I appreciate that didn't make the child into a twisted sociopath, she was ignorant from her parents teachings but when presented with the actual facts she immediately felt guilt. Good story for a side quest
The thing is that the first sidequests were quite useless to do as they didn't bring anything to the story But oh boy do I highly recommend to do the "Payback" quest. Hits you in the guts if you like Cid
when they introduced you to this area, they told you that the ppl there were really racist. Then you did the sidequests and it just opened your eyes to a new level of racism. They didn't treat bearer as a lesser human, but not a human at all.
Goes to show just how kind and good of a ruler Elwin really was, doesn't it? He was the only ruler who actually tried to improve the lives of Bearers and do away with the widespread prejudice against them. Elwin was trying to give Bearers a place where they could truly have a home, and where they would be treated as equals just like anyone else. And then Anabella ruined it all. But at least his ideals still live on in Clive, Joshua, Jill, and our band of outcasts & outlaws. I'm sure had they ever had a chance to meet, Elwin would have gotten along very well with Cid, and vice-versa.
This is how it looks like when gaming companies are not afraid to push boundaries. This is fucking incredible. Can we please get this back in western gaming as well?
I think the sadest part is at some point this girl asked why her chloe turned into a rock and her dad told her she was just too tired to do anything anymore. Dont worry ill get you another one conditioning her to think all her chloes are replacable instead of people.

I think it would've been better if the kid had died and the dad had survived, and Clive could've said 'You can always get another kid'. Clive is way too nice for this setting.

when I did this quest I was like "oh jeez another save my pet quest (as if FF7 Remake's cat quest wasn't annoying enough)" when the reveal happened I was like, oh damn... and it ended right away, its like yeah that's the quest lol

Dignity that would have kept her alive." Also Clive: "I'm just gonna... put her ashes in this jar. And scatter them over the ocean. Main Story Quests are the Lifeline of a Game. Side Story Quests are the Backbone. Never underestimate how good (or dark) Side Quests can be. They will constantly surprise you, even if they don't give good rewards. 😲😲😲
Don’t forget that right next to this quest is the “All Bark” quest. I just finished both of those quests and holy moly. It’s a really apt and potent way of conveying how hate is perpetuated from generation to generation.
Especially since the quest ends with the guy and his kid getting killed all cause the dad taught his kid how to be a privileged c*nt which he most likely learned from his parents and so on and so forth.
This girls reminds of a celestial dragon from one piece. They would treat their slave like this. Like an object that " breaks" they just get another one. The girl is young and is acting how she was taught. Upon the revelation thanks to clive , she becomes remorseful and less of the thankless attitude.
The father and son in the all bark side quest are the Celestial dragon characters. The father tricks you into “ helping” his son who is being “ attacked” by a wolf. When you kill the wolf the son get’s angry and tells you that the wolf was meant to kill you. You see the bodies of other branded who had tried to help and were killed. They both get what they deserve when their new wolf turns on them and kills them.
I've seen people shitting on the side quests in this game, including this quest. I mean I get it, some of them are pointless filler, like the one where you find dirt for the garden. But come on, there are definitely some good ones in there too, especially in this area.
i dont like the design mostly. i m just after the "pivotal point" in the story (~50% of the mainstory), so maybe it gets better now. But the overall design is "take quest" => "go to next area" => instant resolved after a quick fight or finding a dead body. I like the theme of the quests, but not how fast/shallow they are resolved. Whats getting on my nerve especially are the "find someone"-quests, in which you get to a dead body and conviniently someone arrives that buries the body for you. There are others, but mostly its along those lines and its even less compelling since the ingame rewards are really bad. So all its got going for itself are the dark themes. I would really like to have chained quests with a decent reward at the end that tell a coherent sidestory. For now all it does is setting the current area into context which itself is good. But as i said, the mechanical side is to shallow.

If you dont want to get distracted from the main story be my guest. But then the pacing of the main story should be on point (which is sadly not always the case). Some of the main story beats (pre and post timeskip) would have been awesome sidequests. The game is awesome in alot of ways. Sidequest design is not one of its strong points.
This game had some surprising scenes and outcomes. The amount of blood spilled was quite surprising to me. It's the first time I have ever seen that much blood in a FF game.
Let's see, the only other time there was a major amount of blood I can recall in the older games is 7 with the snake corpse. Most blood we'd get from FF since is Squall getting slashed in the face (FF8 intro). 14 is more and more doing whatever to get bloody while staying within the age rating, like painting the blood black in a particular scene in Endwalker.
I mean… I never played this game but it does seem basic, it took 5 minutes of talking to npcs, judging by the environment around tem he didn’t have to walk much at all

Love how the vouce actor put in just the right of tempered rage into his character's lines here. Its enough to let the audience know his anger towards such an atrocity, but held back by the fact that the girl herself didn't know any better til she was confronted by it.
This game’s side quests are unhinged, some of the early side quests are unhinged, some of the later side quests are also unhinged, but in different ways.
For the people who havent played this game, this girl turns out to be the nicest one in the family. At least she knows what she did was wrong, unlike her father and brother.

