If Angelina didn't have a great voice, she would be the greatest producer of all time. Her musical instincts are simply flawless.

Aside from her amazing voice and technique, it is Angelina's inate musicality and soul that brings this song alive. This would be a good rendition from any jazz singer of any age; for a girl of (about) nine years old to give this performance is astonishing.

Chest voice, mixed voice, head voice, an amazing collection of vibratos, vocal fry, growl, breathy to belting. She has the most diverse toolbox of any vocalist I've ever listened to, and she is the ONLY one that I never get tired of or bored listening to her. There is something about that vibrato that penetrates the soul.

I can totally imagine this being a track from a 1950s musical with all the big stars of the day. She belongs in another era but she is a gift to ours. Great reaction. That voice envelops you "like a warm blanket", as Alan Papier has said, and seems to have healing properties and, well, almost a forgiveness, if that makes sense.

Grandma Mery Zamani directed this video of Angelina walking through the crust of salt on a saltpan in CA. She's amazing. My only question is, who had to wash Angelina's dress that night. Was it Mery, or her mother, Sara Astar? Or did AJ give it to her little sister, Juliette Astar, to do?

Her grandmother directed this. It was meant to convey being on a foreign planet....as if you were on Mars.
Did you notice the heart shape pool she is at? Subtle artist touches throughout the filming. Mery, the grandmother, is a famous artist herself, and her aesthetic is shared with Angelina who also paints when she's not singing.
A real photographic and lyrical treat.

The reason you find her voice so difficult to explain will become clear to you as you watch Angelina sing many different genres at different ages. She may be the best singer you’ve ever heard. Her voice itself is unique, as you noted, and her technical vocal skills are something you’ve never heard before from such a young singer. And every year, she has gotten better. At 17 now, she is not in the same league as any other singer.

  • @geoffreynorth9046

Great reaction: agree with all you say about the unique and iconic qualities of her voice (have you seen the video where she sings some lines from a Whitney Houston song in her crib at the age of 18 months...? I kid you not ). I think she 8 here (9 at most) - the terrain is a bit puzzling... looks like salt flats of some kind ? The singing absolutely beautiful of course... The "quiver" you refer to is I think what is usually called VIBRATO...she is famous for her beautiful vibrato; you have to remember her singing background is strongly jazz-influenced.

This is the link to Angelina starting at age 18 months, singing two phrases to Whitney Houston’s ‘I Will Always Love You’ when most children are uttering their first words (someone heard a quote from her mother that much more was sung as she ran to get her phone to record): m.TH-cam.com/watch?v=VJjG68Dfr-8&t=115 1:53 to 2:10 (this is a very brief 15 second home video in the middle of a longer TV interview)

Just FYI: the earliest evidence we have of this music video (AFAIK) was a picture that was posted to her FB page on 2015-09-23. It shows her in this same location (with the dirt/gravel road below her and the hills visible in the background), wearing the same dress, sitting on the camera dolly that would have been used for the opening closeup of her feet. This, along with other evidence such as the appearance of her teeth, points to her probably being a little over 9½ when the video was shot (and probably only a little younger when the audio was recorded - her voice sounds very much like it did in "I Put a Spell on You", which similar evidence suggests was recorded sometime before 2015-05-09).

You may have noticed at the beginning that the video was directed by the noted Iranian artist Mery Zamani. Of course Angelina just calls her Grandma. 😁 I'll confess that I don't know much about the video other than what I pick up after watching it many, many times. My best guess is that it was shot in Norway and that the location was selected to give it an otherworldly look or feeling because, you know, "Fly Me To The Moon."

She has perfect pitch and perfect control. Everything she decides to do with her vocals looks effortless. Hours and hours of work to get to this point.
Angelina is a jazz singer to her core. Jazz artist improvise on the fly. Angelina is jazz. She is about to change music forever. Her influence will have ripple effects for the next ten years and beyond, my honest opinion. New single about to drop this month then in the fall a complete album. All originals. Working with some of the biggest names in the business. Great reaction ❤❤❤😊
They call areas where they filmed salt flats. Created near volcanic fields. Sometimes the waters boil. Creating white crust with mud under the crust along the edges. I believe this is in California however others have said Utah?

That "quiver" you describe TYlr is called vibrato....and she is a master at it even at this young age, always has been...there is not another singer on this planet that can do what she does with vibrato...just a fact, she has full control of her voice, which most singers would take years and years to accomplish what she can do. Stay well. 🥰🥰🥰🥰 Most vocal coaches just shake their heads, her mastery of vocal techniques as a child just blows their minds, have watched many trying to explain it. One long time vocal coach, Valerie from Vocal Splendor Studios after viewing her cover of "Feeling Good" on the Live stream Gir Tilbake (Norway TV show) simply said 10 year old Angelina is Master Class vocalist and could actually be teaching....10 years old.

She has a great vibrato, which is that wobbly sound she uses a lot at the end of lines. I'm thinking she was 8 here, but maybe 9. In any case, starting here it begins not to matter what age she is. Her performances and recordings are heading straight for the highest standards of professional musicians. Great reaction, Tylr! She sang this song at Quincy Jone's 80th (?) birthday concert at his request, age 12. He did the arrangement for Sinatra's version of the song. The rehearsal with full orchestra (final mix over dubbed) is here: th-cam.com/video/OMkwoqUNNkE/w-d-xo.html

Angelina has performed this song many times. Several of them are on TH-cam. The most popular are her first version when she was 8 years old on the TV show The View. That introduced her to the American audience. This one of course at age 10 is very popular. Personally, my favorite is her performance when she was 12 or 13 at the Quincy Jones 85th birthday concert. It is with full orchestra and really has the Frank Sinatra tempo and instrumentals. Of course Angelina is more mature at this stage. I would react to the other two of these as well. For vocal coaches, there are many that have reacted. A few favorites are vocal splendor, the charismatic voice, And William Hosthutler.
Angelina is releasing a new single the end of this month and it is original! Her full album of originals is being released in the fall accompanied by a World tour. This is an exciting year for Angelina Jordan!
Please take an extra moment at the end of your video when you request viewers like comment and subscribe to your channel, that they do the same for Angelina's channels. You are provided wonderful links in your description and if you direct viewers there they will see your valuable information as well.
Thanks for what you do. Peace.

