Hi,
I just want to see some working class members of society on this show. It’s a class of society that is consistently missing from the dialogue .
I’m talking about hearing from the wide ranging members of the working class ( races , sexualities, genders etc. ) and hearing what their experiences are on the ground level .
Thanks so much for what you wrote , I absolutely agree.
I was bought up middle class but as an adult I’ve been working class. I have spoken to many working class people who have a depth of knowledge on philosophy, politics and society. But who also have a distinct real love for other people and are uniquely savvy about life at a grassroots level .
Yet they remain unheard , unseen and are seemingly unwanted from many forms of media, political debate , government and the public dialogue.
Please , can you consider having some real working class members of society on your show Owen??
This show is such a great outlier in many ways from the mainstream media , but like most other media platforms the working class are absent.
I believe that socialism is for the benefit of all people’s , and since much of it’s roots are from the working class I feel they should be represented on podcasts such as yours .

I really love how Abi is actually moving the conversation about trans rights in the UK forwards, we've been distracted into defending ourselves when we should be asking for better healthcare, marriage, and adoption rights.
Trans should not be able to adopt because they have no grasp on reality.

It's really sweet because it's like the wholesome version of when confused transphobes tell trans women "you'll never be a man!" or trans men "you'll never be a woman!" :D (though admittedly I do find those confused transphobic remarks hilarious too xD)

Why do you think they would be saying they are "trans" in the first place, if they weren't the opposite sex to begin with??? Seeing the joy on Abigail's face in her Identity video made me realise how miserable I was in the closet, and helped me find the courage within myself to come out as nonbinary shortly after. Still, I knew that my reception wouldn't be as positive as hers. As a fat person, hearing her cite thin privilege as one reason why things are going so well for her makes me appreciate her even more; even if she can't understand my position fully, she acknowledges that it exists and matters. I feel seen.

My mum makes a real effort to empathise with the trans community but Abby is the first person she’s already known, trusted, understood, cared about the mental health of, listened to the opinions of and desperately wants to be okay and not suicidal and the change in her going from trying to understand to actually advocating for people in our community has been such a blessing. I couldn’t have helped her to see. She had to actually see. We love Abigail in my house!

@@ambientjohnny why the focus on trans women? You realise trans men can use men's toilets too? Gender identity is more than just stereotypes. You can be a trans women without being ultra feminine, just as you can be a cis woman without being particularly feminine. Same applies in reverse go trans and cis men. Gender expression and identity are different.
@@LiamMacLeanMusic Because it's about males invading single-sex spaces reserved for females and the safety/dignity/respecting female boundaries and the historical struggles females have had to go through to gain more equal footing with males. Females in male spaces pose no potential threat to males as males do in female spaces, PLUS, there have already been dozens upon dozens of incidents with "self-ID" males in single-sex spaces reserved for females. Allowing males to "identify" into female-only spaces erases female rights and protections. That's why.
You have done nothing to explain how anyone comes to the conclusion that they are "trans" based on anything else than what sexist stereotypes are associated with each sex. If it isn't about stereotypes, then why does a man feel the need to "transition" if it doesn't actually matter what he looks or feels like, what's wrong with simply being a gender non-conforming male? What precisely "makes" a male a "woman"??? How can he tell??? Provide examples of what this knowledge is based on beyond sexist stereotypes. What are these "womanly feelings" that only women can have? What is the behaviour that only women can display? There must be concrete things, which you can mention, which aren't simply sexist stereotypes, if "gender identity" is based on something other than sexist stereotypes. Funny how not one single TRA has come up with anything yet, you just say "it isn't the same" while failing to elaborate, and if you can't explain how then you simply cannot claim they are different.
If you're not charmed by Abi's reaction to the phrase "great TH-camrs of our time", then you are dead inside.
I think Abi is the first trans person I've ever heard express the pure elation of coming out as trans and the positive impact its had on her life. The right wing love to talk about how depressed all trans people are and their very high suicide rates without ever acknowledging why that is. It's the right wing that causes that distress

@@remotefaith if it was the gender dysphoria, it could be eased by transitioning, both socially and medically. it's the people who actively stand in the way of those things that do the killing, the laws and slurs are just tools. It's the person who kills, not the gun.

