice system works and what they are using it for. I'm not sure if this is the right move or not, but it's highly unlikely they have built the engine and game without multiplayer support at all.
Jack, I see your points on this, but I look at it this way: I've been playing SE 1 since around the time that it was not much more than a physics playground. I feel like I have gotten more than my share of enjoyment for my original purchase. I've been making sure that I purchase the DLC's every time that they come out, not because I really want a new set of blocks, but to show KSH that I am enjoying their product, and to encourage them to develop the game further. I agree that everyone should do what they feel the most appropriate for the money, but I felt that KSH has earned a Pioneer package out of me, so I paid the extra not so much for the DLC, but to help support KSH as they build out this new game. Glad to see your take on it, looking forward to watching your reviews as the new content of SE2 comes out.
I’ll preorder eventually, and I do want to make it clear that they need to reconsider the decision on multiplayer being much later in the development cycle. I’d say multiplayer before planets.
I've purchased the preordained, I enjoyed the way keen dropped an update per week during SE1's development and yes, I know updates won't be like that with se2 but it's something to look forward to
Didn't marek mentioned dlc would not be transferable because of legal issues with steam and consoles? Around the time the lead technical developer came in. Forgot his name 😅
I got SE 1 years ago when it was alpha. Turned it on...yep it was alpha quality...logged back in when planets showed up. No problem with expectations here .
They have the screenshot of the system requirements on their website/blogpost, Weirdly there is a unsupported tab which leads me to think they rely on at least full compatibility with DirectX12 and maybe even hardware raytracing.
Yes you can im pretty sure as they stated in the requirements minimum gtx1660 super, which has no raytracing. I think the main reason though it's 1660 super and no 1050 for example is because the game runs on DX12 render, so if you have an older dx11 card it might not run
For me I have a simple rule. A studio abandons one game before 1.0, I never preorder anything from them again. I might buy it in EA, but only when it has enough features to seem worth the price for me.
Keen has not disappointed me yet, they are also one of the few devs that I actually feel confident about releasing a good product, even if it starts in a not great position. I think the potential of the game is worth 30 dollars, after all, I have the first game (and all the DLC) and feel I have gotten my moneys worth out of it, I have faith that SE2 will deliver just as well
I think I have to give KSH some kudas to tell everyone to manage expections and tell people to either wait unitl Alpha is done or get it and not hiding or misleading anything
I wonder how the underwater combat is going to play out though. Are the weapons and their projectiles going to function just fine, or will there be specific weapons (like torpedoes) for this?
+I would probably consider getting SE 2 when water/ planets are added and they have more of a better view of the road map. The NPC thing will be nice but I want to know more about it. Will we be able to use the NPC's and such. I hope that hacking will be easier then just grinding down blocks and rebuilding them. I have had the problem of grinding down blocks, rebuilding them and not unlocking the progress of the next tech blocks.
Frankly I enjoyed the entire development run of the first game, it was great to be along for the ride to see just how far it's come and how much it's changed. I'll be getting it because honestly, my first 5000 hours in this game was purely single player and creative. I don't need functional blocks essentially as long as I can build frames. Also to be perfectly clear, in nearly every EVERY example of an early access game I would always suggest waiting, SE gets a special pass for me is all.
I don't play multiplayer myself but I can see how it would be important to some others. Solo creative for now works just fine for me... for now. Still can't wait for planets and other stuff to find their way in.
I suspect that SE1 will be in development until a certain percentage of features have been ported over. I'm not just talking about planets, water & multiplayer, i think drones will also be in that list. And probably a few decorative blocks as well. Once SE2 becomes 80-90% of the game that SE1 is right now, i think SE1 will quietly slip into history. I think that future updates to SE1 are likely going to be limited to stuff they already plan to be in SE2. Likely much of it will be stuff like Factorum and other factions they want in SE2.
I’ve played SE1 since early access and I personally haven’t had a problem with keen’s development process. I’ve preordered already and going off SE1 I think I know what to expect for SE2. However I do agree if you didn’t play SE1 in early access I would wait to but 2. After 3500+ hrs of enjoyment in SE1 keen earned my $30 for SE2. Here’s hoping they don’t disappoint.
Against my better judgement from the KSP2 scam, I pre-ordered, but seeing valves new policies rolling out gives me confidence that if I cant launch it on the 27th I can get a refund, unlike kerbal fleece program 2.