Quest 1: Can you gather some herbs? Quest 2: Can you slay some boars? Quest 3: Can you please acquire emotional scarring for life? Monsters are grown.. thaught.. created by experience.
Interestingly I think the music was a tip off for how dark some of the quests in the area were going to be. The moment Clive enters the Royal Meadows, the music turns to a more eerie/tense tone. Boy did it deliver on that too.
It's so weird people keep saying that the side quests are bad and not worth doing. So many of them have great stories and really flesh out the world. And the later ones really change how the world is. Don't skip the side quests
It's because (gameplaywise) they do not add to the game. They are just random encounters which you can already have while roaming the zones and then TP back. They do add substance to the world but some people already have enough with what they've seen for that or they fill in the blanks themselves.
I do really love that Clive isn't some generic moral highground hero. You just know, almost any other tripple A studio would have done some sh*t where the protagonist just forgives everyone for their racism and horrific actions. Our boy Clive got no issue with traumatising a child to put them on a better path.
“All Bark” and “Playthings” were the turning point for me. The side quests before this were largely low stake, and did not have as much of a bite to them. Until we reach these side quests, literally before the end of this part of the game. These quests were important from a story perspective because it shows the cruelty the Bearers face, whether intentional or not. A reality check to players that even though Clive has the power to fight back, other Bearers are not blessed by the Eikons. Where Clive can use his powers freely, for Bearers each use of their innate magic saps them of their life.
I like the side-quests so far, they are quite simple but pack a lot of world building in them, including some pretty dark stuff about how this world works.
It was really obvious she was talking about a branded from the start. They should have put her quest somewhere else so it would not have been so obvious.
Well at least no one is chopping up the dead Bearers and feeding them to people... But what am I saying, FF would never put something like that into a game, thats horrendous.
When I first did this side quest, my mouth as agape from the start of the revealing cutscene until like five minutes after the Quest Completed screen appeared.
This sidequest was super sad but I can't help but laugh because this sidequest just ended with Clive screaming at a kid about the reality of death then the words QUEST COMPLETE pop up.
I think I started cottoning on to what Chloe really was during the conversation with the farm lady. Maybe it's the fact that finding an animal seemed much too simple and nice after dealing with the noble.
You know its stuff like this in the game that makes me kinda glad they didn't shoot for racial diversity as bad as that sounds, have a single person of a different race be represented on either end of the stick and the drama fiends would go on a rampage lmao.

Regardless, after I did the one with the man and his son killing bearers for fun, as well as that pretty much every Waloed quest, such as the one with the gladiator pit, I felt as though the entirety of Valisthea needed an Exterminatus.

Love how the vouce actor put in just the right of tempered rage into his character's lines here. Its enough to let the audience know his anger towards such an atrocity, but held back by the fact that the girl herself didn't know any better til she was confronted by it.
This game’s side quests are unhinged, some of the early side quests are unhinged, some of the later side quests are also unhinged, but in different ways.

Monsters are grown.. thaught.. created by experience.
Hell even the fetch quests often help flesh out characters or part of the world.
Interestingly I think the music was a tip off for how dark some of the quests in the area were going to be. The moment Clive enters the Royal Meadows, the music turns to a more eerie/tense tone. Boy did it deliver on that too.

It's so weird people keep saying that the side quests are bad and not worth doing. So many of them have great stories and really flesh out the world. And the later ones really change how the world is. Don't skip the side quests
It's because (gameplaywise) they do not add to the game. They are just random encounters which you can already have while roaming the zones and then TP back. They do add substance to the world but some people already have enough with what they've seen for that or they fill in the blanks themselves.
I do really love that Clive isn't some generic moral highground hero.
You just know, almost any other tripple A studio would have done some sh*t where the protagonist just forgives everyone for their racism and horrific actions.
Our boy Clive got no issue with traumatising a child to put them on a better path.
This quest made me cry legitimately, maybe because it's pretty close to reality and how some treat others who are different, but just really hit me.
I like (so far) that sidquests are not 5,000 miles of traveling for 5 $

“All Bark” and “Playthings” were the turning point for me. The side quests before this were largely low stake, and did not have as much of a bite to them.
Until we reach these side quests, literally before the end of this part of the game.
These quests were important from a story perspective because it shows the cruelty the Bearers face, whether intentional or not. A reality check to players that even though Clive has the power to fight back, other Bearers are not blessed by the Eikons. Where Clive can use his powers freely, for Bearers each use of their innate magic saps them of their life.

I like the side-quests so far, they are quite simple but pack a lot of world building in them, including some pretty dark stuff about how this world works.
If there is an empire in an FF game it's got to be evil and they are doing a great job at it.

Yeah this sidequest fucked me up. Had to step back from the game for a bit, mainly because of how good the voice acting was
When I first did this side quest, my mouth as agape from the start of the revealing cutscene until like five minutes after the Quest Completed screen appeared.
First timers play through:aw finding a kitty…oh no
Second time:why are we still here….just to suffer?
This sidequest was super sad but I can't help but laugh because this sidequest just ended with Clive screaming at a kid about the reality of death then the words QUEST COMPLETE pop up.

And the other quest after this too, where you find out you're supposed to get eaten by a wolf for a noble brat's entertainment instead of killing it
I think I started cottoning on to what Chloe really was during the conversation with the farm lady. Maybe it's the fact that finding an animal seemed much too simple and nice after dealing with the noble.

And about phones, it's mostly western side of the globe thing to suck on those costly apples brands. Nobody asks you to buy the most expensive one, especially immediately upon release. Overhere everyone uses whats good enough. Now that i think about, even new phones nowadays offer more funcion than a current PS5 state. For a same-ish price as you say.

Regardless, after I did the one with the man and his son killing bearers for fun, as well as that pretty much every Waloed quest, such as the one with the gladiator pit, I felt as though the entirety of Valisthea needed an Exterminatus.
Theres another side quest in the same place, and the ending is so beautiful, where a father and his kid gets purged by wolfs