@@remotefaith Gender dysphoria definitely sucks, but getting on hormones and having people treat you like a human being certainly help make it painful. I'm definitely a thousand times happier after getting on hormones, and I have yet to meet a single trans person who wasn't happy with HRT.
It reminds me of GOP politicians saying that the reason they supported not certifying the 2020 election results was because so many of their constituents believed that there were problems with the election. But they fail to mention that their constituents believed in the "Big Lie" exactly because the politicians had been expressing doubts about the election results It's a circular reasoning at its finest.

Fantastic interview! I love Abi so much. (I also died laughing when she said that her trans friends were like, "Yeah. We know." Because that's exactly what happened when I came out as a lesbian. "How dare you not tell me! I could have saved years of internal gay panic!")
So much hate is born out of ignorance. The discrimination and unequal treatment trans people face every day is appalling, but a huge number of people have no idea. I'd hope everyone would be horrified if they knew.

I actually cried when I watched her coming out video. Between how perfectly she explained the experience of many trans people while still keeping everything framed in a positive light, along with seeing someone I had just discovered in my own journey to finally come to terms with and come out about being trans now come out themselves publicly just a few weeks after I did, in such a powerfulway...... just so many emotions at once!!
As a cis man, what got me was the character of Olly bowing out and Abi looking absolutely stunning as she walked in. Perfect use of Blackstar as well!
@@GeoNeilUK I had some whiplash, feeling as if I was mourning during a eulogy for "the man who wasn't there". Seeing Abi walk through that door made me think so much at once - how happy and confident she looked, the fact that "she" was always there and that the person I respected wasn't at all actually leaving, and yeah weaponized David Bowie is almost not fair lol.

Thank you so much Abi for talking about how difficult it can be to articulate your needs as a trans person to figures of authority. It took me 2.5 years to find and reach out to the right people who could help me with legally changing my name. If I didn't have the strength to push people in my government to give me answers, I wouldn't have gotten help.
I have been watching Philosophy Tube for over 4 years now. Thank you for this wonderfully well rounded interview. Every facet that Abi shares with us is inspirational and lovely. She really is a beautiful human.
I fully transitioned socially last July after secretly working on my transition for a couple years and being out to some close friends / family. When she came out, seeing how happy she was was awesome. I had just recently had that happiness for myself and I love seeing others experience it. It's such an immense weight lifted from your shoulders, you can stop pretending to be something you're not, you can drop the complicated double life you've been balancing and just be the honest, real version of yourself. It's so wonderful.

Never seen your stuff before Owen, but I really appreciated your interview style here. The way you just ask a thoughtful question and you gave Abi the space to answer fully without jumping in a lot is really great.
I'll never forget around 10 years ago volunteering in a prison and seeing a trans woman in the men's prison and feeling horrified she was there. She had come out whilst in prison and being transferred out but it was a shock to see her stuck there and at risk. It was the same era I had recently gone vegan and found out you couldn't have vegan food in prison and it was just such a bizzare feeling that you have to advocate for your rights in prison- a place most people hope to never go- and that the majority never have to even think of in that way.

Getting into Philosophy over the last year (in large part thanks to Abi) has been enormously beneficial to my relationship with myself and the world around me.
It's one of the greatest political tragedies in current UK society, how much transphobia and trans bigotry is crossing the political divide. I'm ashamed of some left of centre friends for their abhorrent views about trans people. Solidarity with Abigail and the trans community. ✊

I thought your question about the low number of people taking philosophy A Levels as compared to the near 1 million subscribers to be an interesting disconnect. I think making complex ideas relatable, and explaining their application in a contemporary setting has a lot to do with why her work is popular.
I love Abi's answer about what gives her cause for hope, I welled up a bit at the end.

@@leafleafleaf9272 For one thing, she wasn't even particularly comparing the black civil rights movement to trans rights - she was just using Audre Lorde's work as a jumping off point for discussion about identity theory and her own journey with gender identity.
But also, comments like these always seem to be coming from a place of "I see trans women as men playing dress up who don't actually have legitimate human rights issues they're fighting for, so I'm offended that they would dare show solidarity or speak to common points of struggle with other marginalized groups. Which is just... no.
Great segment, the conversation covered a lot about trans rights in Britain but also a lot about Abby specifically which is really nice.

