Lotus Cortina chasing a Porsche GT3 at Goodwood

Clearly the GT3 is a much faster car but on this occasion our little Lotus put on an outstanding performance. Love being the underdog... Only had the chance to chase it for a couple of laps which was frustrating but lots of fun and very satisfying none the less.

I can recall in their day when the Mk I Cortina would lead Porsche and Minis driven by very high quality drivers at places like Brands Hatch.

Let's not fool ourselves, if this was a real race and the GT3 had a driver that knew how to corner, the GT3 would not have been seen again after the first few seconds of the video.

lets not fool ourselves, your full of it, and the Lotus Cortina was made to compete and beat Jag Mark II's in the touring car championships with excessive light weight performance in a small package
the GT3 is an overpriced, over engineered piece of junk that aint worth the cash you need to flash to drive it,
and with modern tires, and a good motor under its bonnet, a proper cosworth V8 or something along those lines
that GT3 is going back to deutchland uber allis to answer to the furher about why he sucks at his job

I had the feeling that the Cortina could have pulled a fifth gear. But there's probably no chasing a GT3 on a straight.

I'm curious to know the spec of this lc----clearly striped out but whilst the gt3 is obviously quicker on the straight the corners seem to be a great leveler great watch though and I say that as someone who's dream car is a gt3 of any incarnation from 996 to 992 😊

IMHO a change to a longer top gear would probably pay dividends. As another respondent said, it could, legality aside, manage a five speed box. Nice car, have fun :)

I think it did have 5 gears, you can see, close to the end of the video. And those Lotus engines like to rev, it's probably just nicely in its power band on those straights.

Really. There's only so much you can do to a normally aspirated 4 pot. As the 1.6 ltr Lotus was built with a close ratio 4 spd box with a tall first and 3.9 diff it will redline in top, in standard trim.

Yeah but to be fair the cortina needs two more gears to be competitive,because there’s nothing wrong with the corner speed,just not too great on the straights

Far too short and but for the lengthy straights you were all over the Porsche in the corners. Terrific driving in a fine race car, an engrossing watch start to a far too rapid conclusion.

That's a very tidy drive by the LC. Porsche driver was untidy in comparison and reliant on power over finesse.
