    i'm listening to this high, and for the first 5 minutes i was staring intently at him playing, watching his hands and face, and noticing the slow, subtle camerawork, before i realized i was looking at a still image »,,»

    ERIK SATIE is the master of slowness, the slow as an important facet of the art of music - and Leeuw is the only one, that I heard till now, that perfectly comprehended this. I was lucky to discover Satie with him. It seemed, by the time, when I began listening to the 1st "Gnossienne", that the flow of time had stopped around me... it was magic. It was hard , after, to listen to other interpreters!

      I found a lightness in myself that I have never felt, an inner peace that I did not think was achievable. it truly is a transcending experience to be graced by Satie and Leeuw. I am happy to hear that there are many others who have felt encapsulated in the incredible beauty that exists in this music.

      You have hit the nail on the head. No one else online has the respect Reinbert gave. Exactly, the other "interpreters" are misunderstood.

    When i listened to Leeuw's play of early Satie works for the first time i found the Gymnopedies were played muuuuch too slow (the version from 1977). i was a teenager then when i discovered him. now, 20 years later, i *bath* in his melancholic, deep & breathing interpretation. he seems not just to play but to *live* each note. as if de Leeuw had composed those pieces...

      I'm totally with you Thomas. I had exactly the same experience; apparently this music has to "grow on you". After listening to Anne Quefelec's (extremely hasty) recordings of Satie, I re-discovered the sheer beauty of Mr. De Leeuw's work. The magic is in the silence.
      It's interesting to compare this older recording of the gnossiennes with a much more recent one (plus fascinating footage) called: "Reinbert de Leeuw - Erik Satie/ Gnossiennes 1-6 (live @TivoliVredenburg Utrecht)". Mr. De Leeuw's "hesitations" are magnificent and hard to reproduce (as amateur pianist). I have nothing but respect for him.

      Too true about Mr. de Leeuw. I like to play Satie on the fiddle, but it was de Leeuw's excellence, individualism and tastefully lyrical nature that inspired me not to be lazy about it and to attempt to do it (hopefully) reasonably gracefully and artistically. Overall, the best way to play Satie seems to be to do so as artfully individualistically as one can...one way or another...a bit peppy OR a bit "slow." There is no, singular "correct" way to play Satie. But that generous open-endedness is half the fun. Vive Satie! And (additionally) vive de Leeuw!

    My favorite Satie performer, by far. To me it's always been music of solitude; I can't imagine what it would be like to experience it like this, in a room with many people all tuned in and hanging on every note.

  • @prototropo
    @prototropo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    Reinbert is the premier interpreter of Satie. Whoever heard the Gymnopedie No. 1 played with such existential reverence? It’s like a lullaby from some future civilization in his hands.
    I am very sad to discover Reinbert died last year. I listen to his recordings frequently-I wish I could have told him how much musical serenity he brought to me, especially on lonely or rainy days.

      I wrote that for someone I closely know who deserves a horrific punishment, albeit perhaps in a slowed extrasensory form of tantalising and unreachable love as in an ayahuascan experience - a glacial regret he'll have to endure for choosing to hurt instead of love. That trip incidentally was one of the best experiences in my life. It's cool you had such deep studies in the Amazon.

It does add an air of pretentiousness, and I feel like he gets a bit too playful with his difference, obviously there are a couple mistakes also-but it’s still absolutely lovely, I love it.. esp compared to idiots playing it with nun but grandiosity and unneeded speed.

      Good point about de Leeuw's excellence. But you might like recordings by Ciccolini, as he "got" Satie very well too. That stated, although I would not condone such a creatively potentially cruel (and difficult to enforce!) restriction, it is true that many pianists who deign to interpret Satie sometimes do so in a way that tries to be too show-offy and, at times, pointlessly virtuosic...instead of simply allowing the music to be lyrical and enjoyable. To each his own, but (yes) some interpretations are not so pleasant to behold. There may be no single "correct" way to interpret (fast/slow) any one work by Satie, but his works ought to be (one might hope) lyrically and artistically engaging without any inartistic, stressed-out extremes. With Satie, generally subtlety and tastefulness are the answer - that is unless the piece requires some lighthearted and hilariously shocking POUNDING, as is sometimes the case. But the occasional sardonic pounding just adds to the overall entertaining contrast. Vive Satie!

    It's fucking curious the imense contrast between the deep profoundity, seriousness, of almost all of his work, Satie's, and the deliciously dadaistic humour of his titles! Why, "The Dreamy Fish"... Really... Even in his personal life, you see, in most of his photos, he's a funny face... ("The Dreamy Fish" is one of the few of his with a humouristic atmosphere in the sound, too!)
