Just a tip for the end of the wing. Get a flex marker like you have on the ends of the plow and mount it at the end of the wing. Then when you are in the seat you can see it out of your passenger window and use it as a guide. Also if you have a spot near the top of front wing post mount a large convex mirror and that will show you the wing from drivers seat. I have run snowplow for over 30 years and have found these things help alot.

Thanks for the ride. I run those plows for yrs and loved it. One night back in the 70's during a heavy snow and bitter cold my INT was chuggin low and slow when it sounded like a rifle went of in the cab . I stepped out to find the plow frame had snapped from the load. 16 on 8 off at best did get old.....but it was a blast

Back in the 70's in New Hampshire I used to ride along on the town plow as wing man.
I was to raise and lower the wing and to count the number of mail boxes we wiped out.
One time we dug our front plow into the mud and got good and stuck.
One time I tagged a tree and broke a wing Mount in the middle of a big storm.
My son runs the town plow in Neebury NH.

If it's cold enough you can try to block the defrosters to the windshield, the snow does not get stuck on cold glass. Wear a coat and keep the cabin cool.

I always tell my guys. When you get stuck. Stop. Get out. Access the situation. Shovel out and spread sand. Wait for back up. It can get worse in a hurry. Typically a gentle chain tug is all it takes to get you going. Nice video. Be safe brother.

I’m retired now-plowed snow for 30 years, and quite frankly I don’t miss the long hours, the shift work and the dealing with residents of the municipality where I worked. You need a mirror on your plow harness post.(about 30 inches above where the wing connects to the post)and a flag on your wing tip.You will see the windrow you are leaving in your wake and how close you are to the edge of the road.
All the best in your snow plowing adventures and I hope your wife and child are well.

Our big plow was a Gallion grader. There was a huge V plow they mounted for the really big storms? Generally when we got over 4' in one storm. That left a narrow path that later had to be winged back.
Most I ever rode wing for was a 4 day event that dropped over 6'.
It's hard to count mail boxes when the snow is that deep.

I use to plow for my town years ago... from 2000-2005... Had a I.H. single axle S-1900 /4900 series these days dump.. with a 12' good roads highway plow..... the my truck had a 210 hp DT-466 and 5 speed/2 speed manual transmission...use to put load of firewood log lengths in the bed for extra weight/ traction and go .... Never got stuck or hit any mailboxes unlike the people nowadays that work for them... mainly because it was my own truck and didn't want any issues with anyone. I sold the single axle back in the summer of 2017 because I got hurt that spring and needed major neck surgery... and didn't think I'd be able to work again. Big mistake.... Never should have sold that truck... only had 85,000 original garage kept miles and was back to work full time the fall of 2018.... Wound up buying a completely refurbished 1985 AM General 5 ton 6x6 military dump truck with only 17,000 original miles.... always wanted a 6x6 dump and it's been a great asset considering the amount of off road work do especially during the winter months... Landclearing and logging.....still wish I had my I.H. though !!! Good luck to you and your wife with the baby and hope you all stay safe and healthy during these crazy times. God Bless buddy !

A Fiat Allis 12' Ft & 10' Wing, They get Snaky when Heavy Pushin & Do lose traction going sideways. & as for Mail Boxes, the snow force Hits the Box not the wing, Seem no matter how careful one works there seems to be at least a couple down. It takes a lot of skill to put several thousand ton of snow where you want it & storage is always a problem, some folks think you are supposed to remove it & take it with you ! It is a rougher job than the average person thinks, But Equipment is getting better every year, GOOD LUCK, STAY SAFE, & LOOK OUT FOR THE CARELESS FOOLS !

Just saw the section on wipers and if you apply Rain-X before you go out for the day that should make your life much simpler plus you dont have to worry about breaking a nail (finger nail guys...not like a hammer and nails). I use it all the time and when it's raining cars and dogs and large mice, a lot of times you barely use the wipers even though the guy in front of you has them on turbo mode! Seriously do try Rain-X though. Tip: apply 2 coats and use 3 towels. Apply with paper, cotton or microfiber TOWEL. After it has a haze to it wipe off with a cotton or microfiber Towel. Then wipe again with another microfiber Towel. Repeat and THEN go inside cab and look for any hazing or " blurry sections". re wipe if needed...Done!(That's why you have so many towels. )
It most likely should last for a few weeks or month depending on how much you use wipers.

Love your video! I work as an equipment operator for a county highway dept. in southwest Indiana. I see that you are in Iroquois County, IL. That is about 3 hours north of me. I drive an International 7300, great truck for the job. I am curious if your county has a road department, or do you get reimbursed for cleaning the roads yourselves? I know the equipment is very expensive. I can certainly relate to the windshield wiper problems and watching out for mailboxes and other drivers, quite a stressor. I have been plowing roads for 15 years now after retiring as a school teacher. I worked at the highway dept. during the summers while teaching. I got to stay on after I retired. Love the job!! In fact I was out plowing this same storm system in February. We only got 4 to 6 inches. You do a great job of videoing and explaining your work. I can tell that you enjoy your job as well. For each joint on your finger you have about an inch and the whole hand is about 6 inches.

On the other truck that shifts early, trying pushing the MODE button on the shifter, Sometime they are programed for economy or performance. Your primary calibration may be economy and shift early.

For the drone and the cold, somehow secure a heating element or heat packet to the battery and the battery will stay warm so it should last a little longer

I take it that Illinois doesn't put up snow fences anymore. I remember in Whiteside County how well they worked.

Big heating element right by the wiper to keep snow from building up. A good idea would be to turn it on...

It’s on, wiper arm will break before the ice has a chance to melt.

@@WesFarms I agree my wrangler has element for wipers and it’s hard for it to keep up melting if you driving in 30 degree weather at 50 effectively making windchill damn near 0 degree

I live in East Texas and we had the worst winter storm here since I moved her almost 30 years ago. Prior to that I lived in California, ohio and Canada. So I know what a bad storm is and for east Texas it was pretty bad but of course nothing compared to ohio and especially Canada. Lived in Ontario right off the great lakes and we had blizzards from off the lakes and it is total snow blindness. We measured snow by feet not inches (this was a time before Canada went metric) so getting 10" over 2 days shut our city down. We dont have snow plows or snow blowers. A few front loaders maybe and shovels after that. Wind chills in single digits and 4 days later we looking at temps around 55-65 degrees.

Oh yeah we got like 9 inches of snow luckily we had a snow blower if we did not then we would have to shovel for hours.

Thank you. Everyone I see always puts the defroster on full blast and runs their wipers. If you get it clear and let the glass get cold it won't even stick. Most of the time lol.

I drive tractor trailer up here in Canada 🇨🇦 on country roads. I have seen snow plough truck in a ditch and had to go around it. There's no tips and rules to stay safe on road on a snowing day other than stay off the road if you're not an essential worker.
