Well, the most brutal kill shot in this video was when (at 2:30) Mike said, "Modern weapons, they are all about getting the most bang for your buck in a small package." and then the camera zooms to Mike's groin.
“Are these legal?” “Dude this is the American South, everything is legal.” This is very accurate since like 90% of the weapons in this video are illegal in the country I live😂
The flashlight *IS* a great self defense weapon. Even more disorienting if it has a strobe effect. On a random note, I read once that ninjas allegedly used eggshells or paper balloons filled with pepper or crushed glass. They would supposedly throw them at the ceiling, leaving a cloud of dust. This sounds like it could be pretty effective if you were being chased down a hallway.
Jesse really surprised me,i tought Icy Mike would be better with more real life and fighting experience, but his movements where fast, powerful and without any wasted effort, almost unreal to the sight. I never thought somebody would be able to do things like those in real life. The cut,the nunchuk strike, the bo,the shuto, were almost to fast for the camera, and so clean that were almost sharp.
I agree with the flashlight thought . I've owned a gun for more than 20 years and only felt compelled to pull it twice and both times just the sight of the thing did the job. Meanwhile I probably chased off a dozen suspicious characters and assholes just by shining a flashlight in their direction

This was a fun and interesting video. There was a safety disclaimer at the beginning, but I wished Jesse would have explained that the "sword" he used to cut the tomato wasn't considered a sword. I thought the Japanese used such an item more like a carrying case to house a blade before actually making it into a sword. It's actually quite dangerous to use that item because it has a sharp blade with no hand guard. Some folks from the Sword Forum site used to talk about how dangerous such a "sword" was to the user because some people have nearly lost fingers using it.
Nope, what you are talking about is a Shirasaya mounting. But the sword used in the video was clearly the wallhanger version of a concealed swordcane probably inspired by the Zatoichi movies or such.

Jesse, you are one accurate individual. Your hand-eye coordination is something else. Thanks for such a fun video. The PR-24 baton that police used to use (I guess everyone's gone to Asps, CEWs, or OC spray) surely grew out of the tonfa. Blocks, punches, the spin... lots of uses and good for blocking blades, clubs, and bare arms/hands. The Ninjutsu practitioners I knew of (a friend came half way across Canada to train with them) would tell you that the shuriken was also used as a distraction (like chucking a rock in the bushes/night), a lure (if someone sticks one of them in you, you might go after them with a sword and some friends) or as something you could either throw at a pursuer (aiming for the knee, thigh etc) or the fancy head shot Jesse did (great throw!). They could also be sunk into the ground and the guy coming after steps on it and it takes him out of a pursuit. Most of what Ninja training revolved around misdirection, breaking contact, and disabling pursuit. They have kicks which mix kick and forward roll driven by the kick to gain distance. Mind you, my friend one time made one out of about 5/16" thick iron stock. (a 6 pointed star like the Star of David). It easily outweighed any star I saw made of stainless or of thinner construction. With one of those, you'd have shorter range, but when we tested it at his place by throwing it at an aluminum garage door (throwing overhand with the star vertical) from about 10', it blew *right through* the aluminum door with no real trouble. A heavy star like that could actually do a lot of damage if it caught you in the neck, head or a hand with the power of the impact and the sharp edges on the star being driven by that. Another modern self defense thing is the tactical pen. Some are made of titanium, others high grade aluminum or brass, and they have a tip (could be on the end or at the cap) that is designed to concentrate force on a *small* area and that is designed to take you pounding it into someone's body (held like the flashlight your buddy had). Some of them would literally punch through the bones in the skull and if it hit the softer parts, you could do even worse things. No screwing around - very short range though. I'm a fan of one of the tools used in Aikido training - the shorter staff (Jo). The Jo training is useful because it can handle bare handed, sticks, clubs, blades, etc if you know what you are doing. And a walking stick is only slightly shorter than that so you can carry one of those almost anywhere (just get a hardwood one of solid construction). Walk with it and if you must, defend with it.
Shurikens are fascinating. The star shaped ones were mostly used as a distraction and didn't do much real damage but were commonly used with poison. The most deadly shurikens we're actually the spike shurikens. Takes more skill and aren't nearly as cool looking, but... Turns out if someone throws metal spiked rods into your body, it hurts and does damage. Who knew?
Fantastic video! I loved this collaboration from start to finish. Your martial arts skills were really impressive and definitely showed the benefits of rigorous, consistent training.
@@KARATEbyJesse Know the feeling. Just stumbled upon this video. I love how humble and laid back Icy Mike is. I appreciated his discussion about the levels of street violence and self-defense in general. There are very few martial artists who emphasize the principle of not hurting your opponent too much in a minor brawl or conflict. Kudos, very mindful.
