@MattCMG I've rewatched this roughly once a day since I found it a couple weeks ago - mostly cuz being 9 months pregnant is hugely boring - and a different section catches my interest every time. I appreciate it more than you know. I also never noticed the sketch of the drill in S1, that blew my mind. Tyvm for this!

2:09:13 My main issue with Katara in ‘The Painted Lady’ was the fact that she was so adamant in doing what SHE felt should be done, that she was willing to undermine Sokka & potentially sabotage his invasion plan depending on how much the river village ‘needed’ her. He had a point in saying they couldn’t stop to help EVERY village or person in trouble without it compromising the bigger picture of the Black Sun invasion. And to be perfectly honest, a better message than just the villagers learning to help themselves would’ve been Katara learning she can’t always stop everything to help people, that there ARE times she has to walk away - especially if it affects those she cares about most in a bad way.
Not to mention the villagers nearly turned on her the minute they found out she was a Waterbender till Sokka intervened in spite of ALL she did for them!

a neat thing on the point of the beginning and ending are psired perfectly....i don't think it was mentioned but the first and last acts of bending are the same, Katara lifting water (also the first thing she teaches aang is the push and pull for a wave) and the last is aang rasing the sea to douse the fires

I think the part where the guru talks to aang about lying to himself fits because he was trying to run from the truth of being the avatar, another form of lying to yourself. This is why I feel like aang lying a couple times throughout the series fits, cause psychologically speaking, it makes a lot of sense. Avoiding and evading your issues usually leads to lying to yourself and others

Amazing video. I have watched several avatar videos similar to this but yours takes the cake! I particularly appreciate your ability to comment on the “poorer” written aspects of a character or episode while uplifting the positives of them. Even a masterpiece can have its flaws, but maybe thats what makes it endearing in the first place :)

I think the katara episode that isnt about hana, which sets up a lot about what she is capable and how she will use her power. And her mom.
I am pretty sure the katara episode is inspired by rashamon? The situation from different perspectives, all with their truth. And god its a masterpiece how itr ends with love trumping revenge and her not forgiving him, not killing him, but letting him stay in his misterable life and focusing on hers now that, relevation. She is fierce, she is emotional wand will do anything , and can be volitile and powerful and angry. And scary, but she chooses compassion even if she is really scary when she wants to be.
Like she is amazing nuanced and , its great she gets to not follow anyones advice but find her own truth and closure. Like ther was some letting him live his miserable live that was not mercy at all.
Tai chi was basically training with swords and was used for combat and to slow train the movements. So tai chi used to be for combat, cause smoth un combat flow ther trained slow., its just , like not anymore.
Tai chi originally was for combat training , with swords. Just not the fitness way.

You gave me a new perspective of katara. Because I did not like her until book three, when she helped that town who’s river was polluted. Especially when she fumbled the bag when Aang went into the avatar state and no one was covering him. It’s understandable for your guard down but man was I mad.😂
I’m glad your channel exists, otherwise no one else would be able to convince me to like katara before book 3. I liked some moments and I sympathized with her, but didn’t like her character all that much.
She might still be my least favorite from the gang, but I have a newfound appreciation for her earlier parts.

    Rewatched this show recently.
I mean....it's allllriiiiight. Characters are definitely it's strength. Plots for a lot of episodes range from at it's worst pretty bad. To at their best amazing. And thematically...........it's....fine, with some bad and good messages here and there.
But the biggest part this show really struggles with is it's worldbuilding, more specifically, it's geo politics. They're pretty rough for sure. And there's a lot of reasons why.
I'm currently rewatching Korra and just got done with the first season. And one of the things that I think it excels at in this regard is legit spending an entire season only at Republic City and building that place up, before going more outwards later on. We know more about Republic City, then literally any other location in ATLA. AND we avoid all the problems that come up from the global worldbuilding that does exist.
In comparison, ATLAs first season is spent going around the entire world. We also started the story right in the middle of the timeline. There's a lot of stuff that the series sets up as backstory that'll be elaborated on later. So they HAD to bite those bullets later on, and make up narrative to fall in line with what they started in S1. When they maybe were a little inexperienced and still just get their footing in regards of what to do with the show.
I haven't made any specific arguments yet. Or really went through the weeds on any of this. Because I think you're the type of person who sees an argument someone makes, and gets this primal urge to want to reply to it as if to be thorough in highlighting why he's wrong. As if him not getting replied to would give the impression he's right. I'm the exact same way at times. If I was making videos, and someone made a comment explaining why I'm wrong, and it got like 40 likes with 0 replies pushing back. I probably would feel the need to reply. And I don't want ya to have that pressure. If you don't wanna know them, then I won't share them. And you can treat me as someone who's was more then likely just wrong. If you do wanna know them, then ask, and we can maybe have a fun back and forth.

      @@gwynethjonesmoreno7492 Of course yeah.
So a basic example of this would be Sozin is Zukos great grandfather. Zukos 16 at the start of series. Meaning the wars been going on for 85 years. Sozin was already deep in old age when he started this war. So if he's about 80 when he started the war. Then 85 years pass and Zukos born. This means Zukos great grandfather was born what.....150 years ago? Now.....with your great grandfather. How long ago was he born compared to you? Now.....let's add in the fact that the Fire Nation is a dictatorship monarchy where the Firelords children take over the position.........if you know anything about Monarchys. It wouldn't be a firelord procreats later in life. If anything.....it'd be sooner then the average person.
This may seem like a small criticism, and in comparison with the other one's I have it is. But it's the most blatant example of the writing not understanding basic political structuring.
We should probably go 1 by 1. So I won't tower you with tons of criticisms. So we'll see how you feel about this one and go from there.

Avatar is great but has some problems. Like I’m not a fan of Anng not wanting to kill the fire lord. It comes out of almost nowhere. If it had been mentioned from the start of the show that Anng didn’t want to kill the fire lord he wanted to find another way around the problem and a good amount of the episodes focused on that that would be fine but that’s not what happens. Anng not wanting to kill The fire lord isn’t brought up until the series finale and it feels so stupid. It just makes Anng look like the biggest dumbass. Anng saying that he has never killed Anyone is so laughably untrue. Energy bending also sucks since that also comes out of completely nowhere and was not mentioned at all until the finale. I’m also not at fan of everything with Tophs parents. it’s never concluded in anyway and we’re only ever told about how apparently Tophs parents didn’t love her but we’re never shown that. In fact that doesn’t even make sense. They sent guys to go and bring her back to them. If they didn’t care about her, why would they do that? I really like avatar but is absolutely not perfect and I feel like a lot of people treat it like it is. I really like how you still love the show but you still take the time to point out some of your problems with it
