I have volunteered for youth organisations in the past and am a teacher. Teachers have a very little contact with the students. Any contact we do have is limited to the lesson we see them, there are limited things we can say to them. I feel as a volunteer we have more of an impact than teachers do as we can things a proper alternate, islamic view. we can make them understand the hikmah behind the rules of islam and perhaps even allow them to be proud of being muslim. But again, this contact is limited, perhaps a weekend, perhaps a few ours in a week. The only time I have actually seen real progress is when I invested real time in youth, meaning years. I met their parents, went to their house, allowed them to roll with us to the masjid, to talks, bants etc. this gave them a sense o belonging and purpose, this is how you change kids for the better. Kids need time, effort not short reminders or eman boosters. There needs to by a more systematic approach to tarbiyah, with people who are actually willing to sacrifice a little bit for the sake of the youth.

I had a troubled upbringing too, I kept myself to myself. Was labelled a anti-social but this paid dividends, instead of hanging around with the "cool people and wannabe gangsters" I stayed home and played video games. I have volunteered for youth organisations in the past and am a teacher. Teachers have a very little contact with the students. Any contact we do have is limited to the lesson we see them, there are limited things we can say to them. I feel as a volunteer we have more of an impact than teachers do as we can things a proper alternate, islamic view. we can make them understand the hikmah behind the rules of islam and perhaps even allow them to be proud of being muslim. But again, this contact is limited, perhaps a weekend, perhaps a few ours in a week. The only time I have actually seen real progress is when I invested real time in youth, meaning years. I met their parents, went to their house, allowed them to roll with us to the masjid, to talks, bants etc. this gave them a sense o belonging and purpose, this is how you change kids for the better. Kids need time, effort not short reminders or eman boosters. There needs to by a more systematic approach to tarbiyah, with people who are actually willing to sacrifice a little bit for the sake of the youth.