That was great. Any training is better than no training. I have trained in more traditional martial arts and its true that training allows me to use virtually anything as a weapon. I would say study as many martial arts as possible old and new its all good. But nothing beats situational awareness.
I think the eastern weapons win in terms of practical application for more of their weapons but lose in terms of concealability in the modern day, plus laws being pretty random about whether they're outlawed or not. Such a great demonstration, I never really saw an icy mike video before these collabs but it is so cool to see different people come together and just geek out over martial arts
@@saiyanninjawarriorz they were in fact, but they were made with existing Japanese (or other country) law in ind, not f.e. XXI centaury Poland law. Even if they somehow predicted it they would rather stick to own law as f.e. in Okinawa people could carry nunchaku but couldn't carry swords as far as I know. In XXI Poland nunchaku is illegal but Polish law is one of most liberal in terms of blades. In theory you can carry katana for self defense (no one does as cops don't know law too well plus some are assholes). Plus you know, using it in fight would be risky at court

Hi Jesse, I was lucky enough to have lived in Okinawa, Japan for 4 years due to the U.S. Marines in middle school there I was fortunate enough to get to see a comparison between Okinawa weaponry and weaponry from mainland Japan, presented by an Okinawain Samurai in 2015-2016 timeframe. Since then I’ve wanted to see a comparison of U.S. weapons vs Okinawain weapons
I was fortunate to come across a Japanese instructor that was an Uchi Deshi for O'Sensei, and to have had many one on one sessions with him when we moved to a new dojo space These were basically 45-50 minutes of nonstop practice, trying to move an immovable object He was right there with us, picking up materials, orchestrating the mat construction, working along side us, leading by example
I can't believe this vid is 2 years old and I'm only seeing it now. What a great vid guys. So entertaining. Mike and Seth (cameo) are awesome. But you, Jesse, have reached a whole new level in my books. (Not that I'm anybody). Seeing Jesse versus fruits and veg has given me a whole new respect for yours skills. As silly as it might sound this has been a showcase of some of your skills that we never get to see. Icy Mike and Jesse vs fruit and veg. It could be a reboot of "Man vs Food".
Awesome video! I am a big fan of compact flesh light to follow-up with my leather belt if necessary in self defense. I prefer the lightest, cheapest, most easily concealed "tool" to be my defensive weapon of choice: flashlight, boot dagger, pen, waist belt, and ultimately, my voice. However, if my attacker insists on using a firearm. I will gladly accept by neutralizing my enemy with HIS weapon. It's much cheaper to neutralize your enemy with his weapon than owning something like a pistol that is way too expensive and moving parts as a self defense weapon to manage. Lastly, after 30+ years of martial art trainings in hand to hand combat, it is where I feel I am most at home without even having to think. Hand to hand combat has became as natural as walking for me.
Hmmm i have feeling you were not supposed to say "flesh" light first, but i guess you could use that too effectively especially if after the belt opponent goes "harder daddy" in close combat just to finish him off
9:29 that sword actually looks more like a ninja sword because the guard isn't circular, there's no curve on the blade and the tip is like a wedge, they're both pretty damn cool though
Great stuff guys, I've never seen such serious subject matter done so hilariously, but still get it's points across.
Thank you so much 🙏
Great video Jesse, I'm very impressed with your skills not only as a Karateka, but as a TH-camr.
Thanks! It’s lots of hard work… but it’s a labor of love ☺️
@@KARATEbyJesse Know the feeling. I've had to scale down on how much time I put into things over the years (more so promotion than the creative process, but both) to find a work life balance, having become a father and still juggling this alongside my "real" job. But what I do is very rewarding nonetheless, that said I feel that you're the best "TH-camr" out of all the Martial Arts TH-camrs out there.
@@ZenDragonTH-camChannel Thanks for your kind words, I appreciate it! 🙏 Congratulations on fatherhood!! 🌟
Happy New Year to all! Hopefully the making of interesting and informative karate videos will continue for a long time to come.
I’m only getting started 😎
Just stumbled upon this video. I love how humble and laid back Icy Mike is. I appreciated his discussion about the levels of street violence and self-defense in general. There are very few martial artists who emphasize the principle of not hurting your opponent too much in a minor brawl or conflict. Kudos, very mindful.
That was great. Any training is better than no training. I have trained in more traditional martial arts and its true that training allows me to use virtually anything as a weapon. I would say study as many martial arts as possible old and new its all good. But nothing beats situational awareness.
I'm so glad yall all got so many content together!!!
Me too!!
Agreed, it's clear the eastern weapon weren't made with court in mind.
I quit karate as a kid a few years ago, now I wanna try it again as a teen after seeing this channel, tysm jesse!!
