I just played this track having felt half deadened and half dreadfully depressed, having played other favourites which failed to move me which made me feel worse, but then I played this and felt alive again. The love and loss, warmth and sadness, the yearning yet partial reconciliation with that - it takes genius from all concerned to evoke that bittersweet so persistently. However many times I rehear it, this magic never dies. Thank you, Stevie. Thank you Fleetwood Mac.

May be quirky to share this but what the hell. "Sara" comes to me as a craving... about once a week. I've listened to it now for 44 years. I heard it for the first time when I was 11 and living in Tampa, Florida. Back then as a boy I became helplessly and hopelessly addicted to it. Now it's 44 years later and I am 55 years old and when the craving comes... and it will... it never fails ... as it has this night, January 4, 2023... I play it. And will play it at least another four times back to back... until the craving is satisfied once again. This fix lasts me about three days... And I am searching again for Sara. I have never... and will never... tire of listening to this masterpiece of music. And that's just fine by me. 🙂🥰🥰🥰

It does to me as well. It was ‘cool’ in 1980 when I was graduating high school, anticipating the real rest of my life into adulthood. Ten years later I became a father for the first time to a daughter named Sarah. Ironic I heard this song on the radio coming home from the hospital that night!!

This is a very personal song for Stevie Nicks. It is about a combination of things that were going on in her life, including the band, her friend Sara Recor, her relationship with Mick Fleetwood, and her aborted child with Don Henley. She considers “Sara” (1979) to be her alter-ego and her muse - the “poet in her heart.”
“Sara” was the name Nicks gave to her unborn child before she had an abortion. In 1977, she dated Henley; she became pregnant with his baby, and terminated the pregnancy.
Stevie Nicks penned this in 1978 and may have called the lay after her friend, the singer and model Sara Recor. Back then, Stevie was secretly dating Mick Fleetwood, who had recently divorced. A few months later, Fleetwood fell in love with Sara Recor and broke up with Nicks.
“Sara” could also refer to Lindsey Buckingham and his failed romance with Nicks.
“Sara” was originally 16-minutes long, but it had to be edited down to under five minutes. Stevie claimed the “real version” had about nine more verses and told quite a story. ONE LYRICAL TSUNAMI‼️
“Tusk” (1979) was eagerly anticipated, since it followed up “Rumours” (1977), one of the best-selling albums of all time. “Sara” was among the tracks that went over well with most listeners. Much of the double LP could be described as “experimental”, with several compositions by guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, that sounded nothing like the tunes on “Rumours.”
In 1986, Nicks checked into the Betty Ford Clinic to kick her cocaine addiction. She signed in as “Sara.” She authored a piece about the detox experience, titled “Welcome to the Room, Sara.” It appeared on Fleetwood Mac’s 1987 “Tango in the Night.”
Celebrities are in the public eye day in, day out, especially at the height of their fame. Nonetheless, they have a right to keep their HIDDEN GARDEN to themselves, just like anyone else. Whoever she is, “Sara” obviously means a lot to Stevie Nicks. And she might well remain STEVIE’S SECRET forever and a day.💚🎵💜

@Marie Blue - Thank you for the explanation. I never knew what she's been through, but I knew that it was something deeply emotional. I had heard that she had an abortion, but I never knew that it was Don Henley, as I had thought that it was Lindsey Buckingham. I had heard that it was because it would have been career ending for her. I, too, had an abortion early. He told me that he would leave me and that I would never see him again and that I'd never find him. It was not the procedure that broke my heart, it was the rejection of the person I deserved to be loved by with completeness.

I saw a doc about Stevie. They interviewed Don Henley, who Stevie had been seeing shortly before she wrote this. Sarah was the baby she never had, and will probably always mourn for. This song has so many layers, like all her music. She's a goddess. Imperfect, yet somehow flawless.

Sorry but you're way off about the reason for the song and the meaning of the words. It is about Stevie N. and Don H. and the baby she aborted (Sara.) that she and Don H. had conceived together.

    • @ashleyjennings5224
      @ashleyjennings5224 ปีที่แล้ว +6

@@saprmp1977 That is not exactly true. With a lot of Steve Nicks's songs, some are hard to unravel. The song Sara was originally 16 minutes long and was heavily edited so it would fit on the album. In the song, Nicks is talking about a lot of different things and people during that time in her life. Mick Fleetwood, Sara Recor, and Nicks herself, and the affair Fleetwood and Nicks had is the bedrock of the version heard on the album. The name Sara in the song is not referring to just one person named Sara. Both Don Henley and Sara Recor were both building houses when Nicks wrote the song. A lot of the confusion over the song might be cleared up if Nicks would release the words to the entire song.

    Correct Lyrics....
    Wait a minute baby
    Stay with me a while
    Said you'd give me light
But you never told me about the fire
    Drowning
    In the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
    But now it's gone
    It doesn't matter what for
    When you build your house
    Then call me home
    And he was just like
    A great dark wing
Within the wings of a storm
I think I had met my match
    He was singing
    And undoing
    And undoing
    Ooh, the laces
    Undoing the laces
    Said Sara
You're the poet in my heart
    Never change
    Never stop
    But now it's gone
    It doesn't matter what for
But when you build your house
    Oh, then call me home
    Hold on
    The night is coming
And the starling flew for days
I'd stay at home at night
    All the time
    I'd go anywhere
    Anywhere, anywhere
    Ask me and I'm there
    Yeah
    Ask me and I'm there
    'Cause I care
    In the sea of love
Where everyone would love to drown
    But now it's gone
They say it doesn't matter anymore
    If you build your house
    Then please, call me home
    Sara
You're the poet in my heart
Never change, and don't you ever stop
    Now it's gone
    No it doesn't matter anymore
    When you build your house
    I'll come by
    There's a heartbeat
And it never really died (Ah)
    Never really died (Sara, ah)
Would you swallow all your pride?
Would you swallow all your pride?
    All I ever wanted.....

Just feeling melancholy and listening to this breathtaking song. She will always be one of a kind. There aren't artists like her these days. With that said, I'm older and a child of the late 70s, early 80s. I don't care much for music these days or at all really since before 1990. As someone who is very critical of the latest music and "ARTISTS? ", I have to say that I am very pleased and impressed with Taylor swift and the new adult Miley cyrus. They have changed today's landscape of female singer/songwriters and began to bring back lyrical art and individuality.

I lost my best friend of over 25 yrs. Her name was Sarah & after she passed I found out about her having an affair with my boyfriend & I have struggled with what to do with my emotions. This song has helped me heal and forgive her.

That last notation of lyrics… where did that come from?! It’s actually…
“There’s a heartbeat and it never really died. Never really died. Oh would you swallow all your pride? And could you speak a little louder? All I ever wanted was to know you were dreaming.” Check out the “cleaning lady” version… clear as a bell.

I thought it was about two women friends over many years, and now during adulthood, one is coming out gay to the other, but still straight, but flattered, says it's OK. She hopes she, Sara falls in love with the one who's right for her. They will always be friends no matter what.

It was a fetus. NOT a baby. And it was aborted - not killed. Even the bible says nothing about Abortion. And unless you are Stevie Nicks, you don't know the 'Why' she had that abortion. And as you are not God, who are you to judge another person's actions? Oh BTW - it is SARA, not SARAH.

@@PaulJHershey1 correct, it was a fetus, I did not say otherwise, yes, it was a fetus, one of the stages a HUMAN BEING goes through, and what is an abortion? It is the murder of a human being in the making, ok, I am not (nor would I want to be her) and having on my conscience having murdered my own son, correct, I am not God, I am not judging her, I am just saying that she may rest in peace the human being she killed.
