    Imo TTYD did the "Paper" gimmick better as it's used more as a visual thing rather than constantly being brought up or mentioned. The Paper abilities are disguised as Curses that help navigate throughout the game, solving puzzles sometimes make the room peel away the solutions or a bridge appear by flipping multiple pages. The modern games lean a lot more on Paper part as characters became a lot more aware that they're Paper and it becomes a running gag throughout the games.

  • @patroka
    @patroka 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +19

    Yeah, the point of people complaining about the paper gimmicks is because the problem isn’t just that the modern games have paper gimmicks. The problem is that the modern games ARE paper gimmicks.
    Old Paper Mario was Mario Story, and the games were about epic fairy tale quirky stories. Modern Paper Mario is Paper Mario, and the games are about arts and crafts gimmicks.
    I personally absolutely agree with the old guard after playing this game, which I didn’t really expect to. It has this unrestrained freedom to it, a spirit of creativity that is only half-there in the new games. And I also really appreciated going back to GameCube video game design for a while (like, I loved the Pianta ‘I love you’ joke, it’s so audacious. But, I did hate the mild backtracking as well)

  • @FenexTheFox
    @FenexTheFox 21 วันที่ผ่านมา +9

    As someone who is only now starting to become a Paper Mario fan, the "old Paper Mario wasn't paper gimmicks" question is a complex one, and has nothing to do with quantity of paper-related mechanics.
    In TTYD, they never, and I mean NEVER explicitly acknowledge themselves as made of paper. The black chests describe the curses like, "you become a paper airplane", "you become a paper boat", "you become thin as paper", never seeming to imply you were paper to begin with. When standing near the captured Toads as a boat in chapter 5, one of them says "it's made of paper..." as if that's an irregular thing. All of these combined make it clear that the paper thing is merely an art style. An abstraction.
    Most games I know that have a similar arts & crafts art style do the same thing (Yoshi's Wooly World, Yoshi's Crafted World, Tearaway), or at least give a coherent explanation to why the world is the way it is (Kirby's Epic Yarn, LittleBigPlanet)
    Modern Paper Mario though, that becomes a THING. A truth. The way this world works. Everyone is aware of it. While also never giving any details of why it's like that. It breaks the integrity of the world. Makes you ask all kinds of weird questions. "How do clothes work? Do beings in this world live in constant fear from being so fragile? Are the houses made of them, or are they made of house? They scream, for they do not know."

      Frankie is basically the epitome of “what we do for the sake of love”, and this scene in particular is hilarious because of the irony that he HAS to say “I love you” so repetitiously that it borderlines on tedious work to express his love.

    For reference the backtracking was always the most hated part of ttyd and often the most regurgitated counterpoint to it being a good game (Id argue if a game has 1 major problem its still an excellent game nothing in this world is perfect). But the remake did a lot to try to mitigate it. The warp zone area was a lot less robust and only had 4 pipes in the original to petalburg, boggly tree, keelhaul key and poshley heights. This made the general white quest miserable. So having the warps for every world and having them literally next toeachother is amazing. For chapter 4 they added the shortcut pipe between the steeple and twilight town. For chapter 5 they added the spring you see at 7:40 that spring alone makes walking back and forth the 3 screens in keelhaul key much easier than zigzaging that one room. Tbf those were the only times the backtracking was terrible in the original and they addressed each one in some way in the remake so I call that a win. But yeah chapter 5 should of jsut did a pipe between both ends of keelhaul key.

    Honestly man, thanks for being reasonable and actually giving the game a chance. Whenever I see people saying that TTYD is "overrated" it always pains me because, while it DOES have a couple of flaws (let's be frank here, no game in the franchise is perfect, classic or modern), I feel like calling it "overrated" just because of those couple of flaws just criminally downplays how _genuinely_ good the game is (and some of those flaws, like the backtracking, were also fixed or at least mitigated in the remake).
    In fact, while we're at it, I absolutely despise how some people decide to not play TTYD just because some of its fans act pretty toxic. I won't even sugarcoat it, the Paper Mario fandom can be absolutely hellish on both sides (and not just the classic part since some modern fanboys can also be utter douchebags), but I do not, nor will I ever understand that perspective of "the community surrounding X game can be toxic, therefore I won't play X game". If I were to make an analogy, it's like if I said that because the Sonic fandom is toxic, I wouldn't play any of the Sonic game. A community having toxic people doesn't make a game good or bad.
    Also, a quick clarification, when people say that the modern Paper Mario games have "paper gimmicks", I think they're moreso referring to the fact that the characters frequently make jokes about and are aware of the fact of the fact that they and the world they're in are made out of paper, which can feel a bit more over the top, a bit too "in-your-face" if you will, compared to the classic games.
    All in all, great review. Keep up the good shit my guy.

