Great Video....PHIl does not get enough credit as a bassist....not only creating memorable riffs but always knowing when to add or stay quiet just adding the correct touch...very selfless player who allowed his band mates and the song be the spotlight over himself RIP PHIL
I’m a massive Lizzy fan, I’ve got Phil tattooed on me!!!!! Lizzy are a massive part of me growing up and playing guitar and bass for the last 32 years. Great video! Keep up the good work. Thanks for posting 👍👍👍
When you said Lizzy had a soft rhythm section, the song “Spirit Slips Away” came to mind. Such a beautiful song and Phil’s playing icould be described as elegant.
Great video!=) Thin Lizzy is a great band and Phil Lynott is one of the great rock bass players, I think he almost was like a soul bassist playing rock. Rest in peace
Great analysis about one of the most iconic bass player in the history of rock, Thin Lizzy were a very awesome Band and Phil Lynott was an sublime composer.
@Axlerod Horowitz yep…Phil asked to correct some bass mistakes, as he sings and plays at the same time. Then he said ‘might as well fix the vocals’…and then Robbo and Scott G said ‘Hey, what about us?’ 😜😂
Thanks for this. Phil Lynott was a versatile MUSICIAN, not just a versatile bassist. I would make 2 main points about Phil's bass in Thin Lizzy (and beyond): 1) as you said, he played for the SONG, and not himself. He wasn't trying to show his virtuosity on the instrument. Ironically, however, I believe he DID demonstrate his musical brilliance by taking this approach. As the composer, he wanted to emphasize the song, as opposed to any one instrument. 2) He had to manage both singing and playing bass. As a singing bassist myself, (although not in Phil's league) I know how difficult that can be. Very few people(Paul McCartney?) can be great at both simultaneously. Phil's bass playing was clearly influenced by that. As you mentioned, strumming was a common technique he used. It's incredibly difficult to sing in one rhythm and play bass in a complimentary but different rhythm at the same time. Phil wrote and arranged his songs so that he didn't have to do that.
Great video. Lynott pushed the beat with his bass and dragged it with his vocals. Its hard enough to sing and play bass together, but Philo was able to play one melody and sing another simultaneously
I love rock ever since... But I didn't start playing an instrument, a bass, till I get deep into Thin Lizzy. What a band!!! You're the wild one Phil...
A great video put together really well. Phil will always be one of my favourite bass players. Thin Lizzy is my favourite band I saw live three times. I shed a few tears on the day he died.
Bro, EXCELLENT vid! As a huge Thin Lizzy & Phil Lynott fan, you covered so much of what made he & his music so magical. Cheers, and keep rocking! -Swiney ⚡🐗⚡
I'm a guitar player playing bass and singing in a band right now it's wicked. So much funer than playing guitar. I find your channel to be incredibly informative and analytical to the aspiring musician and bass player trying to find the sounds they want and the influences
Great video Paul. Thanks so much. The intro to "Waiting for an Alibi" at min 4:26 is still one of my favorite bass sounds ever. Funny, the bass sound from Kiss "Sure know something" is pretty simular.
Brilliant, unique style because Phil had to sing AND play bass at the same time, like e.g. Gene Simmons (he is so underrated it's scandalous...), Sting, Roger Waters, Benjamin Orr...and many more.
Amazing video! Thin Lizzy is my favorite band, i have been practicing bass for some months and love your other videos the Nikki SIxx and Lemmy are great videos to! this video has been my best birthday present(yesterday was my birthday) greetings from Tijuana Mexico!
I was a union stage worker back in the 70s and one of the best shows was Thin Lizzy opening for Queen in 78 .Phil and the boys more than held their own with Queen.I made sure to be in front of Phil for their set and he didn't disappoint. With his long legs spread wide and reflecting the stage lights off his chrome pickguard on to girls that caught his eye,he was the epitome of a rock God.
As to what Bass's did he play, I thought for sure the Ibanez Roadstar was going to get a mention. I love this series thank you for posting and of course I subscribed to the channel!
He used the Acoustic 360/361 for quite a few years, as did John Paul Jones and of course, Jaco Pastorius. Also, much like Steve Harris, the growl in his tone was a combination of the P-bass and flatwound strings, which is a little unusual in heavier rock playing, which usually involves roundwound strings, which are brighter sounding.
I’ll post it here then. Your channel is awesome. No bullshit straight to the point telling the truth. Your approach and taste is very close to my understanding of bass playing ( of course you‘re way better though 😅). And thanks for defending the pick!!
Not always up the neck though, one of my fav fav bass lines (and songs) is waiting for an alibi and i just checked another video and he does play it down the neck as I would play it (badly .. :)).
just caught this, well done. Big Phil fan, great deconstruction but what you didn't say about Mr Lynott is the celtic, romantic, feel he put behind it all. I mean, listen to the rocker, dancing in the moonlight or go to emerald, black rose or the drive of the cowboy song, its Phils heart and soul driving the the song through the bass. As for his alernate plucking style, he started on Rythm Guitar. As for the Guitar he used.....gotta be the precision with mirror scratchlate being the origin of the sound, with his soul and pick, along with Mr Brian Downey, driving whatever came after.....He could make a guitarist into something too.......From Bell, through Gorham, Robertson, Moore to snowy white and John Sykes. Even Midge Ure became a rocker at one point.....lol
Bass players that sing tend to play legato or not stop the notes. There are other things. You can see what you are doing while singing if you play in the middle of the next. Also if you stay in one area of the neck then it's more stable. Helps with the singing. So a huge factor is his singing.
Phil Lynott was as cool as cool can be! Good video! ...Unfortunately not as well known as should be the case, but Pete McClanahan (RIP) (most notably of but not limited to Warrior Soul) was an absolute monster on the bass, criminally underrated. Also, how anyone can mention &/or request covering some of the bassists found in the comments before/while neglecting to mention Pete Way (RIP mate) is lunacy (just ask Steve Harris if you doubt what I say). & so no one thinks I have a "dead Pete" fetish I'd also like to mention Sami Yaffa & Ben Shepherd. & although not a rock bassist James Jamerson surely would occupy a spot on the Mt. Rushmore of bassists & should not be overlooked!

