I replaced the original pads on my 2016 LCD-4 recently with 2023 Audeze leather pads. (Pad wear was causing a channel imbalance, so it had to be done.) It sounds a lot like Crinacle’s measurement of the 2021 LCD-X, but with 3 or 4 dB less of a dip at 4 kHz. Resolve measured a unit that was way darker despite having the same generation of pads, which leads me to think drivers are contributing at least as much to unit variation as pads.
Really? I was seeing 2-3 offers on eBay last April when I decided these were the ones to get vs. the Edition XS, I even managed to snatch one of them for 380 EUR shipped, via Best Offer and a bit of haggling. But yeah, sad the math doesn't seem to be working out for them to do another run, even with 7.3k new requests piled up on the Massdrop page.
Comfort is a tricky thing. Maybe even more so than sound when it comes to subjectivity. For me maybe 5% of headphones have comfort issues I can force myself to find mention worthy and the rest are perfectly fine. I can barely differentiate comfort between most since it matters so little. Then again a friend went through twenty pairs until he could wear one for more than 15min.
What's up with the Podcast of this? I was traveling recently and downloaded this Via Spotify and only got like 40 min. Tried it for a few and they are all the same. Doesn't have the whole show in the Podcast.
Wow, an Amazon reviews reference LOL. Maxwell is so bad that Sony had to buy Audeze for that precise set. And Hifiman isn't as big as you think. Their market size was estimated to 35m at the end of 2023, ...And Audeze's market size estimated to be around 50m for the same period. Source? HTM research.
Would love to see Metal on more of these if he's up for it!
this popped up on my feed and I somehow unconsciously knew metal was gonna be the mystery guest
metal the fkn goat! miss this guy and his calm and highly informative descriptive reviews
Metal! Bought three different headphones on your fine advice!

I thoroughly enjoy these podcasts but it's hard to understand y'all when you're talking over each other every now and then 😂

legend
Also, Audeze is minuscule in comparison to HiFiMAN. And the Maxwell is getting pretty bad reviews on Amazon.
Do you have any souce for the size of these companies?

The more I think about it…it’s always “an opinion with an audience”.
