I can’t honestly say I was at Woodstock but I can honestly say I was at this show. Lived across the river in Peoria at the time. How crazy to see this on TH-cam some 34 years later! As you can see Gary did not disappoint! A local guy who made it big and an absolute monster guitar player. Awesome show and so glad someone recorded it. RIP Gary
This may sound like an over statement but I honestly believe that Gary Richrath belongs in the RHOF!! He was so far beyond his years in technique, licks, style and progressions. After all these years I am still in awe of his incredible talent!! Go on with your bad self Gary. Never Rest In Peace, rock down the house Brother...
@@kmaher4980 Hey Brother, we think exactly the same. Just don't get me started on that horseshit R&RHOF garbage. That's nothing but a political set up and it's not based on true talent by any stretch..LOL
Gary could play like no other. Guitar legend. He does belong in the RRHOF. I was so matched they fired him from the front. There was no forgiveness in my book. My love for reo faded after that. I still listen to Gary Era music.
Got to see Gary's solo project a few years after he left REO. So glad I did. I so enjoyed an intimate show in a small venue. I stood right in front of the stage as he sang Son of a Poor Man. I'll never forget it! He was always one of my favorites! Rock on Gary.
Got to see Gary on that tour, in Green Bay. I remember him peeking out from behind the stage curtain on the side of the stage to size up the crowd. Then he frowned. He broke at least 4 strings that night. Nine Lives is the reason I got an electric guitar.
The first time I saw them was at the Rockford armory about 1972, saw them a number of times after that Badfinger / REO Speedwagon / pure prarie league Feb 10, 1972
True shredder I shot a nice 9 pt buck while listening to him rip through 157 riverside avenue this year and you all were right he was Reo and should be in the rock&roll hall of fame awesome talent
Gary was REO Speedwagon with no Gary there would’ve been no REO plain and simple. I saw these guys live a number of times people reacted to the guitar more than anything. Gary was one of a kind guitarist. Nobody can copy him or mimic his sound. All of the greats are like that when he left the band to me, they were dead. It’s really sad that one of the first members of the band gets thrown out by a guy that joins in later and tries to destroy Gary’s vision of the band and the type of music they should play. Rest in peace Gary you’re sorely missed.
I seen this tour at the Silver Dollar in East Lansing. Derek St Holmes opened for him. I grew up with REO playing in the house. It was a great show. There wasn’t many people in the bar. Had a great table. Gary could see I new the songs and it seemed like he was playing for me…. Good guy!
Martin Barre of Jethro Tull is the most underrated guitarists of all time! Gary richrath is a close second behind him. Martin Barr has much Superior techniques to Gary but Gary can rock! You can already see the effects of alcohol on it you gained a tremendous amount of weight by the time 2013 rolled around he was a mere shell of a man! Being thrown out of Oreo must have really destroyed him and then he turned to alcohol alcohol and drugs he never recovered, very sad thank you Kevin Cronin !
The most overused word on TH-cam is underrated. But Gary is most definitely underrated. A fantastic guitarist who was in one of the biggest bands of his era. And sort of like David Gilmour with pink floyd, every note Gary played added something did the song he was playing on
Gary Richrath was the guy who made REO really rock. I was not surprised he left over creative differences. The earlier REO is the real deal. The later stuff doesn't rock IMO. It's power-pop at best. Kudos to you Gary for knowing when it was time to take another direction.
@@cheezhead6007The earlier Richrath-led REO sounds way better than the obviously looking for commercial airplay later REO. I don't and won't listen to that pseudo-rock. If you think that REO is the only band that I dismissed for doing a 180-degree change of direction, you'd be mistaken. There are more than a couple of other bands that I stopped going to see because of selling out and trying to get AM radio airplay with the music/lyrics getting wimpy. I never saw REO live and I would not go to see them now. They played two miles from me in the recent past and I did not even consider getting a ticket to the show.
@K Maher every body knowed the true of this problem. GARY IS THE BEST OF THE BEST GENIAL WE NEVER KET HIM TO DIETH HIS MUSIC. GARY UNIQUE RIP WE TAKE CARE YOUR MUSIC OLU GARY
No it's not I believe Gary is the #1 most underrated guitar player in the history of at least rock n roll, for one he is overshadowed by reo Speedwagon, most people don't realize who or why or what makes some of there songs rock, but reo if the hall of fame wasn't somebody's pet project would naturally be in . what is considered by many to be the best one take guitar solo on keep on loving you is a absolute masterpiece .Gary is really amazing when you take in that he never used any sound effects besides his fingers and the fret boards and seemed to only have a few guitars.Gary is amazing he really has got to be in at least the top 20 best guitar players of all time and I believe I could have argument that could place him in top 20 ,he is self taught.
A very decent recording. Very bad camera work. Sad to see a great underrated Gary playing what looked to be a club venue. RIP Gary. You were one of the greats. You should be noticed among the pages, Claptons young’s etc.
Not bad in places, but hard to watch Gary like this --- and this version of Golden Country isn't even close enough to be far away from the killer one on REO's 1977 live album. But it does raise the question that I'm sure many of you have asked again and again over the years: How did REO go from playing this kind of all-out, cooking Rock'n'Roll to being what one observer noted as 'the Air Supply of heavy metal?' Thank goodness for their late '70s albums --- That to me was the real REO.
This kind of mediocre guitar is "nothing close" to the beautiful work that Richrath played in his REO days. You can "easily see" what heavy drinking & drugging have done to his fabulous licks back in the day. To see him fat and unrecognizable playing with REO in 2013, was "JUST SAD," I couldn't believe he even showed up, and his playing was dreadful.
Gary will always be my favorite guitarist, he was a true master.