I caught the end of the stream where they started pulling members of the team in and talking about music and in game portions and possible additions. I think the reason they havent specified any dates is because they are working out kinks in SE1 porting to SE2, ie. Dlc blocks, blueprints, possible lore, survival, and all the big changes to SE1 like automation and economy. It makes sense to me to delay the SE2 until they have a much better foundation of a game with they features they want. It seems from the footage and the interviews, that they just finished the VRage 3 engine enough to begin the project and most of the time was spent in the recent years to creating this engine to allow major scalability. Which is completely understandable but i think it is poor timing to have announced the game when they havent matched the capabilities of the previous game. If they had just teased the game and said they were working on something big and continued working on the game it would have been better received. Currently SE2 is a tech demo of the new grid system. Which is fine but maybe not to be paid EA and already with the DLC leaves a bad taste in the mouth. Overall im cautiously optimistic of SE2, if it is able to meet the Vertical Slices in a reasonable amount of time, 3-6 months per "slice". I believe that in a year or two SE2 will probably beome the greatest space sim/sandbox in the market.
I disagree. I really enjoyed seeing SE1 grow over time and I definitely want to play it and give feedback as early as possible. SE1 launched with a very similar scope. But a lot less polished compared to what we've already seen from SE2. People who want a finished game should just hold on to their money. I expect the slices to take closer to one year each. That sounds like a realistic estimate. But I guess we'll see.
I think it's reasonable for them not to have dates before they understand how long implementation and bug fixing workflows will take. They showed us an example of working water earlier this year, and they still won't have it ready for launch. If I was a game dev, having put that much time into an engine and feature, and it still not being ready, that would shake my confidence in any of my time tables, and I wouldn't want them published.
Yk honestly, Idc if its horrible at the start, They are truthful and saying that "Hey, We JUST got this game finally published, But it's not done and we just want feedback for now" Instead of saying that its completed and bug proof, It's a good rep for Keen software house telling the truth and telling us what to expect in the future, I support him taking his time, Cause look how great SE1 is!
The obvious blocks to have limited functionality are the ones that aren't relevant to creative: You're not refining ores or manufacturing parts for instance. So assemblers and refineries might effectively be little more than fancy conveyor blocks.
Best present for my birthday I could have asked for. Since I can't keep up with modernising the ships I use in SE 1 I might as well start rebuilding them in SE 2
steam have just changed their terms working with developers, forcing them to pay fines if they are behind with advertised release dates for content and they fail to meet them, while its to do with paid dlc and deluxe editions it may just be keen covering their own backs
Keen seems like they keep all the decision making inside the group that is actually involved in the project. Instead of corporate heads/investors who dictate from outside, making decisions for profits alone. I think this is why they are so lax about dates, they don't develop just to meet quarterly goals. They are a different sort of business from most the larger modern developers. That's my two cents anyway.
I think not giving clear date will avoid pressure on the devlopment team and avoid catastrophic release like Mass effect Andromeda which doomed the spin off that could have been great
Marek opposes in-game loading screens, but I wouldn't mind them if that would mean more server friendly setups and better linkable worlds. The way your servers have it set up for SE just isn't good enough to be honest, but currently I wouldn't know a better way to do it.
I was surprised about the release being this soon, but seeing how basic it is, i wonder why they didnt just set a date a few months away and launch with more features, also i do hope large features like planets and multiplayer already have a base framework in the game, im not a game dev but it seems adding features that large on top of an existing system could cause poor optimization? Very existed for what it could be in the future though.
I went ahead and preordered it. To be honest my current potato probably won't even run it, but I'm guessing I have some time before that becomes a worry. Basically, I wanted to further support Keen for what they've done with SE and support their ongoing efforts with SE2. As usual Keen charged an appropriate price for an Alpha (far less than many other early access games are currently priced at) so I have no regrets. Roll on Survival.
I think, I'll wait until mod support
i just want to get my hands on that new grid system. i wont be pre-ordering but for me personally the 30 bucks ill spend on early access and play just building stuff with that grid system is worth it.
God speed.
I don't trust them, they lost my support when they abandoned Medieval Engineers 😂
@@BHill-qi6rn Yeah.. gonna wait until SE2 is an actual game before spending any money
ngl im a top tier se glazer i already pre ordered ts
Remember, guys: Alpha is alpha = expect bugs, report them to Keen.
