The formula is called factorial in mathematics. To get these numbers one has to multiply by next number to the current factorial. In the context of merukhand there is only one combination with one note. If we take 2 then multiply by 2 to previous number of combinations, here 1. So the number of combination with 2 notes is 2. If we take 3 notes then multiply by 3 to the previous number of ways,2, we get 6. So there are 6 ways we can arrange 3 notes. For 4 notes it will be 4 X 6 = 24 ways possible. For 5 notes the number of combinations will be 5 X 24 = 120. For 6 notes it will be 6 X 120 = 720 and for seven 5040. Reason for this formula is as follows. Suppose we want to find combinations of 5 notes. We can choose the first one in 5 ways. Having chosen the first note to be sung we have 4 note left (no repititon) so 4 ways to chose the second note to be sung. For the third note to be sung we are left with 3 notes so here are 3 choices. For fourth note to be sung we are left with only 2 notes of 2 ways and for the fifth note to be sung we have only 1 choice left. The resulting number of combinations is product of number of choices we have for each successive notes . So it is 5x4x3x2x1=120. If we stick to combinations of 4 notes only then we have 24 combination starting with SA and taking up to next 3 notes (upto ma). But we can construct these begining with every note in saptak (assuming sampurn sampurn jati). So we get 24 X 7 = 168. While highlighting the importance of merukhand UST Amir Khan, in an interview in London (Niranjan Sarkar TH-cam upload), has mentioned that although merukhand leads to a large number of combinations only 168 of them are more useful. He didn't explain the number 168 but I think merukhand of four notes starting with each of seven note of octave gives us this number.
Jitne bhi notes hain unka factorial (!) nikalne se no. of possible combinations calculate ho jata hai.. 1 swar - 1 ! => 1*1 =1 combination possible 2 swaras - 2 ! => 2*1 = 2 combinations possible 3 swaras - 3 ! => 3*2*1 = 6 combinations possible 4 swaras - 4! => 4*3*2*1 = 24 combinations possible 5 swaras - 5 ! => 5*4*3*2*1 =120 combinations possible 6 swaras - 6 ! => 6*5*4*3*2*1 = 720 combinations possible and so on.. In an interview, Ustad Amir Khan, who adopted this technique in a much prominent way, said that this sort of practise being used up to 4 notes is more than enough and taking more notes is not that much required because the no of combinations become too much for practical use. Ashwin Ji you are doing a great job here. Keep it continuing. Thanks. :)
Ashwin ji, It was great to know about Merukhand. I was not aware of it. It was written in 13th Century by Sarang Dev. The same calculation was later done in 18th century and came to be known as Factorial. The formula is denoted as !n = nx(n-1)x(n-2)…….x1 (e.g !5 = 5x4x3x2x1). It is very unfortunate that something originated by our ancestors is lesser know to us than the work done by westerners. The talk is fantastic. I do follow your videos. Learning since last two years.
Ashwin sir...Aapke videos dekh dekh kar apna mind khol raha hoon ...Main bata nahi sakta ki aapki baatein kitni samajh aati hain mujh jaise intermediate bansuri player ko jo 25 saal se baja raha hai par apni playing mein ras nahi la saka due to absense of technique practice. Tahe dil se aapka dhanyawad sir... Respect to you. Please aise hi apne videos se hum sabhi sangeet lovers ko nawazte rahiye.
I can play gayaki taans prakar in komal swaras raags like bhairavi bairagi malkauns....but if i try to play same thing on shuddha swaras raag like...bhoop , sarang....its face difficulty in playing...... Because in komal swar raag ...we have support of half swar to move fingers.....but how can i play in shudhha notes with clearity & consistency
Thanks sir ji, mai iskaa abhyaas jaroor karonga, mai 3 seal kaa diploma bhee kiyaa hai lekin isprakar baha nahi samghaya gaya. Koochh puchne par mana kar diyaa jataa thaa. Kabhee kisi ne tecknik nahi bataaya lekin aap logo ke in videoes se bahoot faayada hota hai. Samagh bhee badati hai. Thanks again...
Thanks a lot Ashwin🙏🏼 I had heard and practiced a bit of similar palate but was not aware at Merukhand alankar. Great to know at this, appreciate your efforts and knowledge sharing. &Well said at the social distancing and lockdown.👍🏼 Stay safe and have a great time. Thank you once again.
Appreciated for your precious remark. Have a question: Is it possible to play Glissando (Meend) from the lower octave to the higher octave in flute? I.e. : From lower Shadaz to higher Shadaz? As we have a cut after Madhyam in flute.
Ek question hai sir...Main right handed hoon par basuri mein right hand uppar rakhta hoon...E flute bajate hue left hand ring finger main dard ho jaata hai. Kya koi upaye hai iska?
1 note: 1! = 1 2 notes: 2! = 2*1 = 2 3 notes: 3! = 3*2*1 = 6 4 notes: 4! = 4*3*2*1 = 24 5 notes: 5! = 5*4*3*2*1 = 120 6 notes: 6! = 6*5*4*3*2*1 = 720 7 notes: 7! = 7*6*5*4*3*2*1 = 5040 A complete practice of all of these combinations will make: 1! + 2! + 3! + 4! + 5! + 6! + 7! = 5913 (but this all starts from one note). In one octave, you can play 1 note in 7 straight combinations (7 notes), 2 notes in 7 straight combinations (2*7 = 14), 3 notes in 6 straight combinations (6*6 = 36), 4 notes in 5 straight combinations (5*24 = 120), 5 notes in 4 straight combinations (4*120 = 480), 6 notes in 3 straight combinations (3*720 = 2160), and 7 notes in 1 straight combination (1*5040 = 5040) making a total of 7857 combinations. Further, you can go to combinations of flat notes (komal swaras), and get even more. The total number of combinations for two octaves/saptaks can be tens of thousands, for three octaves, it could very well be millions of combinations (calculations yet to be done). So Merukhand is a great source (almost unlimited source) of practice. (Ustad Aamir khan used to practice all of these combinations in his childhood (he stated this in one of his interviews))

Hello sir, With reference to corona virus. How to clean flute. Can we use sanitizer to clean basuri. Pls let us know as soon as possible. Bcoz of this i cant do my practice.
Yes Mrudula, you can use a few drops of hand sanitizer. Bansuris must be cleaned regularly. My method is to generally tie a cotton ball to the end of a wooden dowel rod, dip it in acetone (nail polish remover), then thoroughly clean the insides, especially close to the embouchure (blow hole). After this use a few drops of hand sanitizer applied to a Q-tip. Do not play it for a few hours.

It is permutation n combination in maths. Thank u sir.
The opening part of the song 'Sa re ga ma' from the movie 'Chupke Chupke' sung by Kishore Kumar is one of the perfect examples of Merukhand Alankar.
