    This is very good advice, the problem is finding someone to carry out a fitting like this without first having to wade through all the crud out there. It's the same with just lessons, I have had some truly awful golf lessons and it took me quite a while to find someone decent.

    Great vid. A couple years ago two mates and I hit the city and went for a driver fitting. The bloke took one look at our swings and said "I CAN fit you into a driver, but really you should have a look at how you're swinging your current one" and proceeded to give us all a lesson using trackman and video for the next 1.5 hrs. Good on him as it helped us more in the long run I'm sure.

    Totally agree with Mark, I do custom fittings myself and a lot of people look at total distance... To many people also I find come in close minded, and are not willing to try other things, so important to have flexibility when buying new clubs because it is a big investment!! Great vid again mark, keep the quality of content up!! 🤓

    I think you forgot to mention the most important part of a custom fitting Mark. The shaft flex! How else are people on the internet going to know what a long dog I am, unless I tell them that I bought a 1.000 pound XXXXX stiff mega death shaft?!

    I spent the last 6 weeks on travel for work. I took the opportunity to shop for irons in the evenings. I saw every style of "Fitter" from just one step up from Used Car Salesman to a True Master Fitter that taught me a great deal about my swing as he "Fitted". I think you are right on the mark (no pun intended) that a good fitting is a LESSON. :D

  • @BapelZieN
    @BapelZieN 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Haha i should have known this 2 weeks ago cuz that was when i got my custom fit.
    I'm a hard hitter with kinda low hpc (6,2) and even if every drive was above 127 mph i still conrolled it pretty good but i can say that i was a bit long hitting with every club that i tried out.
    He liked it and he called up one guy from Mizuno just to tell hem the he had a guy there that hit long like he never seen before from a "casual" golfer.
    I had an amazing time there and i'm proud with my new MP-5 irons with longer DG X100 shaft and the totally custom made JPX 850 driver.

  • @PkGam
    @PkGam 8 ปีที่แล้ว

    Such truth!
    I think a lot of people think that "getting fit" means "getting clubs designed for my swing that will fix unusable swing faults". But no club is going to fix a swing that slices the ball 50 yards in the woods or something. Plus a lot of people bought into the sales hype of "newer means longer and straighter". Shops and club manufacturers know people want distance and they know people like to think that there's a club that can magically fix their shots. So maybe what got people thinking that stuff about fitting are the sales tactics themselves. They gotta sell clubs to stay in business I guess, but it seems to be used in a misleading way at some places as realistically people will still get their two-six-twos sliced right in the woods no matter what club they get. Ha ha!

    Question Mark.
    Whenever I've been in for a fit or just to hit some clubs that I like the look of, I've hit off mats (which aren't always in great nick). If you're getting fit for irons, would hitting off grass give more accurate numbers for delivery of the clubface?
    I'm thinking deflection off a mat may skew the numbers slightly, but if you're hitting the ball first (as you should be) should this negate the mat vs grass debate?
    Do you think that most good fitters would give you the opportunity to road-test clubs out on the course first before committing to buy?

    I was fitted for my irons the old way with lie tape hitting off a board and face tape for strike.. Was a bit worried that the face tape would change the spin but went with it anyway. I ended up with Wilson CI11 irons which are perfect for me, not quite players clubs but a good mid range iron....and an excellent price point. Have thought about checking them again but i know that most of the my bad shots are me not the clubs...

  • @darrenclack1119

    I've been looking into a new set of irons for a few months now. I've had 3 custom fit sessions. One at a well known golf chain, one at shop attached to a driving range and one at a brands fitting day. was recommended different clubs,spec, shafts on every one. I have lessons with a launch monitor so have a good idea of my strike relative to numbers. So as much as I'm an advocate of custom fitting for any handicap. The skill level, preference and knowledge of the fitter can be just as varying as an inconsistent swing.

    I went for a fitting at what was supposed to be the best club fitters in Northern CA. Hagin Oaks golf course. A 4 hour round trip for me. I settled on some Taylor Made irons and a shaft that really felt great. I left my down payment and waited for the clubs. A week later I get an email notification that I can't get those shafts with those irons. What a waste of over 5 hours of my time. They wanted to keep my deposit and give me store credit. Of course I told them no and asked for my deposit and money that I paid for the fitting. I really can't find someone I trust now. My clubs are about 9 years old and my swing has changed. I'm just ranting. It's so frustrating.