Phil is my favorite frontman ever. RIP Legend.
Great Video....PHIl does not get enough credit as a bassist....not only creating memorable riffs but always knowing when to add or stay quiet just adding the correct touch...very selfless player who allowed his band mates and the song be the spotlight over himself
RIP PHIL
Btw...Dr Feelgood is a complete rip from Lizzy Holy War...I have been saying that for years...glad you pick up on it
Agreed!
Phil is the reason I play bass..he was amazing
Phil Lynott was the greatest rock star of all-time! And the most underrated. He’s sadly missed. Thin Lizzy will always be my favorite band.
I’m a massive Lizzy fan, I’ve got Phil tattooed on me!!!!! Lizzy are a massive part of me growing up and playing guitar and bass for the last 32 years. Great video! Keep up the good work. Thanks for posting 👍👍👍
One of the most underrated songwriters ever.

Una leyenda Lyzzy y Lynott
When you said Lizzy had a soft rhythm section, the song “Spirit Slips Away” came to mind. Such a beautiful song and Phil’s playing icould be described as elegant.
Great video!=) Thin Lizzy is a great band and Phil Lynott is one of the great rock bass players, I think he almost was like a soul bassist playing rock. Rest in peace
He was my hero....RIP a legend that went too soon.
Thin lizzy is my favorite rock band and has been since the early 70’s thank you for recognizing Phil
Great analysis about one of the most iconic bass player in the history of rock, Thin Lizzy were a very awesome Band and Phil Lynott was an sublime composer.
I saw TL in 1981 at the Derby Assembly Rooms. It was truly epic
Phil is really underrated Bass player! love the bass on Philomena! amazing song!
Phil is truely missed. Great poet too.❤
Thanks for this video! Phil Lynott is the only reason I have a bass guitar and Thin Lizzy are my favourite band of all time.
Live and Dangerous by Lizzy
Probably one of the greatest live recordings ever
Super video Paul
Keep on
@Axlerod Horowitz yep…Phil asked to correct some bass mistakes, as he sings and plays at the same time. Then he said ‘might as well fix the vocals’…and then Robbo and Scott G said ‘Hey, what about us?’ 😜😂

