This is amazing! We are headed there in October and turtles are my favorite! I don't have a lot of experience. Do you think it's okay for beginners? Did you bring your own flippers too? Are there places to rent life jackets? Are you able to provide more detailed directions on where to go. I've seen so many reviews of area and actual directions to get to the good stuff is confusing! Thank you!

I would definitely not start out at Smith's Reef if you're a beginner - you have to navigate rocks to get into the water, it's pretty far out, deep and can be overwhelming for beginners. I would go to Coral Gardens Reef until you feel very comfortable. We didn't see as much sealife in one shot there as we did at Smith's Reef but at one time or another there were still turtles, eagle rays, lion fish and a whole bunch of other tropical fish (and no sharks 😉) !
You can walk to Coral Gardens along the main beach or, if you're travelling by car, park along Penn's road and walk down to the beach, there's a public foot path. The reef is literally right in front of the Coral Gardens Resort, you can pretty much walk out to it with your feet still touching the ground. There are orange buoys in the water that indicate where it is - and it's important that you not swim within those buoys, it's a protected habitat, instead swim alongside them. If I remember correctly, there's usually a local vendor that rents life jackets, paddle boards, masks, fins and other swimming accessories along the beach nearby (i brought my own).
Once you're confident enough to go to Smith's reef, know that it's a bit more remote and only accessible by car, and then on foot (you can't really walk there from the main beach as it gets rocky and there are private homes instead of hotels). From Lower Bight road, turn into Bridge road (near the marina), and then turn left on Coconut road, drive all the way to the end - you'll find a parking lot. From there walk to the beach and turn right once you get there. Keep walking along the beach until you see the sign for Smith's reef. Again, there are orange buoys that indicate the protected coral area in the water. I would suggest to stay around there if you're not very comfortable, however there is a lot of coral around and good snorkelling farther out from the buoys.

Ahaha! Snorkeling definitely takes some getting used to. I've seen people have panic attacks in the water before. But you just have to remember that nothing will hurt you, if you don't hurt it first!

What beach access did you use
Where did you get in. I just came back and it was incredibly rocky at the shoreline. I appeared you swam out a ways? What time of year were you there? I didn't have the experience you did. But quite honestly, at the point in out trip when we stopped I didn't think we were going to make it to Smith's Reef.
Hi! We were there this time last year, actually (Mid to late January)!
It is quite rocky at the shoreline for a few meters, but drops off into sand after that. When we went back after the first time, I scooted in on my behind because it was really rough on the feet. I’m sorry you didn’t have the same experience we did. For us, Smith’s Reef was the best snorkelling experience we had in the Turks, followed by the Bight Reef/ Coral Gardens. Maybe you’ll have better luck there? It’s very sandy and near to shore - we saw rays, turtles and lion fish too, but no sharks. The coral was much more damaged than at Smith’s Reef though.

Hi! Once you get to the smiths reef parking lot, walk down to the beach and turn right, you have to walk along the shore for about 5-10 mins until a point where you’ll see orange boeys in the water and a sign on shore saying “Smiths Reef” and indicating some rules. There’s usually some other people around there and sometimes some snorkel boats too! Hope you find it and enjoy!!