    I think more golfers should focus on hitting the ball straighter and eliminating one side of the course when they go get fit. Too often golfers are just trying to squeeze out more distance and forget golf is a game of precision and managing your mishits.

    Good info. I've been playing for 3 years and my bag is a mish mosh of a few old irons of same make, a blades tour 7, callaway 6, and a 5 ap titelist. 4h, 3h and a driver. Common sense told me to get good w those before I threw in for a custom fit set and me thinks next season is time. People always say your bag looks crazy but I say it's the player not the clubs so interested to see if an upgrade helps. Breaking 80 is my new goal. Should I still buy a used set and get them tailored or go all in on a brand new all me set?

  • @nmitch73able

    like the response to club length. I am 6 foot but gc2 GMT showed my clubs +2 deg and 1/2 inch long were still being delivered 4 degrees upright. I have relatively short arms (don't like spending) and long legs. static wrist to floor measurement for me is the same as average 6'4 person. fitter gave me heavier 1 inch longer clubs with much heavier clubs and it is really working for me. to make things worse previous coach who apparently coached jr mark back in Devon is hogan obsessed and wanted me much flatter in my swing. I won't now do a lesson with someone whose teaching is a camera, a system and some red lines.

    Some shops use impact tape. But if you put impact tape on in the absense of HMT to see strike location does that affect the shot? It has to, surely? Changing the surface of the clubface must affect energy transfer and spin?

    Hi Mark what do you think of the Mizuno DNA fitting system? I thought it was quite interesting when I used it. I would think its a great tool to use on the typical "Mr I need X flex" lol, nice to have something showing different numbers from the swing/shaft.

    • @legend9018
      @legend9018 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used the Mizuno Shaftfit Optimizer. I'm not sure if it's the same thing but it gave me very good and specific results. The trick is getting the fitter to follow those numbers and not have them try and sell you something off the rack. Even if the recommendation is the stock shaft hard or soft stepped don't let them try and convince it won't make a difference. I was very polite during my fitting and paid close attention to the findings that popped up on the screen after the session was over and went with the #1 recommendation. Of course the set he tried to sell me was a shaft that wasn't even in the top 10! It was however a very pricey graphite shafted set, what a surprise.

    Don't get stuck in the latest thing out carousel. If your clubs are way out of spec that's one thing, but if you like them their probably close and can be tweaked overtime. I got destroyed by a 75 year old dude playing 1980s ben hogan blades. It was an awakening, I don't need new irons. I need more practice and some lessons. It was an honor to golf with that guy, I've never seen so many flushed 2 irons. He really opened my eyes, not just a commercial saying 3mph more ball speed!!! This guy used the tools he had to beat the course, because he was just that good. I could write a whole article on this guy, after one round.

  • @松田もしくろす
    @松田もしくろす 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    What if you already have a set of irons and after a few lessons (plus lots of practice) you feel maybe you are at a point where fitting might actually do some good, or at least prevent you from getting into some bad habits. Since the set you have is purportedly good, then isn’t it just a matter of shaft, shaft length, lie angle, and maybe grips? As a beginner, at what point does it make sense to even get fitted? Is it possible that a good set of clubs, made from a famous maker, might actually not be good for your own personal swing characteristics? And I don’t mean a measly few yards difference, I mean severe hooking or other bad ball flight manifestation.

    The amount of custom fits that i do for people that turn into lessons is staggering, Strike is king like mark is saying. If you are striking it all over the face (in particular driver) there is no point in spending £300+ on a new driver. £300 worth of lessons with a good teacher will improve peoples golf 10 fold as opposed to buying the latest equipment.

    • @priayief
      @priayief 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Anthony Dempsey ... I agree. BUT, finding a good teacher is the biggest challenge. For me, I wouldn't go to a teaching pro unless he/she uses and understands and can explain the numbers. I've got to see results in order to have faith the advice I'm given. And, as far as lessons go, it doesn't do anyone any good to take a 1 hour lesson and think they'll improve. They won't unless the pro tells them the truth ... practice for at least 5 hours for each 1 hour lesson and don't bother coming back until you've completed that 5 hours of practice. Good luck with that!.

    Don't like that you think that the need for shorter clubs has something to do with the skill of a player. Actually it is the other way around. If you have the right length of clubs (depending on length of the arms, body and so on) you can hit the ball better.

