  • In my rendition of "Helvegen," originally by Wardruna, I seek to channel the profound spiritual connection to Odin. The song, a hauntingly beautiful tribute to the journey of life and death, serves as a powerful conduit to explore the ancient Norse traditions. This song is not just a performance; it is a spiritual journey and a testament to the enduring legacy of Norse mythology.

    Helvegen || Lyrics
    Kven skal synge meg?
    I daudsvevna slynge meg
    Når eg helvegen går
    Og dei spora eg trår
    Er kalde, så kalde
    Eg songane søkte
    Eg songane sende
    Då den djupaste brunni
    Gav meg dråpar så ramme
    Av Valfaders pant
    Alt veit eg Odin
    Kvar du auge ditt løynde
    Kven skal synge meg?
    I daudsvevna slynge meg
    Når eg på helvegen går
    Og dei spora eg trår
    Er kalde, så kalde
    Årle ell i dagars hell
    Deyr sjalfr it sama
    En orðstírr
    Deyr aldregi
    Hveim er sér góðan getr
    Deyr fé
    Deyja frændr
    Deyr sjalfr it sama
    Ek veit einn
    At aldrei deyr
    Dómr um dauðan hvern

    Helvegen Translation to English:
    Who will sing me
    Into the death-sleep sling me
When I walk on the path of death
And the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
    I sought the songs
    I sent the songs
    When the deepest well
Gave me the drops so touched
    Of Death-father’s wager
    I know it all, Odin
    Where you hid your eye
    Who will sing me
    Into the death-sleep sling me
When I walk on the path of death
And the tracks I tread are cold, so cold
    Early in the days end
Still the raven knows if I fall
When you stand by the Gate of Death
And you have to tear free
    I shall follow you
Across the Resounding Bridge with my song
You will be free from the bonds that bind you!
You are free from the bonds that bound that you!
    Cattle die, kinsmen die
    You yourself will also die
But the word about you will never die
If you win a good reputation
    Cattle die, kinsmen die
    You yourself will also die
I know one that never dies
The reputation of those who died

I hadn't noticed this performance vid before I left my comment on the other Helvegen vid. Wow, this was even better than that, as I was able to SEE the emotion that you poured into it. Very beautifully done. On a side note, you are quite strikingly beautiful as well... Would love to hear you try to cover something from Danheim, Heldom or Forndom as well. Thanks again for sharing.

Hello @williamhowells7651 ☘️✨ thank you for your kind words, I'm flattered! Really! I'm so happy you enjoyed the performances! Helvegen was a difficult one to sing! 🤍✨ I was thinking about Dangeim another day, maybe I'll give it a try 👀

After stumbling upon your first song I see you have also covered this, one of my favourite songs in existence! 😍I can't believe how uncannily similar this is to Kalandra's version in a few parts. I know it so well that I can hear almost the exact pitch of that version in my mind's eye. I struggled to tell the difference in a few parts, and that is definitely a compliment! It was of course your own spin and I love it, truly. Captivating, raw, and real. How I'd love to see what you could do with this in a studio recording!
When you say it holds a special place in your heart, that truth is undeniably evident to me, especially as one that shares that ambivalence filled sentiment towards this song. It is such a multi-faceted song that brings you through the highs and lows of your journey, the questions it faces you with about the paths and choices you have taken, the beauty and darkness, and the beauty within darkness. It always makes me ponder, was I enough? How could I have done better? How can I reconcile with faded dreams and memories? That we may ask such questions is a reminder that we can still make those reflections a part of who we become with whatever precious time that remains to us, applied in balance with the totality of all that we are. I digress.
Thank you so much for sharing your passionate expression of your own journey, whatever it means to you personally. Your ability is as beautiful as your intent.

Thank you so much for your incredibly thoughtful and heartfelt comment! 🌟 Your words resonate deeply with me, especially knowing how much this song means to you, because it means a lot to me - when I sing this song I feel like the Nordic Gods are talking to me in their own way.
It’s an honor to know that my rendition evoked such strong emotions and brought you closer to the essence of Kalandra's version, which is absurdly beautiful.
Knowing that my passion and personal connection to the song came through means the world to me. I can only hope to continue bringing such authenticity and emotion, because this is who I really am.
I was really moved by your comments. 💜
I'd like to record in a professional studio, who knows! Maybe in a couple of months.
Thank you once again for your support and for sharing your own reflections on this journey. Your words are truly inspiring and remind me of the profound impact music can have on our lives.