Abi's decision making process of "could I be happy if I never did this again" is inspiring. I think this is what I subconsciously did when I made my last big career move, but I don't think I'm ever going to make decisions the same way again.

Hearing the story of the (well meaning yet ignorant) woman say to Abigail "So, you're transitioning into a man?" was so sweet, I audibly 'awwed'.
Really glad to hear Abigail has been interviewed by the BBC, too. It's so important we have people like her being a voice in mainstream media (to counter the likes of Rowling)
Also I'd like to suggest youtuber JammieDodger (he is a British trans man) for future interview ideas. He also made a really interesting and thoughtful response to the JK Rowling controversy. Samantha Lux (trans woman, I'm pretty sure she's from the US) made a very well researched video about trans athletes, too.
@@bigbinji6145 last time I checked, infertile women and intersex women are still women. You don't have to give back your woman card if you have a hysterectomy. Defining womanhood as identity surrounding the ability to give birth is inaccurate and often even excludes cis women
@@asparagus5428 Physical sex is a lot more complicated than a simple binary and the divide between man and woman if you're determining it by biological terms is a lot more fuzzy than you'd think.
@@asparagus5428 The belief sex is simple is because we often ignore the reality of biology, a simplification for time and ease's sake. Of course there's no third sex or gamete, but sex is by definition a bimodal distribution, not a binary. Trying to impose a strict social binary onto a bimodal spectrum is ridiculous because it excludes the divergent cases from the modes. Woman is a word we apply to one of those modes, but because there's no cut off when you're dealing with a spectrum, so it's more logical to treat it as a social class, rather than a technical biological term. Of course, most women possess a certain set of biological characteristics, but even ones you'd likely consider women don't always follow those rules. Trans people don't use the term woman as a technical biological term, we use it as a term to describe a social identity often attributed to those that have gestational reproductive organs, because that's the way people use the word woman in day to day life. When I say 'Oh, I met a lovely woman at the park today', I'm not telling you that I met a person with the potential to birth young, I'm telling you that I met a person who has a gender presentation that we would typically categorise as falling under the term woman.
@@asparagus5428 I mean if you really want me to dig up some academic articles on sex I can, but it doesn't change the fact that most people don't use woman as a technical term denoting sex, but as a social identity.

The Private Eye is mostly great, but I really, REALLY wish they'd lay off the tacit transphobia. They seem to be trying to stay neutral, under the misapprehension that one can be neutral on an issue that consists people who want to exist on one side and people who want those people not to exist on the other.
I'd love to see Abi interview Hislop. I don't have any expectation of seeing that happen, but it would be fascinating.
The correct neutral option will always be 'not my business, not my concern, and anyone who tries to make it their concern can go away'

I've recently discovered Philosophy Tube. Abi seems so much happier and relaxed after coming out; before there was a underlying frustrated angst to her old videos that I couldn't quite place.
I'm really glad that she is now able to be her real self.
Abi always speaks so honestly and eloquently about anything she puts her voice to. We love to see it.
Also, watching Owen shamelessly flirt with his guest is an intriguing angle to this series I certainly haven't noticed before!
This makes me so proud to live in New Zealand where the gender marker on your Passport is M (male) F (female), or X (gender diverse). Gender is your preference and no documentation is required. It's a bit harder to change your gender on your driver's licence though, you have to pay $38 and bring your passport with you.

This was such an interesting interview and had a great balance of optimism and realism about the state of the UK etc etc; something I did notice though is that Owen frequently said "cisgendered" which is just not the correct word (I feel like Abi tried to subtly correct him by saying "cisgender" herself but was too polite to bring it up lmao). Just thought I would mention as subtle language differences like this can of course be very important :)
Would you mind explaining a bit more? What would be the difference between using ‘cisgenderED’ and just ‘cisgender’? Are u just saying one is not grammatically correct?
@@mlxlmewq7733 It's grammatically incorrect. It also implies that the opposite is 'transgendered' which is also not correct and just kinda weird because being trans is something that someone *is*, not *becomes*, and 'transgendered' kinda implies the latter

16:30 - that's the thing about trans joy... No matter what is thrown at you as a consequence of transition, the joy, euphoria and sense of fulfillment that living as yourself provides makes it worth it. It also exposes being closeted as the futureless abject misery that it really is.