God, Mike beating you to the birth place of karate punchline golden. 🤣
This was both FUN AND INFORMATIVE. You can't beat that.
Good job to the defenders and the filmers.
Thanks!
The man was a fully humble gentleman I've ever seen, gave us the whole 8 years experience in a matter of seconds...
"Are these legal?"
"Dude, this is the American South. Everything is legal."
HELL YEAH!
But i think a mini nuke is still forbiden to carry in the Backpack !
@@killerkraut9179 open carry is legal tho
God bless America!
That was a pretty neat weapons test! And what he said about the flashlight was really interesting. And I mean, who's gonna tell you to leave your flashlight behind?
Man...Ya'll snapped! This was like an episode that could've easily have been broadcasted on a basic cable channel like History or Discovery. Very good shit.
I absolutely love Mike's reaction to the ancient law enforcement sai. History is so cool in it's own right. I make comics so I know all about embellishing but the truth is amazing too.
I've just started learning nunchucks, and it was incredible to see you strike the pineapple and still retain control over the weapon. We finally have proof it's a weapon!
More of those collabs, please. Love the vibe and educational values here, Jessie.
Jesse needs his own show on TV! This is some high quality entertainment!
Thank you for bringing us peak Icy Mike!
I was fortunate to come across a Japanese instructor that was an Uchi Deshi for O'Sensei, and to have had many one on one sessions with him when we moved to a new dojo space
These were basically 45-50 minutes of nonstop practice, trying to move an immovable object
He was right there with us, picking up materials, orchestrating the mat construction, working along side us, leading by example
It would be nice to watch a friendly sparring with trainer versions of these weapons!
Now I wanna see a video of Jesse testing how well he can use improvised weapons
21:15 Seth just made a ninja getaway there 🤣
Cool video though ! Interesting to see how traditional (Jesse) did against modern vegetables
I appreciate the simple explanation of when to use a gun. More people need to hear that.
Jesse is the most humble killing machine I've ever seen 😂
Jesse’s training was the most formidable weapon. 🙏🏼
Loved this video!
You guys rock! Great chemistry and great presentation!
That looked like you both had a great time. I liked the honesty from both Icy Mike and Jesse. Well done video guys!
grea video. i liked how you guys basically showed that the weapon origin doesn't matter, you can get the same effect if you know what your doing.
"Any tool is a weapon if you hold it right." - Ani DiFranco
"A weapon is a device for making your enemy change his mind." - Lois McMaster Bujold
Great video, I am looking forward to see your other great videos Jessie Sensei.🙏
Many more to see!
That staff improvisation was impressive
I can't believe this vid is 2 years old and I'm only seeing it now. What a great vid guys. So entertaining. Mike and Seth (cameo) are awesome. But you, Jesse, have reached a whole new level in my books. (Not that I'm anybody). Seeing Jesse versus fruits and veg has given me a whole new respect for yours skills. As silly as it might sound this has been a showcase of some of your skills that we never get to see. Icy Mike and Jesse vs fruit and veg. It could be a reboot of "Man vs Food".
Thank you! 🙏
I love how much fun everyone had and the mutual respect shown here. That's the lesson I'm taking away from this.
As always a fantastic show. Keep em coming!
14:31 That sound was pretty satisfying
Hmmm i have feeling you were not supposed to say "flesh" light first, but i guess you could use that too effectively especially if after the belt opponent goes "harder daddy" in close combat just to finish him off
Golden. Amazing presentation
Thank you! Cheers!
17:48 stick and rock were the first two weapons.
I'm very impressed with Jesse's form and accuracy
Jesse slicing that tomato with the sword was text book movie scene 🤣
So so funny, well done 😆 very interesting and informative. 👏👊 training is so evident loved it 😊
9:29 that sword actually looks more like a ninja sword because the guard isn't circular, there's no curve on the blade and the tip is like a wedge, they're both pretty damn cool though
Extremely entertaining and fun collaborative episode 😂 I watch both Mike's and your content; it's a good match and you have a good dynamic.
Glad you enjoy it!
Brilliant video, Mike's cheeky sniff made me spit out my coffee 😂
This was informative and hilarious. Hope to run into you next time you are in Okinawa. We should do Capoeira and Karate parallels.
Great stuff guys, I've never seen such serious subject matter done so hilariously, but still get it's points across. And it reminded me when I was a young teenager, my friends and I teaching ourselves to use the nonchuks. We wacked ourselves in the head so many times, we were our own worst enemies.
Then we found a guy selling foam rubber nonchuks, just for learning.....man those were like a godsend. Your video was great incidentally.
Much appreciated!
Well done both of you! I love the Shirkin to the face as a distraction
21:15 SETH NOOOOO 😫.
Thank you for sharing ☺️.
