    Thank you for being very transparent and honest with your Etsy journey and TH-cam videos. You have also been very helpful with the 3d model licensing for selling too. Since you were very transparent and helpful, I subscribed to your channel and like almost every video because I greatly appreciate that you don't paywall any of your information. I have since started my own Etsy page because of you and I would like to thank you for all of your help. Please continue to make these videos and I wish you a great 2025 for you and your online businesses.

    People also need to remember things like tax deductions. That 7k in ad cost, etsy plus sub cost and the etsy fees, and shipping costs not incurred to the clients cost directly (like gas for trips to post office, packing supplies, shipping fees on those "free shipping" orders) to the is tax deductible expenses (obviously know ask a tax professional for your geographic). As well as the machine cost as business equipment which is a depreciatory write off. Plus consumables all around like filament.
    This is why its very important to treat revenue creating hobbies as business in all regards. So while it may not be spendable profit margin, it is still VERY important numbers to take into account.

  • @jb510
    @jb510 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

    Appreciate the transparency. Nothing wrong with any of it, but you made zero mention of labor cost. The time you spent packing orders and processing prints… and setting up and maintains the shop space. Best of luck in 2025.

    • @TheMountainMaker
      @TheMountainMaker  หลายเดือนก่อน +5

      You're right, that's a critical aspect I need to factor in more closely next year. I didn't account for any of my labor because thats kind of part of the start up, first year cost... you spending way more time than its actually worth to get it off the ground, in hopes that in a couple years, the profits are higher and that upfront work pays off.... thats my hope anyways, and we're heading In that direction.

    • @jb510
      @jb510 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      @@TheMountainMaker Folks neglecting their own time value is a common problem with folks trying to turn hobbies into businesses. It becomes a bigger deal once you try to scale to the point of hiring help and needing to decide "Do I hire someone to do marketing" or "do I hire someone to manage my printers" or "do I hire someone to design my products" etc... Each of those founder rolls needs to be assigned a value based on it's return to evaluate if you should outsource it or not. As is having profit goals. Anyway... totally agree and understand about loosing money getting started. Again, best of luck and thanks for sharing.

    kudos on your first year in the printing biz and making a profit too. I didn't get started until Dec 6th with my store but listed a seasonal product that people wanted with an average ticket price of $27so things took off despite it being a new store. I feel like that is the key on etsy, we need higher ticket sales. Keep up the great work, I'm working to get sales on Amazon in 2025

    • @TheMountainMaker
      @TheMountainMaker  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's awesome! I hope you crush it on Amazon in 2025. I am definitely going to be doing more of my own designing and listing of those products going forward in the new year, but still debating is It worth it to list those on my current page with history and sales, or is it best to list everything on one shop. My gut tells me to keep the top 3 or 4 selling items on the page I have now and then list the new ones I design on there too. Then move everything else to its own shop and use that for experiments and another source of passive income is sort of what im thinking but im not sure I want to manage 2 etsy shops, plus youtube, amazon, my day job, etc... Time is the most valuable thing you have; he is not charging it correctly here. As a business owner, this should come first. You must pay yourself a flat pay, whether it's $40 or $50 bucks an hour of your time. Then whatever comes as "profit" is made by the company you're running for upgrade opportunities, etc.

    Those ads helped you potentially get repeat customers as well. On Etsy, if I find a shop I really like I continue to use them. Even if the shop is a little more expensive at times. But, I never purchase without free shipping. If I buy something from your shop, I am going to buy the minimum. Plus, your expenditures are tax deductible. Most businesses don't make a profit for their first few years.

    A big part of the equation is a persons situation, right? If you’re just starting off, have a regular job, and do it mostly for fun, you might not care about every dime. If you have a bunch of printers, employees, and depend on the business to eat and live, those dimes have a bigger meaning. It’s all relative.

    • @TheMountainMaker
      @TheMountainMaker  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      The time spent in the product and etsy side of my business really depends on the time of year. Up until October or November, I was pretty much sending orders out every day when they came in. Then as things picked up to even 5 or 10 orders in a day, I would wait for a 2 or 3 days to package everything up so instead of 6 or 7 nights per week packing 5-10 orders, I will spend 2 or 3 days per week packing 25-30 orders. Then I can spend the other days letting prints run and restocking what I need to send out.
      Hours spent on the business is a hard one for me because while it is a business, and should be treated as such, it is also my hobby so often I will have things going for the business or get things started for the business, then go and start playing around in orca, or finding new models to print out, work on a youtube video, etc. Schedule... I dont really have one, just when I feel like getting in the shop which lately, has been all the time.
      Im a night owl so I typically get most of my work done from like 3 or 4pm to 3 or 4am, sometimes later (or earlier depending on how you look at it).

    Love your videos! It's very eye opening on what you need to do and how you need to prepare for sell 3D prints. My one question though is how many items did you start out with on your Etsy shop? Also did you pre print out some inventory or just print what was needed for the first couple months? I also am thinking of taking this leap and those are questions nagging me i guess you could say. Thanks again and can't wait for the next video!