The KSP brand is *dead* because of the decisions they made, decisions that KSH seems set on repeating.
fucking hell we already had this discussion when KSP 2 released not doing this again
I was there 13 years ago for the first alpha, I will be here for this one.
I have around 10000 Hours in the first game. Just purchased the pre-order.
32,000 here, waiting til january to buy it.
Pretty much the majority of what you've said here could be transplanted to the KSP2 early access forums, and that didn't turn out too well for them 😥
Saying that though, I'll probably still get SE2 in the new year 🤣
@@Galerak1 SE2 and KSP2 aren't comparable at all. KSP2 was developed by an entirely different developer from the first one. There was no basis for trust there. People just forgot or ignored that. With Keen we have a lot of the same people working on SE2. Some even worked for Keen before SE1 was a thing.
SE1 has more content. SE2 is more expensive but less content. It should be equal price or cheaper and gradually increase price with each update.
Keen: is more transparent about the development of their new game than any other developer has ever been
Community: I mean, how hard would it have been to be more transparent about their crystal ball predictions about when they will be satisfied with this brand new thing they are creating from scratch
Building a brand new engine is a lot less work than making a few blocks have functionality. Keen probably took a while to make this new engine, and the rest will take a lot less time to make.
I don't give a shit, I preordered already >:3
Same. I don't think I'll be able to play it on launch due to being busy with work right now. I just bought it because I think Keen deserves it for how much they've given us with SE 1, lol ^^
@@altzan2602 I don’t give a rip, it’s new I want it!😅😂🤣
Same. XD
I put thousands of hours into original space engineers when it was just a janky creative mode sandbox and a dream.
With what the first game became, I'm willing to give them another shot after they basically started over again from scratch.
14:20 I distinctly remember hearing them say that SE1 DLC will NOT be transferable to SE2
Time to be part of the development journey, and definitely summon the entire wrath of Clang
I wish you luck, may the cable help protect you XD
@@shadowwarrior2772 I sure hope they managed to tame the Clang demon...
13:43 For me multiplayer is a key feature as well. However in order to have multiplayer in the first public version we would have had to wait much longer to get the alpha. Releasing it now, allows those who don’t mind to test other aspects. Plus its best to find the bugs now before multiplayer gets tied into all of it increasing the difficulty of fixes
exacly, frankly i hadn't expected an alpha release this early, so i don't mind getting alpha now and waiting for MP until later
Wonder if volumetric water could be added to ships to make pools. That’d be sick for a yacht type ship
The UI.
The Pioneer Edition costs $15.39, while the Bundle, which includes SE 2, is priced at $45.56.
*Thank you so much for breaking it down for those of us who would rather play SE than watch the 3 hour livestream!*
🤎
I don't know if it was Jack or another creator that hoped for it previously but I noticed they allowed blueprints in the toolbar.... nice.
What I’m hoping is that we will be able to transfer our old ship blueprints into the new game
I think we misunderstood the year again. 11,983 C.E. is the year planets will be added to the game.
😅
Lets goo! 2025 for SE2 is going to be great! Just bought it during the stream!
That basically makes us twins! 🤣🤣🤣
I have faith in the dev team. They've given us good content so far in SE1, and I'm confident SE2 will uphold that.
Im fine with the vagueness as long as they keep us posted on progress as issues can come and if there was dates especially that far out they may not be able to make it
Id just like to know roughly where progress is since they dont have hard dates
I was in SE1 about less than 30 days after it's 1st introduction in EA on Steam, and SE2 is mirroring how SE1 was released even down to the Green asteroid base. Big difference tho is that I recall having both survival and creative available at launch in EA, this seem a little more premature but it's with that knowledge that there is already a HUGE fan base that would love to help steer this that I think they're dropping it this early. Mistake?--dunno. But it's on my wishlist at least, and I'll wait till we have survival in place.
So you are remembering something wrong here as survival was added five months after first release of SE early access.
As aware as i am about the state of the game at first launch, this will be one of the VERY few pre orders i make
SE Is one of my favorite games, and i really wanna be able to test the building, physics and visuals of SE2, as well as maybe help with development early on :>
And i was honestly surprised at the $30 price, i expected at least $40 for a game like this
Glad I watched the video.
