- In this video, Madan Gowri speaks about the recently released Malayalam blockbuster movie, Manjummel Boys, and the real incident in which the movie was inspired and made. He says that a gang of 11 boys from Kerala have travelled to Tamil Nadu's Kodaikanal for a trip. As a part of the trip, those boys went to Guna Caves, which are located in Kodaikanal, got trapped in the caves, and were finally rescued from there. This Manjummel Boys movie is based on this real-life incident. Guna Cave was named after the Guna movie, in which Kamal Hassan was the protagonist.

I had the chance to go to the Guna caves in 1995 after the film Guna was released.
We went as an Aptech computer class team of 30+ with 5 ladies one of which was me during college days.
We were sightseeing. We happened to reach Guna caves - Devils Kitchen as it is labelled.... Some of our team boys stepped down and came back safely saying it was a good view. I was wearing a saree with slippers. So I hesitated but my team boys encouraged me. I took the bold step to climb down to the caves.
It was steep, wet soil slope, quite slippery, with the roots of those trees and rainy soil sliding out when you step on it.
It was 2 in the afternoon but the surroundings were like 5 in the evening. We went inside and took photographs with candles and torchlight.
No mobile phones or mobile torches those days. I stood on the rocks and took photos proudly. Remembering the Guna film song all of us took group and individual photos, it was very clear with the meager lights that we had.
But it was a wild experience vivid and close to my heart till date.
We returned as it was getting dark. Climbed back safely, up the steep slippery rugged, wet soil with the help of my teammates. I was scolded then appreciated by my tutor trainers for boldly getting down with boys to the cave rocks, that too totally unprepared in a saree & slippers.
Today when my daughters asked me I was narrating this great experience of those youthful happy days of a 3 day trip to Kodaikanal and Guna Caves.

I am happy that u r safe but u shouldn't have gone there it was a happy and adventurous experience because u came back safely but if u have got injured that will be the most painful experience for all of you when something is told to be dangerous never go there cause we don't know what will happen 😊

We were just walking across those roads, snapping pictures, one set of members went in, came back and narrated it was beautiful, so the rest of us went with them, they for the second time. We didn''t mind the rainy soil, slope or slippery plants too. I really thanked God now that we were safe then.

Perunthenaruvi waterfalls -Pathanamthitta dist (Kerala).Set against the backdrop of the Western Ghat Mountains, the fall appears beautiful as well as mysterious due to the way the rocky bed presents itself to the visitors.
During the peak monsoon season from June to October, most of the boulders will be under the waters. The river will be flowing with great force and there will not be an indication of the waterfall at all while looking at it.During the summer months, they look like stacked beehives.
Myths surrounding Perunthenaruvi Waterfalls :-
There are many instance of visitors getting injured due to the rocky bed of the falls. Most of the boulders can be easily climbed and explored but the crevices and slipperiness of the rocks presents chances for accidents. There is an interesting myth sighted for this.
According to the myth, a gigantic and strongly built tribal man named Chakkan Velan lived in the nearby village. He was a heavy drinker and had the habit of molesting women and causing disturbances to the normal life of the people. As his mischiefs became unbearable, some of the people made a plan to kill him by kicking him into the rocks near the falls after intoxicating him with alcohol. When the plan was finally in action, Chakkan Velan sensed the danger and caught hold of bunch of people along with him when he fell, drowning all.
After this mishap, it is believed that the accidents occured at the waterfall area were caused by the wandering spirit of Chakkan Velan. To prevent the wrath of the spirit, a statue of Chakkan Velan was erected in the nearby temple and people started worshipping it. The main offerings at the temple are chicken and liquor, and once the worshipping was started, it is believed that the accidents at the falls were significantly reduced.

I watched manjummel boys movie yesterday and I enjoyed it very much. Most people at my age can relate to this movie in number of ways.
I went there in 1990 along with my college friends. It was steep trek down. We managed to get down without much problem. The cave was so huge and quite cold. The sand was very soft and there were multiple caves inside like rooms. When we wanted to get out we could not climb and we got scared. Then we saw a small light in the darkness and we started crawling in that direction because we did not have any other option but to save our lives. It was a small outlet and we managed to come out in the other side of the mountain peak. While standing at the peak we saw the other rocks standing like pillars. It was a beautiful sight. Finally we had to jump from one rock to the next (the one you showed in the picture) and we did it because we did not have any option. We were very lucky that day! We survived! I have done various treks including Everest base camp but Devil's kitchen is very difficult and will not go again!.
Yeah I too went in 1996-97 with my parents and it was steep and there were lot of people inside the cave and people there were keeping on warning to mind our steps and be careful

Madhikettan solai is a beautiful place, of course i remember trying to explore it , Strangely all the trees resemble each other and u get confused once you enter a certain distance into the forest, i have went inside few 100 meters and had to come back due to certain safety precautions as crossing the fence inside the forest might cause confusion and will make it difficult to come out from the place , awesome experience from my childhood this kindled my memory 😊
The confusion is because a flower that grows only the place mathikettan solai, when the flower dries and fell down from the plant, it became a herb and when you step onto the dry flower, it creates a fragnance that reacts differently in your brain cells. Like a sedation. Only yogis and siddhas can survive mathikettan solai. Even the name itself define it. Mathi-consciousness kettan-got lost. It means went crazy. I understand the name Devil's Kitchen is attributed to the fog emanating from the gorge/hole leaving an impression the devil is cooking deep inside. Kamal Hassan himself mentions this in the interview with the Manjummel crew. This is also shown in the movie during the final cave scene with smoke /fog emitting from the holes after it's plugged with steel mesh.
I didn't think the caves have any geo thermal activity or heat, but happy to be corrected.

Hi Bro good day to you. Did you visit Batu Caves during your trip to Malaysia? There's a small entrance at the side of the stairs which is already closed. It was closed for the same reason. Many people who entered the small cave did not manage to come out. Just FYI.
