    I was hit by a ricochet that cracked my rib and left a really nasty purple bruise. Based on your test i would say it was probably moving around 300fps. It didnt make it through my sweater but it left a cloth pattern imprinted in my skin in the exact shape of a 9mm that hit sideways. I still have the bullet. Dont shoot at an indoor range that looks like it hasn't been maintained. The bullet baffels at the end of the range had been destroyed but the owner of the range just put up rubber panels to hide it.

  • @ScaredyCatTactical

I also recall an incident where a man was hit in the forehead and the bullet did not penetrate but lodged under the skin over bone. I recall hearing of several more where the bullet traveled around the skull following the bone after an oblique hit in the forehead area. Myth busters did a couple episodes on ballistic, mostly falling rounds and iirc they decided a projectile would have to be going over 200 fps to break skin.

    In Canada, it's not just the FPS of the projectile but also the energy that dictates wether something is a firearm or not. I've always heard that anything 500fps or more is considered lethal, but that probably depends on the overall mass of the projectile. A 12 gauge slug traveling at 500fps is probably lethal at close range. I think there are too many factors to consider. That's just my two cents.

    Plus, those rounds that went in about 2 inches or so, while not reaching the medically prescribed 3 inches for lethal damage, you still have a hole punched into the thoracic cavity that may be possibly filling up with red dyed scooter oil, or sucking in air. So you should still go see the doctor.

    1/ Smaller calibers may be lethal at lower speeds than large calibers, due to less surface area to disperse the force (higher penetration).

    I know it's not your usual foray. But what about the lethality of BB guns and pellet guns that shoot in those higher FPS levels? Example, I have a pellet rifle that shoots 1200 fps, and a CO2 pistol that shoots 400 to 500 fps (depending on how fresh the tanks are and type of BB's being used)? How would these compare to the test you just ran?

    • @vinnyvtec8722
      @vinnyvtec8722 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'd find that interesting too. I'm in the UK where we are only allowed up to 6ftlb energy on air pistols and 12ftlb on air rifles unless you get a firearms license. 12ftlb on an air rifle is about 600fps in .22 (5.5mm) and 800fps in .177 (4.5mm). For the air pistol at 6ftlb it's around 425fps with a .22 and 600fps with a .177. I guess though because they are a lot lighter than an actual bullet they would penetrate but not create anywhere near the same energy and would stop at minimum resistance. I think this would be really interesting to see on a zombie, furby or even better a zombie furby 😂.

    I have an idea for a video. In WW1, both sides would shoot machine guns at each others trenches even when they were far away. It has been written that anyone who went to the trenches in the front lines would hear bullets whizzing past them all the time. It was just part of being there.
    Maybe you could look into that.
    There is one account of a British soldier who was crossing some barbed wire when he felt a prick of pain in his leg. He just figured it was from the barbed wire and thought nothing of it. But later on, it kept hurting so he went to the medical dugout a little bit behind the trench he was in to get it checked out. The medic pulled a bullet out of the wound.

    • @CtrlAltRetreat
      @CtrlAltRetreat ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Mass makes a huge difference and 230 is near double the typical 9mm. Even a rock can be lethal at throwing speeds just on mass

    • @baconatordoom
      @baconatordoom ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @CtrlAltRetreat Interesting. The typical less lethal bean bag round is 1.4oz of shot going around 300fps. Possibly lethal if it hits your head or chest due to blunt force trauma. I'm curious about the minimum requirements of a piercing wound that could be fatal. I guess it comes down to the point/shape of the projectile, speed, weight, and the ability to carry its mass through tissue and bone to create a fatal wound. I'd imagine a 230 grain .45acp ball round and .230 grain pointed FMJ boat tail round moving at the same speed would have different penatration results in a clothed human torso at those speeds.

    I think it would’ve been interesting if he had done this side by side with a 230 grain 45 acp round, to see how grain weight makes a difference with the added momentum at low speed. Kind of reminds me of that old British saying, “A little bit of powder and a lot of lead, shoot them once, and shoot them dead!” Awesome video as always Scott.

    I'm glad you started doing headshots. Being stopped by the skull is about the minimum of what I would consider being 'nonlethal'.
    I think for body shots the most accurate way to measure at what point we get to 'lethal' territory depends on a combination of depth, expansion, and cavitation. You should try this experiment again on a regular block of gel to get an idea on this!

    I love these 🤣 can you do a video where you shoot the real gun and then an Airsoft replica of the gun and compare the similarities and differences between them? That would be so cool!

    Scott has no need of a "No Tresspassing" sign.
    He just needs a kiosk set up out front with his channel on a loop.
    Anyone even SLIGHTLY sane is gonna just NOPE! the hell outta that!

    I research this a few years ago and it seems that a rough minimum for lethality was in the 60-80fpe range (like a .25 acp pocket pistol), of course depending on wound location. Most .177” BB guns can only generate up to about 20fpe, but if they hit someone in the perfect spot they could be lethal. Anything over 100fpe is carrying lethal potential, think 22lr from a pistol.

      I have a .25 break barrel pellet rifle that claims to hit at around 31fpe. With only a 27gn pellet, I can shoot through soup marrow beef bones. The heaviest pellets I have are 43gn, but those just knock over and crack the bones. My co2 Sig Sauer .177 pellet rifle (Sig actually makes them, its freaking awesome, not licensed out to like Daisy or Crosman) however, that thing will obliterate bricks with 6gn alloy pellets. It's incredible the technology that exists nowadays in Air rifles. They've come along way since the Red Ryder!

      What is fpe btw? I only know fps which is "feet per second"

      @@randomuser-mv7bb foot-pounds of energy

    • @astang1072
      @astang1072 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott referring to what “velocity” is a bullet lethal is a bit misguided as it’s the resulting energy from a given projectile’s velocity that makes it “lethal”. 400-500 fps for what I assume was a ~115gr 9mm is around 60 foot pounds energy. But say a 30gr .22 bullet at 500 fps will have WAY less energy than a 500fps 115gr 9mm. Step up to like a 150-200gr projectile and 500fps nets even more energy. In terms of projectile ballistics: doubling the mass (grains) doubles the energy; doubling the velocity quadruples the energy.

      My .22 PCP shooting 27 grn slugs will knock a deer over at about 60 fpe. I now have a .30 cal that'll run 130 fpe, so I have no doubt it's lethal as well