@@morrioghan You are unequivocally welcome! Such words were indeed shared with reverence and admiration, a small thank you for creating this, and me knowing you are worthy of the time, thought, and sincerity in conveying them to you! I'm humbled and warmed that they mean something to you for I rarely share them, but I know resonance when I see it and feel it. Not just the song itself but how you convey it. The tone, the nuanced expressions, it's easy to see it's who you are, even without you telling me. 😊
I think you don't need hope to be so enchantingly you when it is inherent to you. I sure believe in you, for whatever little that's worth from a stranger haha. It's the little things that matter, and they say so much. I don't know you, but I definitely see you, and wish I did know the emotive and soulful being you are. I admire the courage to be so authentically expressive and vulnerable. The warmth and humility you exude in your words makes your performance that much more engaging and believable. Thank you for your receptiveness and appreciation, my reciprocation is absolute. Your singing and immersion was gift enough already, but it's an honour to help inspire you in some small way for even a passing moment in this life. I can only imagine how proud and fulfilled your loved ones must be in being valued by you. I sure would be.
I hope you are able to get into a studio, though you are already more than enough without it. It can't create the expression within you, just polish the aural mixing aspect really. I can listen to your version of this over and over just like Kalandra or Wardruna. As for the Nordic gods talking to you, perhaps they are in a very visceral but unexpected way. Are you familiar with genetic memory? I think much of what we feel relating to cultures and places is encoded in our DNA from ancestors stretching back through time. Many of us feel this Norse type of music and its concepts as if it's in our very blood, and maybe it literally is. My grandparents are east Slavic, but before that I am not sure, and one ay it clicked, that I would not be shocked to discover that their ancestors were among the Scandinavians that settled in the formative Rus empire. I've come to feel that so strongly that I'd be shocked if it were not the case, but without genetic testing I'll never know for sure. I think it's a fascinating concept, and emerging science may be onto something profound in the understanding of who and what we are.
Maybe we were friends in another life; maybe the next one; maybe wishful thinking. 😂😝Who knows the cogs that turn in other realms beyond our corporeal senses! Anyhow, I'm not really fishing for another reply, I've taken enough of your time so it's ok if not. Sorry for this novel too! 🤣I believe we should say what we mean to those we feel compelled to say it to, whilst we still have the chance. Memento mori is a slogan close to my heart also, in the same spirit as this song. We are ghosts before long in this world, and whatever fallibilities you may possess like the rest of us, I'm so touched by your beauty. I wish you the deepest joy and fulfilment in this life, and hopefully that involves more music for us to be enchanted by. Thank you. 🙂

@KenshinPhoenix That's so kind of you! Many thanks for the compliments! Yes, the little things matters a lot! I'm very happy to know that my voice and the music reached you in some way, that's my goal, bring some meaning to people's lives. You inspire me! Yes, I'm familiar with genetic memory, and I'm crazy about to do some test, there's a site named "My Heritage", you can buy a genetic test and send to them your DNA... ahah, it works, two friends of mine did, I want to do too. Hehe. I will be amazed if I find out that I have Nordic ancestors, as my entire family is Italian. Thanks again for your kind words! 🥰

@@morrioghan So it is then, an exchange of kindness and happiness! 😊Although, I think I got a far more ethereal deal in your cover of this song. 😛All I have to offer is words, and although words are powerful, they can fail to touch the most sublime things in life, try as I may. I certainly can't sing! 🤣As you know, music is one of those sublime things. Words alone do not invoke the depth of feeling that song does. I am however elated that you find inspiration in my words. It is such an honour to me and makes me deeply content to have returned to you some of the beauty you have shared in both your singing here and your words. Thank you. You give without even trying; the little things matter. 😉 They speak volumes to others that care to pay attention. It is like the silence between the notes revealing the beat, like the true intent that can sit hidden between words spoken. Intangible but ultimately the most real. I hope that makes sense 😜 haha.
We have a similar testing service in my country, and as curious as I am, I won't use it because the world has many unfortunate agendas and shortcomings of human decency. I'll just say that it has been misused. If you do it I'd be interested too in finding out if you have some Nordic DNA, because I'm almost certain genetic memory is influencing who we are, in the shadows of our consciousness silently pulling at our strings of destiny. Ah, you're Italian, now it all makes sense 😊haha. I saw "Portugal" in this video description so I figured you were Portuguese!
Anyhow, Wardruna is playing in my country and city early next year, so I hope I'll be there to see them live. Einar is phenomenal! They haven't been here before so it's a big deal for me! I so hope they will perform Helvegen, but I'm doubtful. It will be amazing regardless.
Well, I genuinely appreciate your time, our most precious resource, so thank you once more for that gift. 😊I hope you're doing great, life is certainly a rollercoaster! You expressed yourself so sincerely in your singing that it's easy to be open with you and just keep talking haha. My bad! Well I half blame you. 😅 I shouldn't overstay my welcome though, as easy as that would be. Maybe too late already, lol. Keep being the warm and enchanting spirit that you are, and if nothing else sing for the beauty it infuses in you. We always know what's right in our heart when we listen, that feeling of contentment. It's truly something to be cherished, as all is ephemeral. 🙂

I totally agree with you! That's so true! "Words alone do not invoke the depth of feeling that song does." I always felt this, because I'm not good at expressing myself, so that's when the music comes.
You're a good writer! You write amazing things in a special way, You can convey your thoughts very clearly... I don't have that ability. And I think this is amazing!!
Yes! everything you wrote made sense! It's beautiful and so lovely! 💜
Ohh no! I'm living in Portugal now, but I was born in Brazil actually, but my whole family is Italian, they immigrated after the war and now they're coming back to Europe again, to different places, hehehe... Unfortunately in Brazil things are complicated.
ohhhh, You'll have the chance to see Wardruna live!!! I'm crazy to see them!!!!!!! Didn't have the chance yet, but I will 🙏🏻
Thanks again for your support and kind words! You don't have idea how good is to read your words! 🤍🤍🤍
