“Skill and intellect not empty disrespect” unintended bars

I think the film is trying to show the hypocrisy on both ends. Maya and Lux/Hollow switching sides the moment their stance is questioned. The point being that neither extreme stands on any real belief and is more following the ideals of their surroundings. Battle rap being the extreme free speech where even the most real MC will accept a fraudulent rapper because of the art and the liberal college students being the extreme censorship in which any idea can be turned to become offensive. Each side is hypocritical and yet believes their side to be the right one. Your point that battle rap is portrayed as a no holds barred battleground where everything gets a free pass is disputed in your own video in which Behn explains that words have consequences. Also, the definition of satire you used is what the movie does: An over exaggeration of battle rappers throughout, yet you say this is "bad satire." Lastly, you choosing to not include any of the personal bars the made up a big part of the finale of the movie while also saying personals are very important in battle rap comes off as misleading and a misrepresentation of the film.

I needed this after watching and as a battler myself, it didn't represent battling well or the message it was trying to get through.

I think that the case with Adam was not that battle rap changed him for the worse. It was that Adam was so desperate to be seen outside of his dad’s shadow, that he became a bad person in the process. He didn’t need to go personal but he did because he wanted to secure the W even when Oz opened up to him in confidence and he threw that in his face.

When you brought up how all the characters remain stereotypes even outside of battle, that was my biggest problem with this movie. It was like the film was just using the ethos of battle rap as an excuse to revel in political incorrectness, and there’s something cynical in a self-congratulatory way about it...

So I was looking for reviews of Bodied cause I feel like many people would only look at the "I'm going to make fun of sensitive liberals" aspect but I really enjoyed how thorough this video was looking at authorial intent and what the movie felt like it was focusing on with the power of words and how context changes. Now I don't really know anything about Battle Rap but it did seem interesting how it was used transgressively as an art form but a lot of the audience took the performance as real.
So when I feel like the movie is talking about cultural appropriation and how people using different framing devices to say/do taboo things, I thought it was really working. It doesn't work so much when you look at the development of the characters, especially when the plot shifted more towards telling Adam he's a bad person than looking at the core of what's frustrating about this super semantic filled debates of what's offensive. (Especially since Maya is such a stereotype who never gets retribution she fully deserves)
I thought Bodied was a really entertaining movie in how the battle raps are performed and Joseph Kahn's direction feels genuinely stylized in what it wants to say. It just works only like...70 percent of the time.
PS: I thought the reference to South Park was an odd choice as what does well, as South Park falls into the true fault of being an "Equal opportunity offender" as they become guilty of promoting a troll, apathetic, libertarian point of view than cutting to the core of a problem. I would say the best example of sharp tongued dialogue all about decoding race and relationships, look at Dear White People (the movie or show)

I just stumbled across this video because I just got done watching Bodied for the second time in like, a month. I still love this film, but I really dig your perspective. Subscribed.
Have you seen Joseph Kahn's other films Torque and Detention?

Setting aside the specifics of this film (which I haven't seen), the two approaches both have relevance and purpose. Like any critical theory, each approach may be applied to yield good things. They provide a consistent perspective from which to examine the material. In any given case, the application of a particular approach may not be terribly interesting, in which case you should feel free to discard it. So consider authorial intent. Or don't. Or do and then don't. The more approaches you take to the material, the more you'll discover what may be useful or relevant to a particular topic or discussion.

As a white battle rapper this movie left a really bad taste in my mouth. Thank you for helping me understand why

Movie sucked and was corny af. I was hoping for a good dark comedy drama that showcased how incredibly talented battle rappers are. This movie makes me wish a better director and writer tackled a battle rap movie with the same cast. Movie doesn't let the audience think or feel for themselves, if that makes any sense.
