Something you missed. Sir Stirling Moss (& Denis Jenkinson) originated the idea of modern "Pace-Notes", at the 1955 Mille Miglia. Prior to that event, rally co-drivers navigated via maps & tulip diagrams. Moss & Jenkinson were the first to write detailed notes from reconnaissance of the route, and work out a working system for the co-driver to communicate these notes to the driver as-needed. It worked, 1,000 miles were covered in 10:08, beating the second car (driven by a certain J.M.Fangio) by over 30 minutes...
