  • The Bluebell Railway's Keep Up The Pressure Campaign is shortly to move on to raise funds for the boiler overhaul of this classic Southern Railway locomotive. The Maunsell Locomotive Society has been working hard to raise the money for "Stowe" over recent years, and are funding much of the other work.
However, the cost of Stowe's boiler refurbishment is the most expensive of all the boilers we are currently doing, estimated at £250,000.
This video explains what is involved in the overhaul of "Stowe" . The work is similar (but not exactly the same) on all locomotives being overhauled so also gives a good introduction to the appeal in general.
    Donate to the appeal at

Note that the online appeal is now at: www.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/KUTP

Glen Mears - this is the biggest boiler overhaul we've ever undertaken in our own works, so unlikely to be next year. We have Sir Archie and the O1 to look forward to next year, we hope. Stowe is nice in Malachite, but the Maunsell Locomotive Society tend to favour their designer's own choice of colour, when locos are in ticket, and the chance to repaint in other schemes comes when out of ticket and starting to look tatty. But we have Cheltenham with us in Malachite this weekend!

It'll be excellent to see Stowe back in steam again, I have to say though I'd rather they keep the malachite green than go back to the traditional olive colour livery

Ken Hope: They can indeed pull trains of 7-8 coaches when those trains are formed of light-weight 4-wheel coaches (10-12 tons each), and the Metropolitan coaches (20 tons each)! The video was talking about Mk.1s which weigh 33-37 tons each!). Now we have a 1-in-55 gradient up to East Grinstead, and a longer run, we need larger engines, and also with the Victorian and Edwardian engines now being over 100 years old, we don't want to thrash them and wear them out too quickly! They could haul more than 4 Mk.1s, but we would prefer to see larger engines on the heavier trains, and keep the Victoiran and Edwardian engines for the Victorian and Edwardian coaches. There's plenty of work for the smaller engines, with the Pullman train and the Lounge Car afternoon tea train comfortably within their capacity.

According to my research, Stowe resided at the East Somerset Railway after it resided at Beaulieu and before it arrived at the Bluebell Railway. Be that as it may, Stowe never steamed at the ESR.

Eddy2730 Indeed it did. There was a booklet all about the locomotive, published by the Bluebell, back in the 1980s. There's also information on the locomotive via our web site:
      www.bluebell-railway.co.uk/bluebell/loco_overhaul.html#stowe
which also has a link to the web page for the locomotive on the Maunsell Locomotive Society's web site.

It will be quite nice to see her out. Do you think she will ever double head with the watercress line's 925 cheltenham. I'm also looking forward to seeing 73082 and 80151 out.