  • @combobulate8114

    Trackman falls down against HMT for strike measurement, as high toe hits on TM will generally show higher smash than centre hits. Use tape or spray if you can't get on HMT (king of launch monitors imo)

    • @TomCooke1512
      @TomCooke1512 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also higher spin loft deliveries or large difference between face and path will result in a lower smash factor even if they're struck out of the middle. I agree HMT seems more suited to custom fits and coaching.

    • @TomCooke1512
      @TomCooke1512 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      A few mm towards the toe will show higher smash factor on any launch monitor because it is usually a more efficient place to strike it from. Not sure if that's what you meant or if you mean only Trackman would show it.

    Excellent video as usual Mark and your heart is in the right place however across the pond here in the states this is a sales driven industry. Regardless if it's a golf only specialty retailer or big box general sports store it's been my experience that the staff want to sell either what they have in stock or the most expensive set. I went for an iron fitting to 3 different retailers and after going through the whole process each time all 3 fitters ignored the shaft and lie recommendations and tried to sell me an off the shelf set. Having worked in the industry and playing off 6 I politely told them I'd have to think about the purchase and left the store. Using the data they collected I ordered my custom set online but had I not known I probably would've gone with the fitters recommendation. Hopefully videos like yours will continue to educate and inform.

    I cannot get custom fit. Like my pings I bought 7 years ago,l it would have cost more than I paid for the clubs, just to get custom fit for them, and that does not include the price of the clubs. So unless you are loaded with more money than you can spend, then rest of us, the average golfer cannot afford to get custom fit. Custom fitting was about $100 per club, X's 14. No way. I paid over $1500 for the full set, and would end up paying about $1400 or more EXTRA just to have them custom fit??? I spent all I had just to buy the clubs.

    • @legend9018
      @legend9018 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a shame, I can tell you that things have changed since then, at least here in the US they have. Many places don't charge for a fitting and if they do they subtract the fee from the irons. Mizuno is a particularly good manufacturer because they don't charge anything for shaft or grip upgrades and the most of the other manufacturers have a lot available options for no upcharge as well. Don't give up, if you are a solid player you will see a difference. The shaft is the engine of the club it must suit your tempo, delivery, speed etc.

    • @Leldofnfle
      @Leldofnfle 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anyone below 25 handicap should get fit for irons or any other club. Getting fit just picks the perfect club for you and your style of play, therefore getting custom fit benefits basically anyone with a consistent swing. Custom fitting makes you play much better than if you just go into a golf shop and buy the first golf club you see.

    • @seanregnier8418
      @seanregnier8418 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've learned a lot from Mark and I am guessing he would say that a lesson and a fitting should occur simultaneously. And handicap may not be the best indicator of how a fitting would go. A high handicap may strike their driver and irons very well, and just not do so well around the greens or something. I don't see why handicap would effect the need for a fitting., however I do understand the question. If someone has a very high handicap and is going through a dozen golf balls a round and shanking the ball constantly they probably aren't buying brand new clubs. Lots of shops will lengthen a set of used irons which may be a good start.

    • @legend9018
      @legend9018 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Jeff The mexican I agree, you should be able to legitimately shoot at or around 90 before getting fit. Hitting the ball all over the face and fat and thin on every other swing will not help the fitter get proper shaft or lie recommendations.

    • @Itachikeyser99
      @Itachikeyser99 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      At the end of the day you can't buy yourself a game. It may help some high handicappers but the club cannot hit it for you and it won't make a lick of difference if you can't hit it with at least some consistency.

That is the typical way, most golfers will buy the wrong equipment. Yes - many people have swing faults, over the top etc - but most golfers don´t have any big ambitions and don´t want to practice and as soon the have left the range and on the first 1 they again swing the same way, and standing with a driver not optimized.
    So, unless it is a complete beginner, that have not yet developed any real swing, I would prefer if I got optimized for my swing. If I swing like Cra** - then yes, this is how it is. But I want to get this maybe 18 degree driver then to get my balls flying higher

    If your Custom Fitter sends away for your clubs to be built then you have just been Shafted.
    A true Custom fit by a Custom Clubmaker he or she will collect all of the data then build a demo club for you try before fine tuning it, Then and only then go onto build a full set of clubs which are M.O.I matched. Well that is what I do. Kind regards.
