    Another great vid, as always. Andy.
    Quick question - am shortly to be moving my female 7 inch Midas (currently in a Juwel Rio 450 with a sand substrate) to a larger 6x2x2 tank and wondering what size of substrate to go with. Should I stay with sand or go to a slightly larger gravel? I don’t want too big pieces so any advice? What would you do? Thanks, Christian in Essex.

    • @andywoodscichlids2942
      @andywoodscichlids2942  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I much prefer fine gravel to sand. I find it loads better for cleaning with the gravel vac. I find sand ends up in filters and ends up being syphoned out when vacuuming. Fine gravels a lot easier to work with IMO.
      Thanks for watching Christian. Hope the move goes well.

    Awesome video Andy, I love seeing the multi generational thing going forward i.e. Little Wolfie and the Red's are blossoming into something really special, I did wander what the fuss was at first when you got them... not realising they Peel!🙄 Question.. when peeling, does the dark smudging come and go, or was that different individuals, some clear some smudgey?
    And I'm guessing the Missus is gonna get something like a smallish Puffer seeing as you said individual wet pet?!🤔

    • @andywoodscichlids2942
      @andywoodscichlids2942  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on tank size and size of the Dovii. A small fish in a large tank don't need as many water changes as a larger fish in a smaller tank.
      I change a little over 50% ever other week. Ideally I should do it weekly but I've to many aquariums to get round.
      Mr wolfie's 20inch and Mrs wolfie's 14inch and there cramed into a 7ft 250 gallon tank. Ideally they need a much bigger tank.

    My problem with the Red Dovii is that genetic morphs like xanthic or albino for example don't peel. These are natural Amph hybrids undoubtedly.

    • @HPTuchin
      @HPTuchin 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      And before I get jumped on here. I'll mention I've known Mauricio since 2013/14 . Was long involved in trying to get the reds out of country before the Russian twins in FL were successful. He will also never give the true location of collection. He did not collect them. His brother is the only one that truly knows.

    • @andywoodscichlids2942
      @andywoodscichlids2942  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If they were natural hybrids surely a percentage of fry would take on amphilophus appearance. All spawning i have ever seen have all looked 100% parachromis.
      To achieve this it would take many generations of selective breeding.
      I believe red dovii are just like labiatus and citrinellus, when it comes to peeling. All be it a much really accuring in the wild.
      Even growing out amphilophus fry there's always a percentage that fail to peel and turn out drab barred specimens.
      Well that's my opinion anyway.
      Thanks for taking the time to share your opinion. Happy fishkeeping to you sir.

    • @HPTuchin
      @HPTuchin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andywoodscichlids2942 That is not true in the evolution of natural hybrids in the wild what so ever. A few generations in aquaria of an aquarium garnered hybrid... sure.
      Hundreds if not thousands of generations in an isolated local is an all together different thing. Especially if one species grossly outnumbered and/or predate on the other. Several recognized species have now been determined to be localized natural hybrids thru DNA. Much like istlanum is likely a hybrid species formed from the lineage of Beani and Trimaculatus.
      This is where the difference of ichthyology & hobby meet.

    • @andywoodscichlids2942