Gary could really tear that guitar up his solo's were blistering hot!
Absolute master on that Les Paul. Top 10 guitarists in my opinion. Very glad someone recorded this!!!!!! There's NO REO without Gary. Period.

If Jethro Tull isn't in then REO shouldn't be in either.

Do you think the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame says what music you should like or not like?
Doesnt matter.
He's in MY hall of fame.
F**k the others.
Gary is one of my GOATs. Hands down, always and forever.

Absolutely LOVE watching Gary perform and miss him so much!!! RIP ❤😢
Gary was my favorite REO member and this was My favorite REO song by far.

Yes he belongs in the RRHOF!! He could make a guitar sound like NO OTHER! Still gives me chills listening to him.
No stupid phones- love it.....

ONE of A KIND! NO REPLACING GARY! RIP GARY!!!M.O'B

My GAAWWD I miss this raw axe playing energy!!
This rendition is awesome!

Kevin Cronin could take his band, but he could never take his smile! One fine guitarist right here!
Sua guitarra me surpreendeu, quando ouví os discos you can tune a fish...and nine lives!God bless him in the name of rock.

Unbelievable! My childhood

Rest easy Gary 💙
All I know is that I miss him.
Rock guitar at its finest, & I love❤ me some wah wah !

NOBODY played a Les Paul better. NOBODY. Not even Les Paul himself. RIP Gary.
This is kind of off the subject but I LOVE his smile! Gary’s smile could light up a room❣️
yes Gary does belong inRHOF RIP BRO
RRHOF should be completely ignored. You don't "rate" or "rank" music, it's too subjective. It's a music museum at best.

Miss him😪 His talent was Perfect for R.E.O. music. And just an Awesome Guitar player.❤🙏🇺🇸

He should have made a go of it with this band. They were tight.

He did not leave over creative differences him and Kevin separated due to drug use and his physical shape
@@cheezhead6007 That is in contradiction to what two people have said. I don't see Richrath putting up with the move from FM to AM radio at all.

I wonder who actually composed the original keyboard opening -
I like KISS but Gary is good. He has rock and roll. Real rock and roll like KISS.