Hahaha yup. I think of that quiver, or vibrato somewhat, as more of a shake. Like when someone speaks from deep within, it matters to them and you feel it, it's like the earth is moving beneath your feet. Their words come out shakey, but yet you don't feel they are weak or scared. I don't know anything either, but her natural storytelling, her unique vibrato, I wonder if she's singing from a little deeper than most at times, if it means more to her than we are used too, and that's what we're feeling.

A lot of people are saying you were referring to "vibrato", but I think you meant something more specific: the way her voice kind of breaks up a bit at the end of notes. I would say that's vibrato coupled with a slight "disengaging" of the vocal chords and a lessening of the air flow, so it doesn't get too breathy. But I'm not a vocal expert, either. (Although I have seen quite a few of those types do reactions to her. No specific reactions to this particular music video come to mind, but some of my favorite "analysis-heavy", "voice-oriented" AJ reactors include Andreas Grussl, Anna Vaskelainen, The Fairy Voice Mother, The Charismatic Voice, and Wild Music. You might check which of those have reacted to things you've already heard.)
She did the same thing a lot when she was younger (than here), but perhaps not quite as intentionally back then. See especially her a cappella performance of "I'm a Fool to Want You" in the second round of _Norske Talenter_ [Norway's Got Talent] about 1½ years earlier (for which please use this specific video: th-cam.com/video/LXknLZDoRVQ/w-d-xo.html - one of the few uploads that present her _entire_ performance and not an edited version of it). She seems to be sacrificing a certain amount of precision in favor of getting the "feeling" right. (To be specific, the precision I'm talking about in this case is holding every note perfectly to the end. Obviously, I'm not talking about her pitch, which is crazy good.)
A lot of what makes her unique, I think - apart from the timbre of her voice, per se - involves this kind of "trade-off". She seems to care more about the "feeling" of her vocals than almost any other aspect: getting the words right or pronouncing them clearly, not letting her voice break, not going too low and losing "breath support", etc. Evidence of this is how many "live-at-home" covers (as I call them) she has posted that contain such "mistakes". We have _extensive_ evidence that she can perform songs live perfectly, and yet in these cases where she could do as many takes as would be necessary to get it perfect, she has elected to post imperfect performances captured in just one or two takes (according to two different guitarists who accompanied her in such videos, respecitvely before and after she moved to the U.S.). I can imagine when she finished one of those imperfect takes, she thought to herself, "Did that _feel_ right?" And if the asnwer was yes, then that was the final take.
Even today, when she has mastered so many vocal techniques, she seems to intentionally sing in ways that at least risk, if not outright invite, vocal "imperfections" (and this isn't even counting the "imperfections" that are _obviously_ intentional - a trivial example of which is called vocal fry). See any of her recent (last year or so) live performances of "Bohemian Rhapsody" or "I Have Nothing", for example: they are not as "perfect" as previous performances of the same songs. But that seems to be because she's choosing to put more emotion into them, and the way she is doing that results in various kinds of breaks and "unsteadiness" in her voice. When she was younger, it was more obvious when she made a mistake or, say, was "under the weather" (and thus not singing perfectly). Nowadays, I would say that distinguishing between what "vocal effects" (let's say) are intended, which ones are merely "allowed" to happen, and which ones she would see as mistakes, is getting _really_ difficult.
It makes me wonder what her upcoming album is going to be like, vocally speaking (she has hinted at what it will sound like musically). Will we hear the full character of her voice or will they "play it safe" (in their minds) and "smooth out any rough edges", so to speak? (By "they" I am referring to the production team. Hopefully she has a great deal of say in how the final product sounds, but that doesn't mean she will not be influenced by what "the experts" are telling her. Thus, I am worried about what they are thinking.) The "produced" stuff she has released since signing with Republic Records has been a bit of a mixed bag in this regard. The studio version of "7th Heaven", for example, is IMO _hideously_ overproduced. But that seems to have been an "artistic choice", because she considered it a kind of "dance track". The "live in studio" versions of 7H and "Million Miles" (as well as, say, "Easy on Me", etc., on her CoverChannel) are much better, but still have some evidence, as I hear it, of post-production "fiddling" (with some instances more "debatable" than others). Part of me wishes she could release a _live_ album of all-new material as her major-label debut. Wouldn't that be a flex?😋 But seriously… she's done some of her very best work live on TV and live in concert. So I hope her album is as close to truly "live in the studio" as it can possibly be.

A whole lot of the effect is from the natural tambour and resonance of her voice. You hear it in her speaking voice, but she has obviously been doing singing exercises since she was a baby, she has a very large and ressonant larynx, which both gives her a very low floor when singing deeper tones, which gives her incredible low range, and the ability to use breath control seemlessly, even at this age. Usually someone would have to work a decadefor the breath control to do some of the covers Angelina's done. See Whitney Houston cover. She is obviously well trained, but the exciting thing for me anyway, is what happens when they run out of musical techniques to teach her, when she could run the gold through the olympics of vocal gymnastics, before she is 20 years old? She will go out there and invent some new ones. Thats how she will change music. She will help to mold the face of music for at least of a half century if we are lucky, more. I dont ever see that voice going out of style. It hasnt in the last 100 years.
