    I always liked Tears for Fears but after re-visiting their music and getting all their albums after finally seeing them in concert few months ago they've become one of my favorite music groups ever. Love Roland's voice and they're so talented!

    Even after they broke up after "Seeds of Love", I was into Roland. "Elemental "was great and I LOVED "Raoul and the kings of Spain" in which he explored his roots which I share with him being half Spanish even though it tanked. And their reunion was...wait for it...LEGENDARY !

    Elemental was taken from the 4th TFF album 'Elemental',and the first of two albums without Curt Smith. Underrated gem from Roland & his alternate TFF collaborators. Gail Ann Dorsey is featured on bass in the video but didn't play on the record,although she was a part of the touring live group.

    Woman in Chains has two legendary drummers. The first is Manu Katche and then towards the end, Phil Collins (yes that Phil Collins!!) takes over to close the song out.

    Woman in Chains: When I first heard this, it sounded plain compared to their other songs, but something about the message stuck with me. As I heard it again, I began to love it and the intricate subtle details in the song. The more you listen to it, the more beautiful it gets. I later began to love it as it helped me realize the personal prison I was in. I can't listen without crying 😢😢😢

    Great reaction. Nice to watch someone really get it. Woman in Chains is simply perfect. Possibly the best song ever recorded. I know that sounds dramatic, but seriously, it's perfect. No other song makes my eyes wet every single time I hear it - especially with the video (maybe because I grew up in that story?). TFF is underrated because most people just think they're "one of those cool 80's bands" that everybody likes. Nah, top 5 bands ever. Not a gimmick. They're in the same league as monsters like Pink Floyd and Zep. Their songs are complex, epic, filled with emotion, compositional masterpieces, and on and on. Even something like Shout that just sounds like electronica on the surface - really listen to it - layers and layers. I could go on....

    TFF are just amazing ! From the early days, Pale Shelter shows the rawness and angst of their music to their latest music The Working Hour, they have become world class musicians and sound BLOODY FANTASTIC! But i really love the album THE HURTING in 1983 i played that album a million times because of the rawness and angst in their music, Love it... Thanks

      The Hurting is magnificent teen angst fodder. And I mean that in the nicest possible way - the boys being barely out of their teens themselves when they wrote this (it being an early demo). This 12 yo had The Hurting on repeat and I still love it.

    Spot on with your assessment on Pale Shelter & Woman in Chains. Working Hour was a live favourite and not a single,hence no video, although there's a live version on their video 'Scenes From the Big Chair' which features live performances, interviews & music videos.

    You were absolutely spot on with the meaning of the Working Hour. "Paid by those who learn by our mistakes" is a reference to how the record company was pushing them to release singles and albums. And I think everyone knows that TfF do not rush their albums, they are perfectionists, and so take longer to produce the genious that is Tears For Fears.

  • @RandomJane104
    @RandomJane104 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Wow! You absolutely nailed the Woman in Chains meaning. Most people take it at face value as being about abusive relationships and it is...but I once heard Roland say in an interview that it was also about allowing men to express their softer sides.
    Also yes, the Pale Shelter relationship is Parent and child. A lot of their early music was about teenage angst.

    So glad you did Woman in Chains. Such a beautiful, beautiful song. So powerful. I get choked up when I listen to it. Oleta Adams has a remarkable voice, and she's a superb piano player too. You should watch the live video of Tears for Fears with Oleta Adams performing Badman's Song. She was a member of the band for that Seeds of Love album. She appear on about half the songs and she toured with them. There's a live version of Woman in Chains with Oleta as well that is marvelous. And really happy you did The Working Hour even though it didn't have a video. It's one of my favorite songs of theirs.

  • @221b-Maker-Street
    @221b-Maker-Street ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oooh fabulous, PMD - you're doing TFF - absolutely _love_ this band. 🖤 Roland's an astonishing songwriter (his hair went from strength to strength too!). The rich, lush - yet often bleakly raw - textural layers in nearly all their work bears repeat listening. I'm thrilled a whole new audience is discovering them for the first time. Roland and Curt were a delicious combination in the early 80s - their more recent live sessions a testament to their longevity and enduring appeal.
    For some reason, while neither is known for collaborating, I've always wondered what a creative alliance between TFF and the divine Kate Bush would sound like... 🖤

    • @221b-Maker-Street
      @221b-Maker-Street ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You're spot-on with the toxic masculinity aspect of Woman In Chains. Roland grew up in a home where his father was controlling and abusive towards his mother, so WiC is partly inspired by her, but the insisting refrain _"So free them..."_ also refers to the (still, even now 🙄) expectation that men shouldn't recognise, nor express emotion. And the sheer havoc that such damaging beliefs wreak on people's lives.
      And yes, the build is almost, er... orgasmic in much of their music. I and for one am Here For It. 😬

    Woman in chains is so beautiful ! Roland and Curt could've been all over the place but they put Oleta up front and just riffed off her voice and made her the protagonist. If that's not elegance and engagement I don't know what is :)
