- High angle L/S of an electric diesel train speeding through the countryside as commentator talks of the modernisation of the railways. Mix through to M/S of a steam train (name on the side reads 'Primrose') coming along the track to join up with some carriages; pan right to show another engine, 'Bluebell' on the near side track at the Bluebell Railway in Sussex.
M/S of some ladies in Victorian costume walking through the station entrance; C/U of the sign above the entrance reading 'Bluebell Railway Preservation Society'. The Victorian ladies walk along the platform beside a steam train (named 'Stepney') and chat with the driver before getting into a carriage.
Various shots of the train being prepared for the journey; the driver polishes his cab; a man clips some wire on the funnel; a jet of steam squirts out from the wheels; the ticket office is put in position by three men. A stack of tickets in a holder is placed on the counter; a family exchanges their British Railways tickets for some Bluebell Railway tickets there. M/S of the station sign reading 'Sheffield Park'.
Nice M/S of many people (in normal dress) getting into carriages; the driver is given the key to the railway points so he has right of way during the journey. C/U of the guard waving a flag; M/S as the train moves off. Various travelling shots from the train, including a nice point of view shot from the front of the cab as we go under a bridge. M/Ss of a young man pulling levers that work the signals. Commentator says most workers here are amateurs, but one engine driver works for British Railways.
M/S of coal being shovelled into the train boiler. As the train comes into a station the driver hands the points key to the young signal man. M/S of the steam train coming towards us under a bridge.

Just for added irony: the 'modern' Blue Pullman seen at the beginning would have been scrapped by 1973. Stepney, Primrose, Bluebell and the Metropolitan coaches are all still around in 2014.
The bigger irony... Is that steam power was proven to be more powerful then diesel. XD
@@Zapwave certainly true in many cases doubly so for the early days of diesels. That said, I can’t deny that there are some diesel locomotives that have a charm of their own. I know that in the UK, the preserved deltics apparently have a bit of the following and for people in the United States the E & F unit diesels are still very famous in their appearance to this day. Honestly, I think the only diesel locomotive that could really compare to steam engines in the amount a single engine could pull was the union pacific centennial, which has the distinction of the largest diesel locomotive in the world. That said, I really wish there were more steam engines running today.

Fascinating to see the early days of the Bluebell Line, it's now a big operation, extended back to East Grinstead so it now has a direct National Rail connection.

I need to revisit the Bluebell Railway. Happy childhood memories and I hear that it's expanded. They're hardly "amateurs" to run such a fine railway. Unpaid professionals and more power to them!

I was there on the day it was re-opened by Anthony Kimmins, a local chap in the film business. A few weeks later there was a visit from C. Hamilton Ellis, a railway writer and artist who had written a book on the London, Brighton and South Coast Railway.

I love that all the ladies amongst the casual visitors were turned out in nice dresses and high heels with their hair styled. Nowadays it's just hoodies, leggings and trainers. How things have changed, and not all for the better.

Interesting video, the single line staff looks pretty much a chair leg, well make do 😂.
A story in Victoria, Australia was that on the Murrayville line, the staff was lost and rather than trouble Head Office about it used a beef leg bone. This when on for several months until the real staff was found in a GY wagon at the Geelong wheat terminal.
Well! Head Office would have certainly sent a “Please Explain” letter to Murraville.

No, but it was coming to an end. The engines were living on borrowed time. The final steam engine Evening Star was built in 1960
