What’s the movie A River Runs Through It about?
Two boys, Norman (Craig Sheffer from Nightbreed) and Paul (Brad Pitt from Ocean's Eleven and Meet Joe Black), grow up in 1920s Missoula, Montana under the watchful eye of their father, a Presbyterian minister (Tom Skerritt from Up in Smoke). Their mornings are spent in school and religious study, while their afternoons are devoted to fly fishing in the nearby Blackfoot River. At home, however, the family's stoic emotions hint that trouble is to come. Norman goes to the east coast for college and lives there for six years, without returning home until then. In the meantime, Paul gets a job as a prolific journalist and makes a name for himself back home. The movie is about Norman's return home and his and Paul's summer together. As adults, Paul is a rebellious journalist and his brother, Norman, is a level-headed, grounded teacher. Norman matures and channels his rebellion through his writing while dating Jessie Burns (Emily Lloyd from Wish You Were Here and In Country), while his reckless brother Paul turns to gambling and liquor. The film chronicles their intertwining and often conflicting lives, focusing on Norman's point of view, as they grow up in the shadow of their minister father. A great deal of the film surrounds the men's love of fly fishing for trout in Montana's rivers, and their shared experiences through it while growing up.

This point in the film always makes me cry. Every single time. This is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. It covers so many themes perfectly: the bond of family; the deep solitude of loss; but most of all, I think it captures the valiant effort we make to be truly known by those we love, and to know them as well.

@mytravels8685 That it didn't matter who he was in terms of his skills/accomplishments or lack thereof. He was a good son, brother, and friend-a beautiful part of the world no matter what. Over time, a river will carve its path through earth, and all you can really do is appreciate its beauty instead of trying to reroute it. The parents were just as broken-up about Paul's death as they would've been over Norm's death who turned into exactly as they planned. It seems in that moment, Norm defaults to focusing on what Paul did best, but his father quickly corrects him in acknowledging that what was lost with Paul's death was nothing less than something deeply beautiful in world-enough to be mourned for the rest of his days.

If I remember correctly, I've read that supposedly in the book Paul had one hand that was larger than the other, which is why he covers his whole face with it at one point in the movie in a subtle way. This also explains why their father asked which hand it was. It was his stronger hand that he fought to the death with trying to save himself. I'm not really sure why that makes the father that concerned or sad regarding which hand was broken. I guess it's maybe a token that Paul tried as hard as he could to live even in the midst of bad circumstances? But Paul also got himself into all of those circumstances willingly.

@@mikeluke2457 Yeah, if I remember correctly, Paul's larger hand was...right one, I think? Biblically, the "right hand of God" is the figurative expression of where Christ sits. People who were blessed were oftentimes blessed via the "right hand" or on the "right" side of their father or whoever was blessing them. So I suspect that maybe the right hand was also...suspected to be more powerful and meaningful in that their father is also a minister and it has biblical connotations? I'm just speculating at this point. lol

When Norman tells his father that nearly all the bones in Paul's hand were broken and the father asks what hand and Norman replies with "his right hand", is the significance of this that Paul was a fighter and he did not go down without putting up a fight?

What an Excellent Story, & of course the Movie Justifies it being So.
In my Recollection of First The Book? Then the Brief references in the Film 📽️👀 I took it that the Hand Tells,
Camera Focusing, at key Points? On say even Norman's at the Start. Then the Metredom Rhythm, of a Fly Rod, technic would Develop a Stronger 💪💪 Hand. Whether the Individual was Right Handed, or Left Handed.
    The Conversation about Paul's
Death was the most Hard too deal with Episode, Norman & His Father.
Apparently ever had too Face with One Another. As the Father says Climbing the Stairs , away, from Norman. He was Bueatiful.

This movies true moral point is about a hypocrite preacher who wisecracks a whole lifetime every Sunday in church puts his nose in problems of everyone else in town. but is too ashamed and proud too adress the gambling addiction and debts of the son -to his son and family and others that could help so he swipes it under the rug like nothing is happening until the son is dead one day!
Movie about ignorance and the consequences if you’re too stuck up and proud in your White Castle to face the hard truth. If you’re like this you can’t help anyone all you can do is live with the consequences.
Hence the fitting title “a river runs through it” and washes everything with blissful ignorance between us so I can live peacefully in my own reality.

There are implications to his death. His hand was broken, just the one: he may have been caught cheating. His body was dumped in a alley, in a State, at that time, had few alleys. They wanted the body found, or they didn't care enough to bother. Montana in the early1900s was a tough place. Look up D.C. Stephenson or Huey Long for an idea, or even The Red Harvest. Bad times.