Thanks for making this. Phil is the reason I started playing bass 🤘
Same here!
Lynott is dead, the King of rock n' roll is dead. But you can always hear the King call ... #kingscall ❤
Beautifully put ! Phil will live on forever in our hearts, ears, and in our bass playing fingers ! 🤘🏼🤘🏼❤️
Great video. Lynott pushed the beat with his bass and dragged it with his vocals. Its hard enough to sing and play bass together, but Philo was able to play one melody and sing another simultaneously
Great point and so true. He played and sang in different signature times.
His vocals were a half beat behind the root note of the bass line.
Phil’s my favorite!! A craftsman throughout!!
I love rock ever since... But I didn't start playing an instrument, a bass, till I get deep into Thin Lizzy. What a band!!! You're the wild one Phil...

Fantastic video Paul. No "other dude" will ever play like Philo
Yeah , but what a thing to aspire too 😁
I never paid any attention to the Bass until I happened upon some Thin Lizzy music last year. (Only 45 years late!) I didn't "get it", but now I do.
@@elzorro7of9 so don’t then ? Like don’t try and be as good ?
Philip found his own way to his own style. He is a Bass Hero.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY PHIL GOD BLESS YOU X
This video is what i needed, i'm learning a lot of this songs in bass (still can't sing at the same time )
Brilliant, unique style because Phil had to sing AND play bass at the same time, like e.g. Gene Simmons (he is so underrated it's scandalous...), Sting, Roger Waters, Benjamin Orr...and many more.
God i love this channel thanks for covering my fav band of all time phill was a very good player and downey is an awesome drummer.
They played great together. A lot of their songs sound like Phil's bass and Brian's bass drum are the same instrument.
Amazing video! Thin Lizzy is my favorite band, i have been practicing bass for some months and love your other videos the Nikki SIxx and Lemmy are great videos to! this video has been my best birthday present(yesterday was my birthday) greetings from Tijuana Mexico!
Phil must have written the songs on acoustic 6 string. I'd have loved to hear him play these early versions 🌵
Have heard it said before Freddy was pacing up and down backstage listening to thin Lizzy stealing their audience
Please keep doing this videos about different bass players! It's fantastic and very informative :) thank you so much for your work!
So underrated ! LLL
Long live Lynott

Genial video! Lizzy es leyenda y Lynott también, mi banda favorita! 🇲🇽
I don't think Phil got enough recognition or credit as a bassist etc in his life time!
Really interesting video - discussed things that hadn't occurred to me.🤘
Great video Paul! Thank you.
Phil rocked
Please do more cover of Thin Lizzy
Saludos desde Argentina!!!
Really liking your vids bass bro!! Keep up the great work. I wish you had been around back when I started playing bass 35 years ago lol.
Thank you for this video
Vagabond of the western world has the coolest bass/guitar parts ever.
Phil used "acoustic" bass amp for a while. He bought one from my Dad in the early 80's.

Fantastico!!
What a legend
A good bit of interesting info on the front man
Acoustic Control Corp bass amps and sometimes Marshall JMP, Super Bass 100 watt heads.
Really enjoyed it and I learned a lot thanks
would been fun to see a more in depth view on how he tuned his base for his vocals
Great job
Not always up the neck though, one of my fav fav bass lines (and songs) is waiting for an alibi and i just checked another video and he does play it down the neck as I would play it (badly .. :)).
Bellissimo video..complimenti!!!

Nice
How about spot lighting the bass playing techniques of Harley Flanagen of the Cro-Mags
have you already done an "how to sound like" video on simmons? you are great
St Phil is the reason why I play bass