  • @NunnyNugget
    @NunnyNugget 22 วันที่ผ่านมา +4

    Honestly, I loved TTYD so much after finally being able to play it. I will say however, it did put into perspective for me how overblown I think the hate was against Origami King, which is the other one I played. Like, Origami king had so many damn awesome moments - I think it really is a great game, and even though after playing TTYD I will 100% say it's the better game overall imo, I also think that people calling TOK an actually bad game prrrobably didn't play it or give it a fair chance.
    Yea, I get that it's for sure not perfect - after finally playing TTYD I SO badly want the return of partners, the way more fun and diverse battle system with the upgrades, choices, badges, variety of strategies, the way more colourful and diverse cast of characters and the stories being more adventurous.... however, I think OK actually wasn't that far from being the best game in the series - granted these are some VERY big missed opportunities which hold it back and imo allow TTYD to take the throne easily, but OK had a lot of qualities!
    I think TOK had a much more vast sense of exploration, with each area being huge and sprawling compared to TTYD where you really feel the limitations of the system it's built on - I wouldn't have minded having more valuable rewards for exploring like the Badges, but with the inclusion of those running around the vast and colourful areas of OK would be far more enjoyable imo
    Origami King also features, if my memory hasn't failed me, basically no backtracking. I appreciate in some instances like Chatper 4, having you walk back through the forest by yourself was done for dramatic effect to allow you to get used to what had just happened to mario and the loneliness, but Chapter 5 took it way too far imo the world just felt boring and small, and that they had to drag out the amount of time you spent in the area to make up for it not really having anything of value in. Whereas in TOK, there is such a huge variety of things to do in every place, so much to see and new things to do at every part, and if they do send you back on fetch quests I sure don't remember it, so it does a good job in my eyes!
    Also, might be a bit of a hot take but, although I know everyone hated on the Legion of Stationary... I low key loved them? Like, okay yes we don't have any villains who have quite as much presence in their chapter as Doopliss does being such a scary and direct threat, or recurring villains such as Lord Crump or da Shadow Sisters, but I feel like most of them had such a cool buildup and very grand personalities. Like unironically a fucking Hole Puncher is one of my favourite villains in Paper Mario because they gave it so much build up with the faceless toads, realisiation of it being responsible for the missing sun, and trying out the music discs untill it steals the stage mid dance number, boasting one of the coolest mechanics for a boss fight... yea, I get it, I wish it had an actual character design I could latch onto since yeah I'm not gonna be going crazy drawing fanart of a yellow hole punch but like, I still love the character and what they did with it, in a weird way you kind of couldn't get the same effect coming from something that wasn't a Hole Punch? Or at least, you'd need a character USING a hole punch.
    I'm 100% in support of future mario games becoming more like TTYD... I just don't want people to completely write off OK because damn it, it's such a fun game and has so much to remember about it. My rambling is bad enough so I barely scratched the surface of what I love about it, but I think people should honestly give it a chance asw and I am praying that the next installment takes the best parts of TTYD while still having the charm and cherry picks the amazing elements that TOK had!!

      @Caleb_Bravo99  22 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

      I think part of the reason people would say that the newer games are bad are just because they never expected Nintendo to actually give them what they wanted. I hope now that TTYD has been remade, that people can go back to the previous entries with more of an open mind. Origami King probably has the best areas in the series.

    I think that it’s just been too long. Because paper Mario sequels aren’t really sequels at all but rather completely different experiences, people who liked this style of game had nothing for 20 years. Of course they went insane XD. The modern games don’t have much or sometimes any of what is enjoyable here. They have different enjoyable stuff, but that’s like… hmm. Alright you love Mario kart, like it’s your favourite game ever. And then all the sudden Mario kart 4 is a game about delivering pizza. With the exception of driving everything else is so wildly different that it’s hard to call it a real sequel. And then they just keep on making pizza delivery games getting entirely new fans while abandoning the old. Of course that causes conflict XD. That’s not generally how sequels work. You build, improve, and innovate.Not replace,remove, and innovate. The new stuff is always kinda nice but if you leave all the old behind you no longer are really making a sequel are you? Anyway that’s my take I mean the fact that fans can be split between modern and classic, with not minor stuff being the difference between the two fans but rather basic game design groundwork being the thing that changes. Of course at this point the fans are at odds, Nintendo basically divided everyone themselves.

    A modern PM fan criticizing the game for not being ‘that interesting’ is a wild take.
    Like my guy, Modern PM is that but either just more cryptic or too gimmicky. If you’re gonna throw stones, don’t do it in a glass house.
    My biggest beef with TTYD is actually how it is a precursor for later map design. It’s flat with barely any dimension to move through. PM64 has so many dynamic camera movements, that really make it hard for me to defend TTYD and it’s backtracking.
    Also just think the combat in PM64 is more give and take with engagement. No super guards, one health bar to manage. It feels the most strategic of them all, and really only goes down from there.
    But no. I do not value the words of a Modern PM player weighing in on the ACTUAL PM experience they’re not a part of. Modern PM is dead to me. And I fail to see any of its virtues as a series beyond taking what was known, and twisting it into something it isn’t.

    I remember playing the original game in 2019 and I did not understand why so many men with neckbeards and fedoras and Elton John glasses would foam at the mouths over it because for me, the problems with the back tracking had outweighed the good shit.
    When I played the remake just recently, most of the backtracking except for the Trouble Center was streamlined to the point of the bad shit being on even plane with the good shit. But I wish that they had done more with the remake in general.
    If the remake’s character art style was a fusion between the art style from the original game and the character consistency from Paper Mario: The Origami King, then I could have bought the idea of Mario, Luigi, Peach, Bowser and Toadsworth being pushed outside of their comfort zone in an ancient shit hole akin to the city of Rome full of a more colourful cast of characters than in the Mushroom Kingdom much more than I did initially.
    And the same can be said for the cinematography in various cutscenes. To their credit, it gets better by the third act, but I think that the important scenes like Vivian talking to Mario about her being bullied by her sisters for being a woman and Bobbery reading his wife’s letter, should have had the same finesse that The Origami King had with its important cutscenes to forward in the message of the game being an evocation of friendship and diversity.
