We recently climbed the Sydney harbour bridge and were asked by our guide where we were from - when we replied "a place in England called Leicester which most people here have never heard of" his immediate response was - "that's well Lesta!". apparently his house mate was from Leicester and had shown him the video. Half way up the bridge he introduced us to his mate, declaring - "there're well Lesta!".- well done for putting the city on the map!!!

My family going back to the early 1800's has live in Leicester. In the 70's I lived on Danvers road with my Grandpa and Grandma, a simple walk to the 'old' stadium to watch a game on Sundays. I know live in the U.S., first generation Yank. Thanks for the vid, brings back sweet memories.

...The whole point of the song is that we should be able to celebrate and laugh at ourselves - warts and all - and that this is a trait almost universally shared by the people of Leicester. I never intended it to become what it has, and if I had been targeting that, then I perhaps would have been a little more cautious in my choices. Its just meant to be a bit of fun. Apologies if it has caused you - or anyone else - offence.

...However I take your point on "chav stare". If I'd written it today I wouldn't have used that phrase. The London riots a couple of years back opened my eyes to some of the realities of inner-city life that had been previously hidden from view. And re-using that derogatory term - even in jest - is probably not very helpful to anyone.
But I'm a big believer in letting the people decide, and the overwhelming majority of folks have enjoyed the video without taking it too seriously...

Hi Serge. Paste Ya is school slang for having a fight/beating someone up. Tax Ya is something that schoolyard bullies used to do to the little kids - a small-scale protection racket: Give the bully a few 'ence - the tax - or else violence would follow. Get taxed or else get pasted, it's your choice... :)

I was born and breed in Highfields and am so pleased that I moved out with my children because it's turn out a shit hole and there are hardly any Leicester people there anymore so many different regions there now keep it !