SE1 it took them about 6 months
When the first game launched, it was just about building and blowing up ships, discovering and exploiting bugs, but mainly about having fun,
I wouldn't expect SE2 to be much different few months after early access release,
I think the community is good and supportive, so i have a feeling that year 2025 will be a good year for fellow engineers
Idk if anyone else has said anything but one of the SE2 posters looked like an engineer had a welder attached to their hand/arm/backpack so maybe that means tools are incorporated into the backpack?
@@ankoakaboshi8288 That is a great theory! It would get rid of all the duplicate tools we get when we respawn and clear up the inventory a bit
LOL i love how he said yeah that cable is just for decoration at the start poor zero hoping for it to be something
I get that it is easier for console players, but by making the title accessible to consoles, they are limiting those of us choosing PCs for our primary platform for games.
i know right its the same reason why i held off on city skylines 2 which seems to have been the right decision
with how user unfriendly mod io seems
not even to mention that consoles doesn't even support scripts
11:39 I think in the stream they did mention a year they want the game to be fully out. That would give a range of time for slices to release
Now this is a quick turnaround for the video, nice work
Thanks!
personally, I enjoy the strategy of "it's done when it's done".
I already pre-ordered the Pioneer bundle. I hope to be able to give good input and feedback to make the full release as good as I hope it to be.
I think he was actually pretty clear that SE DLCs would not be coming to SE2. It would be dumb if they did because they came to SE while everyone in SE2 was in cryosleep, and this would be a separate branch of the evolution of technology and style.
after looking at the new tech and ability to make blocks smaller even on large grid, made me scared that it would be stupidly laggy but oh daym the quality on ships already existing on SE1 means that the quality is going to be INSANE on SE2
But not going to lie, after years of dev on SE1 they have grown amasingly to actually work on SE2
Thx man i got sick yesterday exaly so im gonna wacht ir rightnow^^
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@CaptainJack yes i did^^
I think that realising acces to the alpha so early might decrease hype a lot solincr the people that buy it early will get bired quckly of the small bits of content and there will be less of a junp for 1.0. I hope i'm wrong and they pull a Satisfactory but guess only time will tell
I trust keen im preordering to Support them. Thank you for the information Jack
No problem 👍
Thanks for sharing your thoughts :)
I’ll preorder eventually, and I do want to make it clear that they need to reconsider the decision on multiplayer being much later in the development cycle.
I’d say multiplayer before planets.
I've purchased the preordained, I enjoyed the way keen dropped an update per week during SE1's development and yes, I know updates won't be like that with se2 but it's something to look forward to
Plus when stuff does go bad, I have se1 to go back to, till it gets fixed
Didn't marek mentioned dlc would not be transferable because of legal issues with steam and consoles? Around the time the lead technical developer came in. Forgot his name 😅
I got SE 1 years ago when it was alpha. Turned it on...yep it was alpha quality...logged back in when planets showed up. No problem with expectations here .
My computer isn't capable of raytracing, will I still be able to play SE on a lower graphics setting?
I'm sure you'll be able to turn raytracing off
They have the screenshot of the system requirements on their website/blogpost, Weirdly there is a unsupported tab which leads me to think they rely on at least full compatibility with DirectX12 and maybe even hardware raytracing.
Keen goes the same rout with SE2 like they did with SE, and this was obviously a really successful rout. So count me in.
Yk honestly, Idc if its horrible at the start, They are truthful and saying that "Hey, We JUST got this game finally published, But it's not done and we just want feedback for now" Instead of saying that its completed and bug proof, It's a good rep for Keen software house telling the truth and telling us what to expect in the future, I support him taking his time, Cause look how great SE1 is!
pre ordered it myself. I really just want to get started with grid design and this will allow me to get my build fix.
The obvious blocks to have limited functionality are the ones that aren't relevant to creative: You're not refining ores or manufacturing parts for instance. So assemblers and refineries might effectively be little more than fancy conveyor blocks.
I bought Space Engies yeeears ago, had tons of fun over the years.
I'm happy to support them redoing a better version, even if it takes years.
Good stuff!
I pre-ordered to support Keen. It'll be fun to watch the game and community develop over time. I missed that opportunity with SE1.
so the cable IS going to be the first mod huh?
I genuinely don't believe SE 2 should have even been hinted at until it was at least equal to SE 1
