I didn't know about this change of direction for peppermint, as I first downloaded this OS 5 days ago to install on an old 2009 samsung laptop. Every other OS has a ton of issues, I tried arch with xfce, Ubuntu 64 and 32 bit, linux mint, AntiX linux, the laptop would boot in minutes for each of these, and was very laggy, except AntiX, it's so lightweight that it had no issue with lag, but without exception they all had the weird issue where the text would flicker, letters would disappear, graphical elements woulkd just vanish, become black boxes, etc. Then I installed this specific version of Peppermint and it works like a charm, no issues whatsoever, it boots in 30 seconds instead of 4 minutes, opening a program (EVEN CHROMIUM) takes 3 seconds after boot and less than a second after that. Installing flatpak with flathub works perfectly, the apps appear in the system menu correctly.
From my point of view this OS is a godsent, but I have no idea how it was before so I can't really talk. Maybe they shouldve just forked the project and named this something else.
I can use bluetooth, I can use my sonos, chromecast to my tv, my printer worked perfectly first try, I even install steam to play some good old Duke3D. What more could I ask for?

Just coming back to Linux after several years away. Agree with your points, but I still selected Peppermint to obtain a stripped down Debian 12 with a XFCE desktop where I can install exactly the apps I am interested in. Firefox installed from their welcome screen quickly and smoothly. They made it very clear on their web page that no browser was installed. My alternative was the Debian XFCE image and then strip out all the items I did not want - would be the same thing in the end accomplished from the other direction. After some more OS trials, I shifted to MX Linux Xfce for their extensive tool set although the PM default menu is exactly the look I was going for.

When checking for RAM used on a clod boot, it's best to run HTOP in a terminal. That included task manager on Xfce does add a fair amount to the Used RAM Total. At least, that's been my experience with Mint, Ubuntu and Manjaro, all on Xfce. FWIW.
I applaud what the Peppermint team is doing, remaking a beloved distro is no easy feat and is fraught with missteps, but I am confident they will get there in time with a coherent expression of Pepp that would have made Mr. Greaves smile.
    Kudos to you folks.

The Web Browser is " Debian Sensible Browser" which uses Vim keys for navigation. It show lots of Developer only choices all over it. Vim Yes, no nano. I have netbook like machine. This will be a great start for that machine. It save me from building from a bare server installation of Debian. It is more of a kit car Distro. The user has to bolt it together to their personal taste. It can see it used in VMs. One would remove excess stuff and clone the remaining system This id not your average ready to run Distro. It is more a Distdo Kit each user must finish themselves.

5:10 Feren OS has Web Browser Manager... for now.
As of Feren OS 2023.07, this tool has been retired in favour of providing a category in the release's all-new Store rewrite that lets you choose from even more browsers than Web Browser Manager allowed you to. *Note that this will only be available for testing as of Beta 2, and that at the time of writing Feren OS 2023.04 is the latest release.*
As it stands right now, the Web Browser Manager will live on in the upcoming Bodhi Linux release, and was featured in Peppermint 10 Respin too, and as mentioned will live on in spirit in Feren OS's new Store application.

I tried this new version. For a light weight distro it was just fine. I found the reviewer poking around forever looking for a software manager with just using synaptic first was very tiring. Also the reviewer keeps banging on about new Linux users. Well, Peppermint OS documentation says the OS 'provides a user with the opportunity to build the system that best fits their needs.' Nothing is mentioned by Peppermint OS that this distro is for new Linux users.

I liked the old version and used it on older hardware. Of course they changed the direction, but to be honest I like the new version too. Actually I use it now on my main desktop and I am quite happy with it. They offer a (nicely themed) nearly vanilla Debian and added some basic tools. For me it is a great base to build up your individual desktop (i.e. using only flatpaks or snaps).
They are certainly still looking for their direction and there are still several bugs in the system, but I personally like the approach.

I completely agree. But going a step further, I think that if you're going to use Debian, you should just use Debian. Debian includes drivers now, and it is quite user friendly depending on which desktop you choose. Cinnamon and KDE Plasma are probably the best for new users. Finding help with Debian on the web is easy enough. I've used Linux for over 20 years, and used it exclusively for the last 3 or 4. My wife just started using it every day about 3 years ago. To her, there was really no difference between Debian Cinnamon and Linux Mint Cinnamon. She was fine figuring out either one. She settled on Mint, and that's what she's been using since then. Could've been either one, though.

You point out that "system restore" and "backup" are not necessarily the same thing, in reference to Timeshift, which I gather just takes snapshots of selected system files? (I'm a Linux newbie preparing to switch over) Back around Windows98, I was using a program which I believe was called Rollback, or maybe GoBack, which could track and back up to a dedicated partition pretty much every changed file on the hard drive, both system and data. If I remember, one had to set intervals for snapshots and also either time before deletion, file exclusions, and/or limit backup storage via partition size but within those constraints this program made possible complete reversion to any given point on the timeline and could be run during bootup even if the OS wouldn't boot. The program also allowed for recovery of specific files without changing anything else. I wonder if there is anything like that currently available on Linux? That sort of backup tool gave one a wonderful sense of security, and storage is so much cheaper now....

