The Dutch East Indies, also known as the Netherlands East Indies (Dutch: Nederlands(ch)-Indië; Indonesian: Hindia Belanda), was a Dutch colony with territory mostly comprising the modern state of Indonesia, which declared independence on 17 August 1945. Indonesian food is just out of this world!
Small correction on 15 August 1962 New Guinea became independent from the Kingdom of the Netherlands after years of conflict (read war) and transferred to Indonesia. The independence struggle that followed cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Papuans.

Dutch stairs are steep and dangerous 😂😂 I can understand it looks like that for people who are not used to them but we, the Dutch, run up and down on these stairs. What's difficult is moving your stuff via those stairs, mostly big things don't fit through there and that's why people use ropes and wheels to hoist your stuff up on the outside and get it through the windows.
And mostly older houses. Houses built after 1970 have wider stairs which are easier to climb. They're also less steep. The stairs in my flat are just fine (I live on the top 10th floor and the lift goes to the 9th so I have to get up some extra stairs. My bf's house was built in the early sixties and he still has narrow and steep stairs. Horrible! I'm so glad he has bars on both sides. Look into the 'Afsluitdijk' (literally: close-off dike. Even though it's really a dam). It's a 32-kilometer dam closing off the (then) Southern Sea (a shallow inland sea arm of the North Sea) completed in 1932 aimed at preventing flooding and enabling the creation of the largest artificial island in the world, Flevoland. Or the " Delta Works", which are a series of gigantic water defences in the southern province of Zeeland (the Zeeland that makes New Zealand new) that were built between the late 1950's and 1997(!) to again prevent the three river delta there from flooding.
