  • Krzysztof Penderecki's opera "Paradise Lost," one of the largest musical efforts of the last half-century.
The audience, many of whom expected to hear music of dissonant, grating sounds, interspersed with violent screams from the chorus, was surprised to hear music of vivid imagination, but music that did not violate their ideas of great choral and orchestral textures.

I remember attending the performance by the Stuttgart State Opera Comapny at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich, in 1979, Janos Kulka conducting the German Language version. It took place during the Bavarian State Opera Festival (Opernfestspiele) in July; it was one of the first operas I attended in that splendid house since my arrival in Munich in May of that year. Penderecki was present, and took a curtain call at the end - ovations.

I've just sat here for the last eight minutes feeling terror in my bones. A whole new kind of terror, a new vision of the matters addressed by the opera and Milton's book. Enlightened and scared to death, that's how I feel. Thank you for bringing this piece and its author to my attention. The drawing is what particularly overpowered me while listening. Do you know what it is and the name of the artist?

Based on the link to the article in the OP's description, I take this to be the world premier. The cast in that production was:
    John Milton, speaker: Arnold Moss
    Adam, baritone: William Stone
    Eve, soprano: Ellen Shade
    Satan, bass-baritone: Peter Van Ginkel
    Beelzebub, tenor: Michael Ballam
    Moloch, baritone: William Powers
    Belial, tenor: Melvin Lowrey
    Mammon, baritone: Edward Huls
    Death, countertenor: Paul Esswood
    Sin, mezzo-soprano: Joy Davidson
    Zephon, soprano: Susan Brummell
    Ithuriel: John Patrick Thomas
    Gabriel, tenor: James Schwisow
    Raphael: Dale Terbeek
    Messias, baritone: Alan Opie
    Michael, tenor: Frank Little
Voices of God: John Brandstetter, David Howell, Edward Huls, Daniel McConnell, William Mitchell

This is the world premiere, broadcast by radio station WFMT in Chicago, from Lyric Opera Chicago's performance. Eventually then General Manager Carol Fox (largely a rather Italianate ogress) had the production taken to the Vatican to perform for the Pope. The entire endeavor contributed to the near-bankruptcy of Lyric Opera, until Carol Fox's successor, Ardis Krainik, performed miracles and brought the company back to the black financially and creatively moved it forward. This opera could be revised and adapted (as was Barber's "Antony and Cleopatra") to render it more palatable for audiences, and to herald its potential inclusion into standard international repertoire.. To me, it's a disgrace that this opera is not performed (I am unaware of performances after those for its world premiere in Chicago in 1978).

Performance is immaculate, the mixing is sadly really choppy. Sometimes the vocals come through crystal clear, sometimes its absolutely lost in audio mud. :/

The plot deals with the fall of man, the triumph of Satan and the promise of salvation through the Messiah. Milton introduces the scene and takes us to the creation of Adam, his fall through disobedience, and the loss of Eden. Satan and his angels enter at various times, inflicting on the world conflict, war, and strife. After a brief encounter with Death and Satan, we journey through the chaos of Hell. A quick return to Eden fins Adam and Eve tending the birds and the beasts. Satan, dismayed by their happiness, approaches Eve as she sleeps and plants in her mind the first seeds of disobedience. Gabriel and his angels drive Satan Away, while God sends Raphael to warn Adam of Satan's message to Eve.
In Act 2, Eve strolls through Eden alone. Satan, seizing this opportune moment, tells her not to be afraid, but to eat of the fruit of the forbidden tree, for"you will not die, but will know both good and evil." She eats, and heightened as with wine, she dances wildly. Adam joins her and together they dance until they fall asleep from exhaustion. God's voice is heard asking where can be found one who can pay the price of death for man's disobedience. Christ is heard offering to pay the price. Adam and Eve hide as God approaches them. In the background, Satan and his host can be heard rejoicing in their victory over God's prize creation. The Angel Michael shows Adam two visions of the effects of his original sin: Cain killing Abel, and the warring of nations. With deep repentance, Adam and Eve are led out of Eden, but rejoice in God's promise to be with them in spite of their sin.