    • @SwitchedtoLinux
      @SwitchedtoLinux  ปีที่แล้ว

Timeshift will allow for this, but several other applications also do. The Linux Mint Backup tool works in this way, and it is designed for the backups. I have explained the differences and options here:

I have never tried out Peppermint yet I would be most prowned to use LMDE for the tried and true. Peppermint does
seem to be resources friendly as it is designed for. Yet it is too busy in the menu system of apps, which could make
a new user overwhelmed due to the immediate learning curve. Perhaps if there was a tutorial page at their website,
that has a web shortcut placed at the welcome screen on the desktop to the community page could be advantageous
to the new user for the first time.

Hey Tom, IDK what YT is playing at, but when I use the channel-search on your channel page, the top three results are videos from other channels than yours, after that the rest are yours. (Sort of like how Google search gives a list of ads before the actual results.)
For example, if I search your channel for "self-hosting e-mail" the top 3 results are:
    1) Christian Lempa's "Host your own Mail Server, is it a good idea?"
    2) SpaceRex's "you should NOT host your own email server! (and here is why)"
    3) DB Tech's "Let's Talk About Self-Hosting Email"
Just thought you might want to know. Cheers.

I like peppermint even more because it is the best debian fork who build debian 12 very early as compared to other distros like Mx linux
I also like the theming and icons now as compared to past peppermint
It is a good thing to give user a choice that which browser they need so they dont need to uninstall and install other browser
We also still can install nemo file manager (No big deal)
Only my favorite thing i miss in this is the linux mint software manager
If new user know how to install and partition linux so they will also know how to install browser from a given peppermint welcome screen because there is a word install packages and web browser mention here so it is not difficult
User already show some courage by install linux and leave windows so they can install some basic things from the software store or welcome screen

"4 terminals" … xfce-terminal and xterm (which provides two wrapper shell scripts that invoke it with different internationalization options.) I know the terminal is considered not sexy anymore, but having broken one, I can see advantages to having a backup.
I'd say Peppermint has taken a step backward in terms of functionality as part of getting the hell away from Ubuntu. It would've been good if they'd gone to LMDE to pick up those things they'd borrowed from Mint since they're generally available on LMDE. Hope to see the next release take it back to its roots a little more.

I used Peppermint 10 on an older laptop back in 2019/20 and found it to be quite responsive and a nice light OS for that hardware and quite new user friendly. The switch to Debian is less impactful to me than the other changes in terms of Desktop environment, lack of a browser on install, in 10 at least both Nemo and Thunar installed, as you noted several terminals, no package manager other than Synaptic and on and on. it seems very disjointed and lost to some degree and i simply moved that old laptop to Mint and it runs fine.

I'm still a bit torn about the new PM and whether I'll continue using it in the future. I will focus on the negatives for now based on my usage. I do NOT like their new forum, which is not as simple and much uglier than the original. It seems soulless to me and I don't really post any comments or questions like I used to on the old one. It no longer feels like a kind, special community like before. The new mods and devs seem to be more ready to dismiss ideas and don't seem as welcoming to criticism or suggestions as before. The way the OS updates seems very disjointed but when a major update happens, it always seemed to me like even the old PM wasn't that good in that department. I usually just download the latest version after it's been out for about 3 months so any issues may hopefully be resolved so I can clean install the latest w/minimal issues. I tried the Devuan version and it periodically exhibits failures to update that (per PM forum posts) have to do with the entity that updates Devuan keys/repos. The PM forum basically advises to wait some time in order for it to become re-synchronized with Devuan repos. The "xDaily" option for updating is a bit redundant but does contain other system processes options after looking for updates. "PepScope" listed within the PM Hub is supposed to allow updates for Devuan and for PepTools, but for me, these no longer seem to show any updates (last listed update was on Feb.11). I'm unsure if this means I need to check to see if there is a newer version of PM Devuan that I'd need to clean install. Update manager listed within PM Hub lists the ability to update PepTools, but when I try, I get an error msg listing "checking codeberg for updates; applying updates" and just freezes there with no completion confirmation. Another issue I find with the new PM is that it can be very tricky to install some programs compared to the past iterations. It seems like (since they have stripped out many prior included apps) there are a lot less built-in dependencies and depending on an app you may wish to install, you may find it a lot more difficult and time consuming to install said app since you may have to search for and install some dependencies that the app may require. This may not be applicable for more high profile apps that may offer flatpak or snap versions, but there are more obscure apps I find indispensable that may be less frequently updated or may not yet offer a pre-packaged version containing all relevant dependencies for their app. I find that the barrier to entry into Linux via PM will now be much harder for new users by removing simple things like a web browser, even though one can install one via the PM Hub Suggested Packages option. This option is not perfect though as an example would be that it offers a download option for the Snap (packages) Store but it fails to install for me and gives an error msg instead. Kumo is terrible and should have never been released in its current state. ICE wasn't perfect either, but it was at least usable and predictable. Firefox via Kumo is basically a much more rudimentary and option-less version of what could be done compared to prior ICE installed versions. I'm unsure why ICE couldn't be further updated since it was almost perfect, instead of the wheel being reinvented by introducing Kumo. Lastly, there are several file managers included and sometimes you have files open in Thunar (ie. locating where FF downloaded a file to), even though Nemo is supposed to be the default file manager, which I find very annoying as I prefer Nemo and its features.

The developer had a signature on the forums where he spelled out 666 in Linux permissions and captioned it “the number of the beast”.