      I started out with 3 or 4 and slowly added more as I got more familiar with etsy and my printers. I always print out at least one of every product that I am going to list so I can see how it prints and tweak it if its not to standards. I also need the physical product for my listing photos so the customer gets exactly what they see in the photo. I see some shops using a color card with one sample product and color printed out, but that doesnt show the overall picture in my opinion. Sometimes its important to see how colors look when they are on top of eachother, like the paint bucket or pencil sharpener desk organizers that are offered in multiple colors with a single base color. Re reading your question, I also will print out a bed full of whatever im listing to at least make it an efficient use of the printer. Then ill move on to the next product and do the same. Once things start selling I can increase or decrease my on hand inventory as needed.

You could also maybe try ebay and your own website to take more profit. That is actually what I plan to do. Your video helped me a lot. Ignore bad comments, they cannot see bigger picture. You basically have how much, 5 printer? in one year for free. You will rock in 2025. I just have one question though, why didn't you try to model something yourself or try to search for more products? I can see that more than half of your revenue is from 2-3 products. Knowing what I know now about both, I would go with Amazon hands down. If I was just starting out not knowing much, I think etsy is still the way to go because they are geared towards the smaller business/maker and have better tips and a far easier listing and selling process than amazon does.
      But, using Amazon FBA, I can send the products in once and let amazon take care of the rest which lets me focus on doing some actual designing of my own and prototyping new things instead of purchasing or using free models to sell. I really want to focus more on designing and coming up with my own take on things for a change and amazon will allow me to do that more.

It's not to say others don't purchase things that need shipping, but for myself, if it needs to be shipped, i'd rather just order from Amazon, Etsy, the seller's own website... essentially a more trusted platform than Facebook Marketplace.

    How does shipping work with etsy? If I understand you correctly then the shipping is taken from the money you would otherwise receive. Does this mean you can ship under Etsy's name and they provide shipping labels or do you still have to pay the shipping fee/costs?
    For your information, I'm from Europe so I do not understand how shipping works in the US (or from where ever you might be from).

    • @TheMountainMaker
      @TheMountainMaker  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      So in the US at least, when a customer orders from you, the amount of the sale, minus etsy's fee's get put into your etsy balance. Depending on how you have that setup, you get paid daily, weekly or monthly, and funds from that days sales will become available the following day (for established sellers). Inside of Etsy Seller is your orders tab, and inside of there is where you can see all your open, pending and completed orders. (Sorry if you're already familiar with how that part of etsy works)... At the top of the orders page is a button that says "Get Shipping Labels", where etsy will let you select one, or all of your open orders and choose a package size, verify the customers shipping information and any tariff info that needs to be applied to ship outside of your country. When you are all done filling out that information, you click purchase labels and etsy deducts that amount from your payment accounts balance. If you already have a $0 balance (say you just got paid out), etsy will put your account in the negative to cover the cost of those labels, and when your next sale comes around, it will replenish the balance, bringing it closer to, or back above $0. Realistically, you could ship using any platform, and just get everything from your etsy balance deposited every day, but then you are upfront, out of your checking account, paying for each label you print, versus using your sales in etsy to cover that so you arent taking anything out of pocket at that time. Etsy also gives you heavily discounted shipping rates, similar to ship station or pirate ship so its a win win. I think with Etsy plus, I also get slightly lower shipping rates than that of a normal etsy seller. Long response, but I hope this explains it a little more.

    • @LoneDeathWolf
      @LoneDeathWolf หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TheMountainMaker I think I may have misunderstood you and thought that Etsy would deduct the shipping costs from your revenue, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Or it does and pays for a discounted shipping option from the deducted amount.

      Thank you for the detailed and fast answer!

      I ended up selling just under $13k in product for the year after etsy took their fees and removed the shipping costs. I got a little carried away with the etsy ads and should've shut them off on products where my ad spend was more than the revenue after a 3 or 4 month timespan. When it was all said and done, after ads, between amazon and etsy, we made just over $7k, then subtracting the cost of filament it was closer to $5500. Money doesn't account for the whole picture though, because like I said towards the end of the video, we now have over 150 5 star reviews and over 900 sales on our page, both something we didn't have going into 2024, so theres a lot more trust and confidence to buyers now than there was a year ago as well.

    Operating Costs: Rent, utilities, office supplies, maintenance, property taxes - Is your business location free?
    Legal and Professional Fees: Legal consultations, accounting services, permits and licenses - ?
    Marketing and Sales Costs: Advertising, public relations, content creation, marketing campaigns - Ads cost money too.
    Insurance Costs: Business liability insurance, property insurance
    Inventory Costs: Cost of goods sold for businesses selling physical products - Both in filament and in warehoused goods

Was profitable every year but Etsys fees are ridiculous especially when you get charged for off sight adds because they are basically charging you double. To be successful at Etsy your products have to be on the first page when they look up that item which I had a few of. That lead to a lot of sales on other items as well. Buying Etsy adds are a waist of money. Tried it a few different times and even with the adds 99% of my sales were without ads. You need to work on your SEO to get your products easier to find. Unfortunately 3D printing is quickly becoming a saturated market. The machines are becoming so easy and cheap and you pair that with people who have full time jobs that don't rely on 3D printing income so they undercut and sell cheap on etsy to try and capture sales to feel like a real business owner dragging the whole market down. I do like using Etsy for product research though because I can list something, turn on ads for a few weeks, a month and see how its performing, does it get sales, etc and then decide if its something I want to spend the time setting up in Amazon because it does take longer and there are more processes when it comes to the amazon side of it.
